Kudos to Boklöv från Finland. He changed the ski jumping forever. We (and all the others) initially laughed at him, but he was really ahead of his time.
@MrJuha82 Jan Boklöv is a 1988-89 World Cuo winner and most known for inventing V-style i remeber him to make a huge jumps and judges given him a law marks becausethe style was unknown and uncorret back there, after him the V-style has been the standart among ski jumpers.
@kJell01 When starting out in skijumping you don't start in these hills, but far smaller ones, where you can jump around 10-15 meters. As you, and your confidence, grows you can move to larger hills. The world record ski jump is currently 246.5 meters, set in the Vikersund Hill in Norway, by Norwegian jumper Johan Remen Evensen. Crashes in ski jumping does occur, either by tumbling in air, or falling after landing. I do not know of any fatal crashes, but do not take my word for it.
It is sad that he is gone but to even be considered great you have to get stronger over time, not weaker. I will never understand those who claim that someone is great just because of achievements in sports. It is over time you show what you are made of. Sports may help you but in some cases it can actually drag you down and Matti is an example of the later.
@laiosto Most hills today has a chairlift like you would find in alpine skiing hills. Either all the way to the top, or to the bottom of the tower. This is because some take off-ramps are elevated above ground, like in this video from Lahti, Finland. The towers then usually have a normal elevator to ferry people to the top. If the chairlift is not present you have to walk the bottom part, or drive, which is probably more likely. Regardless, you have to anticipate climbing some stairs.
@kJell01 There has been quite serious injuries though, especially back injuries are dangerous. Despite the use of crash helmets, head injuries also occurs, along with the danger of breaking bones and tendons. Still, ski jumping is not an overly dangerous sport, and the amount of injuries is not alarmingly high.
He won because he got higher style points. Boklöv jumped longer, but the judges reduced his points because the v-style wasn't accepted. Every judge reduced his style points with 1-2 points. If they hadn't done that, Boklöv probably whould have won several more competitions.
@MrJuha82 Andreas Goldberger instead Boklov? The first 5 is ok,may be i would puted them in another line.I have to thinke about the all time greatest because i am watching Ski Jumping from 1984.Norvigean Birger Ruud was a legend, won the olympic gold in 1932 and 1936 and silver in 1948.
