During renovation, that gap was left open for the Disney Skyway. They decided to close the gap just so it can look good. Or at least thats what I think

Lindsay Jones I know this is an older comment, but I'll give the right response. The mountain used to be hollow, and those caves were open after the lift. In 1978, the Matterhorn underwent an extensive refurb that included two car trains and retheming the interior of the mountain to a series of ice caverns. During that time, many of the holes in the mountain were sealed, including the ones at the top of the lift. The Skyway continued to go through the mountain until its closure in 1994. The holes were slightly filled to disguise them, but are still present.

There are very brief drops in both sides of the track. It is known that the Fantasyland track has smaller drops, smoother turns, and more views of the park. In contrast, the Tomorrowland track is more thrilling. It has sharper curves, bigger dips, and carries the gained speed further. If you've never been on it, ride the Fantasyland side. If you wish for the maximum thrill the ride offers, ride Tomorrowland. Know that the Tomorrowland side often has longer wait times due to its higher level of thrill.
