I've got to ask: has Centrowitz ever won a 1500m that wasn't a tactical sit-and-kick affair? Anytime I've seen him win the finish times are quite slow.

Even with 3:30 PR, he still chooses to run this way, What a pussy!
@johnwilson5743
@johnwilson5743 4 года назад
He runs to his strengths. That's to sit and have a fast last lap. That's what makes him a winner and not a regular loser. Someone like Pre, who I admired tremendously as a tough fighter, NEVER won anything important. His times weren't fast enough and he wasn't a fast finisher either. So who goes down in history as a successful athlete? The one who wins Gold in a slow race or a battler to was never in the top three in big races?
@MrHaram-dc3et

John Wilson Funny because everyone remembers pre. Also irrelevant because pre died before his career could even come to fruition. Not saying either is wrong, Pre is just an awful example to use.
@johnwilson5743
@johnwilson5743 4 года назад
@@MrHaram-dc3et Hi. As I said, I admired Pre as a "Runners runner". A gutsy fighter. It comes down to how "Success" is measured. The great runner Ron Clarke from Australia set something like 17 (??) World Records on the track yet NEVER won Olympic Gold. He at least had the world records. Pre had neither fast times nor Olympic medals of any colour, much less Gold. Does that make him a failure. Hell no. He was a very good runner. Much loved and much admired for his personality and style of running. Also his association with Nike in its early days was probably his greatest achievement. Some of us Kiwis planned to campaign in the USA leading up to the Montreal games in 76. Pre would have been a good workhorse gauge to see how our training was going. Of the 6 of us, 5 were faster over 5000m and MUCH faster over 1500m than Pre. I was the exception as I was a slow dog. LOL. It was with great sadness that he died in an accident in 75.

Centrowitz ran the slowest time since 1932 Olympics when he ran 3:50.00 in Rio (2016). That's almost the slowest time in a century. I find that remarkable given the number of high ability recreational runners who can run at that pace. However, to Centrowitz credit, he ran a 3:33:42 stunning Mo Farrar (PB: 3:28) at the USATF in 2017. He knows how to win.

There will always be a debate over which is more important, records or winning. I tend to lean toward winning. Assuming that the rest of the field is appropriately matched, I feel that winning the race is more impressive than breaking a record. That's not taking anything away from the world record holders (obviously). Anyone who is able to break a world record (or national record, or whatever level record) has achieved something amazing. That said, I'm sure that there are many world record holders that would love to have an Olympic (or World Championship) gold medal. But that's just my perspective.

@firstbornjordan
@firstbornjordan 6 лет назад
I agree, it is about winning. It's about knowing your opponents and their abilities, particularly in the middle distances. Many fail to run their own race however. The only way I could beat one runner in the 1500 m was to run faster from the beginning. My opponent could not maintain that pace throughout the race. Yet, when I ran their pace, I could never match their speed in the final 250 metres. The age difference, to make it interesting, was thirty eight years.

When the Africans nail the first 800 meters in 1:54, they always beat Centrowitz. Guarantee that in the 1500 m final at 2020 Olympics, the Africans will run the first 800 in sub 1:55. Centrowitz better figure out how to run a sub 1:55 for his first 800, in order to win another gold. Or, he could move up to 5000 meters.
@ragreenburg
@ragreenburg 4 года назад
He has a mile PR of 3:50. Just because he wins slow races doesn't mean he can't run fast. He's also a 3:30 1500m runner. Both of those races are sub 1:55 for 800m.

The USA has destroyed front running by top athletes at the College/University level because of constant use of pacemakers in their races. They sometimes use two pacemakers. One drops out after about 500m and the other at around 1000m. So when the big Championship races occur, very few athletes have front running experience. No one wants to sacriface their chance and lead. The races immediately develop into tactical races and are slow. Fast kickers then usually win and the times are "slow" by world standards. BUT... there are quite a few excellent 1500m USA runners with good times, most all achieved in "paced" races. Do you see the problem? STOP USING PACEMAKERS, except for special races.

Well no one who runs that fast is totally au natural. There is always something they are taking, whether its legal or not. There is a reason records have fallen so much in the last 20 years when interest in running isn't nearly what it used to be. When I was running Said Aouita ran the first sub 13 minute 5k. Now there have been 5 or more Americans alone who have done it.

@@keeganhughes6947 The reason they didn't is that by pushing the pace you put yourself at a pretty big disadvantage by letting the entire field pace off of you. No one wants to go out and run a gutsy race just to get passed by everyone with 80m to go. You would know that if you've ever ran in Elite mid-distance race (Senior Men's National Championships, Olympic Trials or NCAA Championships). The only way you can win and front run is by being significantly better than everyone else who lines up.
