KingDoms Kingdom he is indeed leaving. He says it's because he's fed up going to bed at 7 in the evening and with getting up in the middle of the night after 18 years. The newspapers however say it because itn have taken over production and the last straw was a few weeks ago when they ordered him to apologise to a transgender panellist when Anne Hegarty pointed out they used to be a boy.

Wright is right that parliament is sovereighn (and is therefore technically not bound by) the advisory referendum. But ultimately it is the people that are sovereign over parliament. Parliament rules by the consent of the people (and the crown), so Wright should be very very careful when he encourages parliament to ignore the voice of the people - that undermines the legitimacy of the state itself, which ultimately could end in civil war.

Richard McEllan Wow...where do i start with that utter drivel? 1. The majority of Brits did not vote for brexit. ...about 36% did. Which means that 64% did not. 2. Most of those who voted "brexit"...did so in a deeply uneducated manner. They did not have a clue what it meant...and nearly all still do not know. Some Sun or daily mail racist shit mostly. 3. All brits..including the uneducated peasants who voted with their ignorant little brainwashed minds...have lost. 20% of every brit's wealth was wiped out overnight....and it will only get worse. This was of course a massive rape of the british peasants by their banker owners. How to fuck a brit with their consent....hahah 4. If they were not already... the peasants brits are now the laughing stock of the world. 5. Enjoy.... we are all laughing our fucking heads off.

Matthew Wright is absolutely correct on the difference between the AV and EU votes. The AV law specifically stated that a referendum needed to approve the change, whilst the EU vote was a glorified opinion poll. As for elections, they are binding as there is no other way to elect MPs and Parliament can only exist if MPs have been elected.
@herewardthewake5502
@herewardthewake5502 6 лет назад
Idiot, the referendum was sanctioned by both houses of parliament, Gina Millers court case got parliament to have a vote after the result of the referendum, both houses then voted to trigger article 50....................It's now LEGALLY BINDING you fool.
@petercharles8799
@petercharles8799 6 лет назад
I will take the complement Hereward. If you actually read the Acts you will notice the EU Referendum Act 2015 does not oblige the government to do anything, whilst the Parliamentary Voting and Constituencies Act 2011 actually states in section 8 that a Minister must bring in AV if the yes side wins. In most common law countries a referendum actually means a constitutional change will come into law, whilst what we had in 2016 was a plebiscite (glorified opinion poll). If 2016 had been a proper referendum then the government would have got some serious legal advice before the referendum and been prepared to trigger art. 50 within a few days.

Sure, I will just forget the content of laws passed by Parliament and any knowledge of the UK constitution. The point I am responding to is whether the government is under any legal obligation to enforce the result. The fact that the government went ahead with triggering art. 50 is irrelevant as the decision to leave did not require a national poll. My argument is not whether leaving the EU is right or not, just the legal technicality of what constitutes a 'referendum'.

The referendum was issued by Parliament and agreed by Parliament that they would act on the wishes of the people. I don’t know how much more binding you can get with that. It was never intended to be advisory if Parliament agreed to act on the wishes of the people and as we know Parliament is the highest court in the land! Certainly when the referendum was agreed through Parliament no-one said it was advisory and the voting slips didn’t note it either, so where does this advisory bullshit come into it?

If, as a population, we can't get our heads round the idea that it is possible to have different types of something, it doesn't matter if we're in or out-we're screwed. Brexiters seem to think it's all or nothing. The reality is that the advisory aspect of the referendum was acted on in triggering article 50. But just like the first referendum in the 1970's, the 2016 referendum is not eternally binding. The latest poll shows remain has gone down to 47% from 48% whereas leave has gone from 52% to 40%, the biggest lead for remain since the actual referendum. Just wait til everyone has to get a visa just to go to Europe! And Northern Ireland looks healthy... The lies are becoming increasingly clear....
@AngelTiel
@AngelTiel 6 лет назад
EU MEP Herr Lipp Not really. If we do leave it'll be so catastrophic we'll go back in straight away. Everything that has ensued post-referendum only proves remainers right. In 20 years, most of the generation which voted for this idiocy will be gone anyway, the next political generation will take us straight back in. Probably even sooner than that. Brexit is a pyrrhic victory... Gloating over a single victory doesn't mean life long fealty to an idea! Are you a Blackburn fan?-they won the title in 1995.... I'd like us to do well outside Europe if we do leave but it just isn't in our best interests in the long-term or short-term. We're only weakening ourselves....inside the EU we were the 4th biggest economy in the world! Time will tell😁

I like Matthew Wright a Croydon boy who supports Palace but here I beleive he is wrong. His argument here is totally irrelevant as Parliament morally had little option to accept the result of the referendum ( advisory or not). Thanks to Gina Miller's involvement where she took the Government to the Supreme Court on the basis they alone did not have the legal right to invoke article 50 and that Parliament itself had to decide on this resulted in the Supreme Court ruling accordingly. The Government therefore brought forward a Bill where the House of Commons accepted the decision of the UK electorate and voted overwhelmingly to invoke Article 50 and in so doing started the process of the UK leaving the EU. The problem now is how one defines leaving the EU, I have my own opinions on this and they do not coincide with Phillip Hammonds and many of the Remainiacs.

"Advisory".... who was is advising exactly? I'd like to have asked him that. Was it advising the government? No, the government didn't need advice on it as we all know. So who was it advising? The cat in Downing Street?!

That Kevin guy is wrong, he doesn’t even know what he meant by advisory ref. Typical Brexit mentality

Yes because wrapping up the necessary legislation to both hold a referendum on the voting system, and on the changing of said system if the Referendum had have passed, in to one Act was straightforward to do. If they'd have tried to do the same with the EU Referendum, an entire mock negotiation would have been necessary before the vote even took place. It would have been a nightmare. That's why they split the two elements in that case. There was never any suggestion that the Referendum wasn't to be understood as setting the future direction of our relationship with the EU, in concrete fashion, prior to the vote. Indeed, Cameron promised to trigger Article 50 the day of the vote if 'Leave' gained a majority...

Matthew is right here, the referendum was not binding, you could argue that you lose swathes of the population for not enacting the result but the result was so close you could say the same for the other side

The one thing leavers can't seem to answer for me regarding a second referendum is quite simple.. If the reason you voted leave isn't signed off on the final deal are you still OK with leaving..? For instance. If free movement of people was your beef with the EU and at the end of all the negotiations we STILL have to accept that are you OK with leaving?

The second vote is not a rehash of the referendum, but a vote on the final terms of the deal. If that is not democratic, I don't know what is?

Brexiteers tell it like it is. So here goes... "Brexit is stupid idea voted for by stupid people and when it doesn't work they blame the other side".

If it was "advisory" then why did David Cameron say he would enact the result? That doesn't sound advisory to me. This is just sour grapes from another salty remoaner.

Saying it was non binding is just pulling up a technicality. If the Queen had refused to accept the last government (which she has the power to do) in the general election last year, should we all have just accepted it because technically she can do that? No, of course we wouldn't have, and neither should we accept such a pathetic argument from Matthew, especially as we were told ad nauseam that whatever we chose our decision would be respected.
