@@bw5277 yeah they are going to spend $300K taken from the food bank account..for study..announced a couple of days ago..$300,000 to study the impact?'...duh? really?..we already know the answer..bankrupt the county and property values plummet..10-14K lost jobs..$2.5 BILLION lost revenue..

For the local’s sake, this better be political posturing with little bite. Otherwise Maui will become a fishing village with a lack of jobs and a terrible economy. Aside from the massive property taxes STRs bring the county, all the guest taxes STRs bring to the county, 7000 units will bring easily $1 billion dollars of tourist money yearly. The county will be bankrupt without those 7000 units and all the small business will close. Locals will be hurt the most. What you need is to bring in single family home developers that can knock out 1000 units in a year or two. What local family will want to live in a condo with no closets or laundry facilities in their unit and 1 parking stall, yet pay $16,000 per year in condo fees? Many of these properties were built for short term rentals and have always been short term rentals. Anyway for the local’s sake…. I hope your government doesn’t implode your economy.

How stupid can people in charge be? Lahina needs to be rebuilt, remove the red tape and let contracted build build build in lahina and restrict it to locals only, leave the tourism revenue alone nobody is going to be able to afford to live there or want to live there long term

Is this a good thing? Is this so that it will stop airbnbs and give more people some long-term housing? I hope so I hope this isn't just another joke by the government to make it even harder for people to find somewhere to live

Tourism is already low to begin with. Then they are going to cry and wonder why tourism is even lower. Then they are going to give themselves a pay raise for doing such a shitty job like they did with the Lahaina fires. SMDH LMAO

Everyone in that press conference probably supported the “Stay away from Maui right now.” message. As they made other business on Maui suffer with them. At the end when the council member said “What good are jobs, if you don’t have a place to live?” Her next question will be “What good are homes, if you can’t pay your mortgage/ rent?”

The problem is so obvious it’s about time the powers that be start to address this. The final move will be removing non Hawaii born people from 2nd home ownership. And giving the Hawaii born residents a rent to own agreement at a reasonable set price. Mahalo Nui Loa

That would violate Federal Antitrust laws. Not to mention it would be a bit racist no? How about we limit 2nd home ownership by Hawaiian born folks on the mainland? That’s not right either. However, I will agree there should not be properties sitting vacant for more than 6 months. There should at least be either people living in them or have rental incoming benefiting the island. Vacant properties are often purchased by foreign investors for equity building and don’t benefit the locals and erodes usable land for living.

@@marcot3013 The real estate system around the world is proving to not be functional, especially in countries with great economic imbalances. The changes must come to allow the next generation to live in the communities they are born in. Also removing the purchasing of 2nd homes/property for the purpose of making money. Hawaii is a perfect example of this problem. Where there is only a small amount of real estate available and everyone from around the world wants it. Particularly the rich to make money off the valuable real estate, this includes all the hotels. Residents need to have the opportunity to work with the land and promote the natural beauty as well as growing/producing food for themselves and their community. Perhaps making the law for residents born in Hawaii before 2000. Since Hawaii has certainly passed its population limit and should not allow anymore people to move here, as well as limiting the amount of visitors at any given time. This would reduce the escalation of pollution.

I wouldn’t worry about individual folks owning a couple of extra homes. What I really hate seeing are mega corporations who buy thousands and thousands of residential homes, out bid every family when a house comes on the market, then rent for profit. I am not sure how prevalent this is in Hawaii, but it is happening at an alarming pace in the continental 48. These companies by farmland/land etc…This should be banned and like you said prevents the younger generations from buying their own land/house. These corporations should be the target of governments.
