WCBS Channel 2 Anchor Maurice DuBois is returning back to work after recovering from Bell's palsy. DuBois joins CBSN to discuss his facial paralysis and recovery.
I was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy a little over a year ago. To say it messes with your mind is 100% true. The hardest part is just waiting and feeling like you might never get better…then you slowly do. 100% recovered now 😄
No lingering symptoms, 100% recovered. I was given a 7 day prescription for prednisone and Acyclovir. Otherwise, I didn’t do anything other than wait it out.
My face still has a really slight crook when I smile..and my eye still closes often but I’m grateful to not be fully in that shape anymore and I was 12.. That was 21 yrs ago🙏🏾
Never thought I would look forward to being able to blink, speak and eat properly again. Getting Bell's Palsy is a curse and a blessing at the same time. Makes you grateful for the little things in life like blinking.
i just got diagnosed with Bell's Palsy and its been almost a week. it sucks having one side of your face dropping and not cooperating. but exercise, medication and Vitamin B--100 complex can help out a lot. i pray whoever going through this is going recover. God bless and stay positive
I had Bells since I was a baby 👶🏾 my parents told me that the hospital said I was the youngest that they ever seen in 35 yrs old now. What hurts the most is that I look at my childhood pictures and see a half of a smile never experience a full smile or raising of two eyebrows. Now I have children my kids ask dad why you have one eye bigger than the other. It’s mild not noticeable only when I smile and talk a little but pray for me people because I still suffer in my ❤️ that I have bells. Please pray for me in my healing and direction of where to go for assistance and I will pray for you all as well.
We are in the same boat.. i got it since a baby... i am into synkinesis.. and through reading ... Accupuncture could be my next try. I am 60 28/1/2021. Realised it only last December... bless the internet... try accupuncture.. maybe it helps
Big hello to everyone here, who was diagnosed by this symptom. I had it last week, And it’s improving. Just want to say keep good faith and let it run its courses. It is blessing in disguise, grab this opportunity to look after yourself and recharge. Stay healthy..
two weeks today for me in experiencing pain now sharp pain in back of head behind the ear. swollen a bit but seeing movement by the mouth yay I'm grateful too it's a reality check for real to not take for granted the ability to blink our eye lol it's truly a blessing. devastated at first then the soul searching and we find why this happened. we have to take care of ourselves instead of putting us last. positive thinking and spiritual guidance really goes a long way to healing I think. glad to see your smile is back😋
I’m so happy with him.. I have Bell’s palsy since I was a child.. in the 1970’s is when I got it, they found that their was a correlation between the polio vaccine and facial paralysis and nerve damage.. I am also deaf in my left ear .. it’s so hard been made fun of my whole life about it but it shows their ignorance and immaturity .. God bless and thank you for shedding light to Bell’s palsy
I had Bell's palsy and it will scare mess out of you. I immediately went to the ER because you believe it's a stroke. When the doctor entered the room he said it was Bell palsy. One important fact that I would to share is I remember my mother having the same symptoms as Bell's palsy. If you had Bell's palsy, please share this information with your children.
I'm recovering from Bells palsy and I can so relate to your experience. So glad that you have recovered. I still have a few "odds and ends" in my face that needs fixing. No doubt it's a traumatic experience.
I am experiencing the same thing, had been one wk and still my face hasnt recovered, the corticosteroids and vitamin b complex would often crunch my stomach and its an inconvenience, after watching this, its inspires me to keep going and he is right, its life changing and makes us refocus our priorities in life and now I think I will have to consider my health as my utmost priority
I received a diagnosis of Bell's Palsy five days ago, an experience that has heightened my appreciation for life and love. As someone who values positivity, I am beginning to recognize the significance of more than just outward appearances. Moving forward is essential. During my initial visit to the emergency room, while restocking my area, I encountered exemplary care from nurses Faith, Miranda, and Brittany, whose prompt action and compassion I deeply appreciate. Warm regards.
My dad has had it for 4 months now, I’m 25 and he’s 52 and it made me extremely worried/sad. It’s tough to see him the way he is but it is getting better!! He can move his face a bit more. But he’s still not quite there when it comes to full recovery. It can take up to a year or longer to get back to normal so I’m just hoping he will recover. I’m sure you will too just hang in there. It’s so random and can really happen to anyone. I think Covid has been causing it in many people recently.
Just diagnosed with Bell's a little over a week ago at the end of a work trip to Germany...very scary...ALL of this is spot-on and very helpful. There are many facets to this...but I very much appreciate this piece, helped give me hope as I start the healing process after having finished up the steriods and soon starting acupuncture....thanks and best of luck Maurice!
** I truly hope someone can read this & gain hope** but you WILL BE OKAY. I remember when I first got it.. I was super down and scared. But I knew eventually it would go away. Staying positive is the first step. I first got it December 13th 2022. Now it’s Jan 5th and I’m about 90% healed. Take your medication, take your b12, run hot water on your face (every single) shower, do face exercises, massage your face & stay positive. That’s what I did. Don’t just sit around and let it run it’s course. Doing those little things HELP TREMENDOUSLY.. If you want it gone sooner than later then you have to go above & beyond. I even got acupunctures done. You’ll be okay I promise. Hopefully this helps someone 💛 you’re beautiful!
I got diagnosed with Bell’s palsy when I was 17, I’m 40 now and I’ve never fully recovered, still can’t move the right side of my face, smile is wonky too! Everyone I know who’s had it have got better 100%, I’m the only one I know that hasn’t!
I was diagnosed with BP 2 weeks before my daughters wedding. I was horrified. By wedding day (which was Saturday) I had partial movement from the BP side so I didnt look too bad for her big day. Still not completely recovered but well on the way. :)
It’s been 4 months and haven’t recovered yet , I’ve been doing different treatments, it’s tough going to work and any normal things because of the look I have but I have to keep going, hope anyone who has this to stay strong
Driving on vacation to Knoxville, Tennessee. Felt numbness in my face. Ended up in the ER in Knoxville. No stroke but Bell’s Palsy. Day 3. Hope this is a few weeks like him.
Day 2 wow what a crazy thing to be going thru 38years old never heard of this. Makes you self reflect on ones life. Not to mention appreciate everything.
I think this is devastating for anybody!! Everywhere no matter what they do!! We go "to buy bread/anything" and everybody looks at us scared, they show kindness and care and they want to help us and show us that we are accepted, but!!!!! IT IS NOT PLEASANT! We are treated DIFFERENTLY and we sense it! It is heart breaking!! I had bells palsy 10 years ago and I am not fully recovered. Also, I was talking at Trade Shows with thousand people in the audience - it affected me badly. I understand how hard was for Mr. Dubois, too.
I am suffering from bell's palsy from 21 yr and i was not well educated before to research about what was worng with me.I have been mocked by people so i generaly remain depressed and also thought to end my life at some point of time ,but seeing your motivational vedio there is some scope in my life. I am from INDIA and and i am studying computer science but not rich enough to make proper treatement abroad for this problem right now. PLEASE HELP ME OUT OF THIS HELL CONDITIONS. and I WOULD BE OBLIGED TO YOU FOR MY WHOLE LIFE.
I was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy in 2013. Sadly, I was never sent to a neurologist for tests and i have now had it for 5 years. I hate looking in the mirror knowing that i’m always going to see the paralysis in my face. At my age all I can think about is how ugly it makes me feel. When i was first diagnosed, i couldn’t close my left eye and slept with an eye patch, my eye watered constantly, my mouth is dropped, when i try to smile my eye looks closed but not all the way, i couldn’t taste anything on the left side of my mouth, and my ear was always hurting. my mouth regained taste and my ear stopped hurting but i still live with the rest of the symptoms
Are your muscles now over tight on the affected side or are your muscles still droopy? My Bell’s Palsy started 13 years ago. I still have areas of weakness but mostly my face muscles are super tight on the affected side. I’ve even resorted to doing Botox on that side to even my face out. Good luck in your healing journey.
I suffered this bell palsy diagnosis and it started with an ear ache super healthy and one day my lips twitched and boy was I so in pain. I’m on the steriods and I’m home resting first week. So praying I get back in shape so my family needs me again.
I started with loss of taste. Then when brushing my teeth I freaked out when I couldn’t hold water when rinsing my mouth. Got diagnosed today; however, I can still smile and frown.
@@prodhassle1966 Hi,Yes I am...Thanks God Im fully recovered now,and one thing I wanna share my therapist told me try to make your face and neck warm,Specially when sleeping and Using Air-condition or Fan.Hope you get well soon!
I got diagnosed yesterday! Started the medication right away! But in my case is just the feeling, my face looks the same as before, not noticeable change at all , I’m very lucky! Dr says that could be the worst it could get. Thanks God❤
Shamus Coleman don't worry it gets easier I have hade it for Neely 1 year 😐but it is progressing by the day you will get through it it's a long journey xx wish you the best xxxxx
Hi my name is Tawana i am 40 i had my wisdom teeth pulled may 3 2019 this year 3 days later my face was looking crazy so i want to the hospital. And now i have bell palsy and still have it and i work in a nursing home i am a med tech CNA. So now i work 3shift so no one can see my face jeuse Christ knows was best for me. Taken it one day at a time i am blessed❤❤😀
it is three months and counting.i did acupuncture among all the treatments I can think of,,it is healing at its own rate..io look forward to full recoery
I am recovering from Bell's Palsy (end of week 2) and I started having acupuncture. There is no way to know if the acupuncture is making the difference or if I'm recovering on my own. However, I feel that I experienced a huge improvement directly after the acupuncture sessions, so I would encourage others to try it. I was a skeptic, but I feel so strongly that it helped that I'm commenting so that other people can consider it as an option. This has been upsetting and scary. If you have Bell's, stay positive, rest a lot, listen to your doctor, and consider acupuncture.
Did you recovery? I had BP about little over 2 weeks and I am having acupuncture 3-4 time a week, but my face does not move yet, my eye can’t close completely. I am very depressed.
@@DVan-ew3il I recovered about 95%. I am so sorry for what you are going through. Make sure you tape your eye closed with 3M micropore surgical tape so your cornea does not dry out, causing damage to your vision. ❤️
I have it but like a lot of people I thought it was a stroke. I’m on the meds. My doctor says it should clear up in a month but it my face might return 85%. It’s the headaches that kills me but I thank God that it’s not worst.
I have been told I have bell's palsy for the second time, the first time was when I was 10 and know I have it again and I'm 22. People I work with and family are all treating me like I don't have it but even tho I know I have it I'm glad there doing that.
Just diagnosed. Still figuring out how to keep my left eye from drying out. I’m taping my eye down at work so that the right side of my face doesn’t get exhausted trying to compensate.
I've had recurring Bell's Palsy since 2013, I was 14 then and in boarding school. I lost friends, people would laugh at me all the time and I stopped talking, stopped smiling. Every time it comes back I get depressed, lose my self esteem, become a shell of the person I used to be. I still struggle with feeling helpless, unlovable, ugly... It sucks when you can't explain this to your family or friends and have to deal with the self loathe that comes with the disease alone. I still don't have my smile back and my face is still droopy if you really look at me. In Kenya Botox and surgery to improve on your appearance is considered unethical so that's definitely out of the question until I have enough of my own money..
I’m in my first week of recovery. Did you go to the mountains by any chance? I had just gotten back from the Ozarks, I thought maybe pressure from going into the mountains. But for months I’ve had painful knots in my neck and behind my ear. It affects me on the right side. I’ve bitten my tongue so hard a few times but bad in the beginning of the attack. So much jaw pain, grinding my teeth. I think the infection came from my lymph nodes. The eye irritation it the worst. There are exercises to do to help ease up the frozen muscles. I was told a bacterial infection causes this. And stress.
Woke up with Bell’s palsy on Christmas Day. It started off very mild, I noticed my right eye was watering when I woke up and I was struggling to keep water in my mouth as I was drinking. As the day went on I started to realise that something was wrong. I was losing movement on the right side of my face by the hour. At first I worried that I’d had a stroke, but I’m only 19 so inside I knew that wasn’t the case. After a quick trip to the walk in department I got diagnosed with BP and put on steroid treatment. Awful timing on Christmas though as there was nowhere open to pick up the prescription. I had to wait until the morning. By the morning the right side of my face was completely paralysed. I could no longer smile or create any expression. This was when it began to get difficult. Simple everyday tasks such as talking, eating, drinking, brushing my teeth and even sleeping became a chore. I’ve completely isolated myself since, only leaving the house for doctors checkups. It’s day 8 now, I’ve began to notice movement back in my cheeks once again. It’s nothing huge but feels incredible being able to feel my face muscles move again. I’m hoping this is the start to my recovery. As today’s gone by I feel as if I’m very slowly gaining back facial movement. I suppose this can only be a good sign. From what I’ve read a some people will not see improvement for weeks or even months. I’m hoping this early improvement will mean an earlier recovery. Time will tell. I’ve got uni again in ten days, but I’m not letting it get me down. Moral of the story. Bell’s palsy’s awful. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. It’s probably one of the most mentally damaging experiences I’ve had in my life. It will get better though, and you just have to power through it, you’ll be okay.
@@MarcelaE fully recovered now, bar a few very very minor muscle imbalances that only I would notice. I won’t lie to you though, recovery was quite a long process. Every day gets easier though as you slowly regain your movement. Just make sure you keep up with the facial exercises, that definitely helped me. Don’t dwell on it because it will get better, you just have to be patient. How are you getting on now? Have you got any movement back?
@@MarcelaE ahh that’s rough, I’m sorry to hear that. Just give it time, you really have to be patient with Bell’s palsy. If it helps I had vitamin B12 injections and took the tablets daily. Apparently it’s slightly correlated with the recovery so might be worth considering. Just keep your head up. You will get better so don’t stress about it. I wish you a speedy recovery, I know how tough Bell’s palsy can be.
I was just diagnosed.. so scared... 5th day..so depressed.. crying every single day afraid I will look like this forever. Please tell me it gets better.
I’ve been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy 2 days ago and it is very scary. Whenever I try to drink water or brush my teeth, water keeps spilling out of my mouth so it is very hard. I can still raise both my eyebrows but my left nose has completely shut down. I’m a 17 years old with 2 more months of school left. I am very afraid since graduation is happening soon but my smile has been ruined. How will I make friends like this in college
@@lesleymaclennan7899 thanks! It ended up going away in a week or 2. The doctor prescribed me with some pills that are steroids which quickly helped me recover to the natural state
I remember watching this clip. And July the 3 2018 all in the sudden, it strikes me in a blink of a second, my speech became sluggish and I couldn’t form a full kiss. 10 minutes Later I noticed I couldn’t smile and could not drin
I have been diagnosed 5 months ago and still not able to blink. Getting some movement back and I am able to smile. The most annoying thing about it is covering ur other eye so it doesn't dry out at night and when ur in bed and your tired u just don't feel like getting up to cover it but u r forced. When the light hits it bothers me. I just want my eye to blink again.
I actually felt it coming. I didn't know what it was at the time but I remember my face jus started acting crazy like something bit me. It got worse over time. I was thinking it'll jus go away but actually got worse before I went to the doctor. Am getting better but my face isn't quite rite yet. It's a long process
I've had it since I was 11 im 27 now. Recently it's caused me pain. I just had an MRI of the brain. Neurologist says I could have m.s. no one knows much about this disease. My Bell's never healed 100 percent. I can't completely smile on one side but yet the facial nerves pull on this side. So I have lines on that side. I also have a fold on the inner corner of the Bell's eye. I've been told it's not noticable unless I tell someone. I was told the only treatment is meds and physical therapy. When I was 11 a neurologist approached myself and my guardian for an experimental procedure. They said they were gonna do surgery on my brain but there was a high mortality rate? It was like 50/50. I declined. To put that pressure on a kid is insanity. So I've "suffered I silence" for years. Tuesday I get a diagnosis for the pain. I stupidly looked at my own MRI images and I have no idea what I'm looking for. I'm asking the universe for good vibes that it's only nerve damage.
Sapphire Orchid, if you anyone else is reading this. Go to an acupuncturist. Have had it for eons myself but with most healing around the eye as the treatments came much later. Just remember, you're still you.
Just an jupdate: I'm on day 4. My right sid of my face is affected. I can blink but I cant close my eyelids tight. I have to always remember to force my right eyelid to shut with my finger. If I don't I get teary eyes. Eating is frustrating b/c its hard to chew. I have to be very careful drinking water b/c it spills out. I can't move my right eyebrow at all. I cant smile on my right side. I didn't see a doctor. I'm thinking of getting eyedrops and Vitamin B-12. I can't flare my right nostril. That's about it for now. I do facial massage atleast 4 times a day.
I am searching this because I am experiencing it right now. It has been 10 days and I still can't blink. Never will think that I will one day envoy those people who can easily blink eyes. 😅
Doesn’t matter what job you have, it is a painful thing to deal with. I’m extremely tired. It’s affecting my time with my grand baby. Let me tell ya, it’s not just affecting the persons looks. It’s physically draining as well.
I'm on day 4. Just diagnosed yesterday. The first 2 days just felt like I had a cotton ball stuck in the corner of my eye, the nex night it was pulsing. The next morning i woke up unable to smile. Ive been on clindamycin for 9 days and I can't help but feel it had something to do with it, even though the net said it didn't. I have minimal movement and i cant blink, but I can slightly raise my eyebrow. I'll tape my eye shut to sleep tonight. The worst part is that I'm single and i just don't have the personality to make it without a decent face.
@@GlenCat88 Yes me to, I only had cleaning done but I bled profusely and got Bells Palsey a few days later. After steroids and a month my symptoms seem to have disappeared. Yours will to. Let me know.
+katiria rivera heh yeah- mines almost gone luckily, but really I'm just grateful I can whistle like I used to haha In all seriousness though, I hope you recover fully soon :)
For me this started a few weeks ago with a bad cold and hollow ringing in my ear - it came to full circle this morning, when I couldn't feel the right side of my face. My tongue started to loose sensation a few days ago - and everything tasted flat (including water). Its very scary - I went to the ER this morning thinking I was having a stroke. My advice to anyone thats going through it go to the ER. Don't wait god forbid it is a stroke. My eye is burning pretty bad - mine is caused by a bad middle ear infection. I don't know about the recovery time, but I can tell you it sucks. Those people talking about alternatives and all that should just go to the Doctor. If your primary care physician sucks - get a new one.
That's what mine was cause by. Im currently on day 6. I went to the ER and the doctor didn't even tell me I had bells palsy. I figured it out for myself. I do daily exercises and massages. Im taking amoxicillin for the ear infection and I wasn't given any steroids. I use an eye patch at night and eye drops during the day. I can still close my eye and my speech isn't too bad just b and p words.
@@prodhassle1966 I have improved but it took a long time. 16 months have now gone by and I am not fully recovered. Although looking at my face you would not notice a problem. However when I talk my mouth is still affected.
@@Fifi86911 have you ever thought of acupuncture or seeing a neurologist? When did you first notice improvement. Like being able to blink, smile, taste foods, raise a nostril or eyebrow. Thanks for the reply I hope you get back to 100% soon
Just came down with last week. I was told to actually tape my eye shut when I sleep. Had to visit the docctors for 5 hours just to make sure it wasn't a stroke. Cut back on your computer time. The bright lights will burn your eyes. I watched DVDs in the dark (scary ones !)
This video is so reassuring but I must comment on him saying if you have any other job in the world you can go to work and fight through it....not really. I work in construction and it’s not safe to work without being able to blink my eye. I have to take a disability leave from work because I can’t risk anything getting into my eye or if I wear an eye covering to close it, I can’t work without being able to see out of one eye. So that’s isn’t true but otherwise correct that time will tell. I hope mine is mostly over in the same time as you because like you said some people deal with this for months and even up to a year or forever.
It takes way longer than 10 days. Maurice got extremely lucky recovering by 4 weeks. It usually takes 3-6 months on average. My dad has had it for 4 months and he’s just now starting to slow very very slowly recover. Nowhere near full recovery though. Hang in there.
I’m on month 4 of this ordeal, I’d say I’m at 80% & hopeful I will heal completely. Mine started a week after a stressful dental procedure, I believe the stress caused it. I was prescribed steroids, didn’t help at all, it’s just a waiting game with this crap…hope you’re feeling better
3 days ago I woke up in the morning I found my half face bottom side is not normal it is not moving my gf feels uncomfortable with me now I had such a good face and with in one night 😅😅 but I am getting better daily I hope I will recover soon . Nancy don't worry u will recover try to be positive
