On this Matteo Mancuso interview: Why he isn’t a “social media sensation” and his #1 goal that REALLY drives him… Backstory to some of the best tracks off his new album, The Journey… Lessons learned from recording his first LP, why Playing Live is “More about feeling than execution,” and the interesting way he came to this conclusion, a low point in his life and his guitar playing - and why this happened… The most difficult part of his technique, that he’s worked on improving the most… the ONE THING that’s happened to him that’s allowed him to become the person he is today, his capacity to stay calm in all sorts of situations… his tremendous sense of gratitude and not taking anything for granted, and who told him why “He’ll do best in life if he’s doing the thing he likes the most.” GREAT conversation, with a super cool and incredibly professional young man - we’ll be hearing a LOT more from Matteo over the next several years!
Only 26 years old, Matteo is an incredibly proficient guitarist who grew up in Palermo, which is the capital of the Island of Sicily, which is of course, part of Italy. His father was a successful session player as well as a big influence on Matteo. Matteo’s playing is pretty amazing, and his playing technique is incredibly unique, and we’ll talk about these things today. Matteo graduated from the Palermo Conservatory of Music with honors, in jazz guitar, and has played loads of jazz festivals including the Umbria, Bremen International, Eddie Lang, Lugano, Uppsala, New Ross Guitar, and Spoleto Jazz Festivals - and this is all only in the last couple of years. He just released a new LP called The Journey, and it’s fantastic.

Matteo is really really special. Not only he destroyed absolutely every idea we had about playing guitar but he is the sweetest, most humble kid you can come across. Obviously he needs to refine his writing skills in terms of composition etc but I've seen all sorts of players for decades and I never ever saw a player like this. Really mesmerising. Jaw dropping. A game changer for sure. I only can think of Django Reinhardt getting this far. Congratulations Matteo, you deserve all the success that you are going to achieve for sure.

I was blown away by Matteo`s suond cuase I find a lot the Scott Henderson vibes in it . Tribal Tech is really my Jam and Reality Check is my number one album. It blew my mind finding out Matteo was pointing Face first as his number one album. No wonder he grew to be a jazz cat just as a rocker guy.

First interview I've heard with Matteo that delves beyond music and the final part of the interview is fascinating for that reason. It really 'fills out' the personality of this great musician. Staying calm and chill in the eye of the hurricane he must be in is truly a great asset. It shows in how effortlessly he performs.

Jeff Beck is my GOATGuitarist. Saw him 15 times. His death hit me as hard as my parent's deaths. I have been pretty depressed. Just disovered for myself Matteo Mancso a couple of weeks ago. His playing is a great anti-depressant. His playing has been great for me. I know Jeff Beck would have appreciated him. Thanks 👍✌️🙂

Mancuso's right hand technique is no mystery to those who have had classical guitar lessons. What is completely original -- besides his outrageous talent -- is that he brought the classical right hand deep into jazz fusion, which is influenced by blues and rock. Another unique element is his exclusive use of Yamaha products like his Revstar guitar and Helix modeller over Gibson and other "brand" names. A player of the caliber of Matteo Mancuso can choose his sponsors; he chose Yamaha and has stuck with them for good reasons, primarily quality, and no doubt they helped him out at the beginning and garnered his loyalty. Gibson has lost a lot of loyalty with corporate mismanagement and uneven quality control even with their high prices. Mancuso's brand preference is indicative of the stable QC coming out of the guitar custom shops of Japan (I include top line Ibanez products here too), which have been underrated since forever and subjected to unfortunate damnation by faint praise and light condescension by a few unremarkable RU-vid commentators and Gibson / Fender snobs who should at least pick up a Revstar and play it one day or do more research. Yamaha's marketing is different. It puts their top line products into the hands of rare talent like Mancuso and lets their playing and magnificent instrument response do the marketing. Anyone can market and "brand" products with PR flackery; not everyone can survive having their products put through the rigorous testing under all conditions by top players like Mancuso and still be available at comparatively affordable prices.

A lot of those older videos he mostly played a Gibson SG, but I see what you’re saying.
@frankierodriguez8661
@frankierodriguez8661 6 месяцев назад
Yamaha has had always excellent guitars. The SG 2000´3000 models from back late 70's early 80's, were far better than the Les Paul model at the time. Carlos Santana left Gibson to use those then, and these days you have the Pacifica models and the Revstar which are excellent quality for the money. However, I don´t agree with Ibanez though. If you get an RG model (I had 2 of them) is a very cheap incarnation of the JEM or Prestige models. With the RG you have completely shit hardware, terrible bridges, particularly the Floyd Rose Style ones, completely unstable tuning pegs, etc despite the necks are fabulous and comfortable. So yes Yamaha but if you want a good Ibanez you have go to get the John Scofield, George Benson, Steve VAi models. The cheap ones are just that. cheap and with a terrible QC.

Instead it's a mystery! In fact, Matteo does not limit himself to using the classical technique but merges various types of techniques that cannot be catalogued. Otherwise anyone could play like him! And in this we find his genius, his innovation, his mastery. No one, until now, has used these techniques merged together, so instead of constantly talking nonsense, try to study him and understand that we are faced with an innovator and a genius of the electric and acoustic guitar.

Totally agree. I said on another video the economy of motion of the right hand is next level compared to using a pick. There's a lesson to be had right there. I can see this approach catching on hugely. Luv and Peace.

the queston I would like to ask to Matteo. Jimi hindrix wanted to give up guitars several times. Did Matteo arrive a moment when he wanted to give up? or just a natural born player that is so easy for him.

I believe a top-notch player who wants to leave a legacy should also consider recording as many albums as possible as long as they satisfy high quality criteria. He should also strive to write as much original material as possible. An example of a talented guitarist who has struck a healthy balance between his social media and concert participation is the German player Bernth.
