Even better he is kind.. gentle .. caring .. humble.. and funny .. a truly lovely man to all he knows.. snd all who so long to know him.. So how could you not love this beautiful man.. would be so much easier not to love the sunrise❣️ Jen999💙
This is 2023 .. first time seeing and hearing this video .. and this achingly beautiful man with the magical and mesmerizing voice .. is STILL achingly beautiful.. Matthew MacFadyen is like the finest wine .. and the loveliest vintage rose .. he becomes more beautiful as he ages .. As he will always be to those who will love him eternally.. thank you most ardently for posting this ..❣ Jen999💙
@@englishexpert1989 Everyone is entitled to their opinion.. however to me everyone is special in their own way.. actors are people .. they do their job just like we do.. some are more talented than others.. but all are human with good points and some not so good.. just like us .. We cannot accurately judge another’s worth.. perhaps we may not consider a person special.. just an ordinary person I am.. but my 3 sons think I am special.. and to them I am.. as for Matthew MacFadyen.. he has children who think he is a pretty special guy.. So it comes down to a matter of opinion.. we each can choose.. I choose to think each one of us is special to those who love us.. :)
He captures this sonnets meaning so very well in his eyes, his lips, his voice. At the beginning you just want to give him a hug for feeling so down on himself. I know I do, and at the end you sort of smile with him :)
Some one used this clip for a presentation in class the other day. God I don't think I've ever cried so much, this sonnet is so beautiful and his reading of it is so amazing
Beautiful man, poem, background song...voice and so much more. I wish I could see this movie...and hear even more poems recited by Matthew in that soothing voice.
This has always been my favorite sonnet, and to hear him recite it...bliss. There's just something in his voice, I wish he would recite more poems! I fell in love with him as Darcy, he's just so talented!
I recall my High School senior English teacher some 50 years ago reading this to us in what could best be considered a drone. He thought he could make us understand this sonnet because he could recite that it was in iambic pentameter. and tell us what the rhyme scheme was. If we had Mr. Macfadyen's reading then, we all would have come to love Shakespeare. Thank you.
Modern translation: When I’m in disgrace with everyone and my luck has deserted me, I sit all alone and cry about the fact that I’m an outcast, and bother God with useless cries, which fall on deaf ears, and look at myself and curse my fate, wishing that I had more to hope for, wishing I had this man’s good looks and that man’s friends, this man’s skills and that man’s opportunities, and totally dissatisfied with the things I usually enjoy the most. Yet, as I’m thinking these thoughts and almost hating myself, I happen to think about you, and then my condition improves-like a lark at daybreak rising up and leaving the earth far behind to sing hymns to God. For when I remember your sweet love, I feel so wealthy that I’d refuse to change places even with kings. #poetry #shakespeare #Macfadyen #love
This man can act anything. There's something so telling in his eyes and vulnerable when he's doing the poems. He also has showed it in everything he's done. They could probably just put a camera on his eyes and have him recite anything and you could feel the expression. Beautiful :D
What a truly splendid, fresh take on a sonnet that over the years grew a tad tired to my eyes and ears from over use, and then one day quietly departing, almost unnoticed, from my very consciousness. With this unpretentious, almost tongue in cheek, playful delivery by an actor solidly (impressively) in full charge of his craft, it takes on new layers of meaning and is, once again, solidly tucked away in my treasure chest of "most meaningful" poetry. Matthew does the Bard proud. Thank you for recognising the uniqueness of this "recital" - and for sharing it with us ! 💙💙💙
Oh! *SWOONS* Dear Lord, his every expression and every movement reveals the feelings... :) Beautiful. He's just so good to look at when he gets into his role... and also when he doesn't ;)
It is 2023 and I just saw this video for the first time.. I agree with your comment.. That said.. to me .. Matthew MacFadyen is truly beautiful.. he was when this video was made.. and he remains so today.. Have heard many of his poetry readings.. he also read some pivotal chapters of Pride and Prejudice.. he was brilliant.. Matthew is awesome.. and a grand and gentle guy as well as a consummate actor.. Btw.. loved your comnent.. most ardently :) Jen999💙
I've never been one that cared much for poetry, but oh my my, he surely has changed my mind!! I could listen to that voice all day & of course looking at those beautiful eyes & mouth while he did so wouldn't hurt a bit. Lol What a hottie!!!
SONNET 29, Shakespeare When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes, I all alone beweep my outcast state, And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, And look upon myself, and curse my fate, Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, Featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd, Desiring this man's art and that man's scope, With what I most enjoy contented least; Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising, Haply I think on thee, and then my state, Like to the lark at break of day arising From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate; For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Not sure if you guys cares but if you are bored like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my brother recently :)
I'm thinking of using this for my wedding. Pure own age by Mattie in this clip, turns the corner on the laugh and sticks the landing. Another instance of pure acting professionalism by Macfadyen. I'm cs

Lol. I second that. I was actually looking through my literature book today and I saw this sonnet and I immediately thought, "I hope we listen to Matthew read this." XP
Il est ferfect comme acteur ! Csodálatos ember. Nem jutok hozzá az üvöltő szelek című filmjéhez amit 1998 bán forgatták , magyarul ou en français . Megköszönném ,Merci
