Timing and phase issues can ofter plague any multi-mic recording, but are ofter most present on drums, where many mics are used and a full range signal is present. In this video I cover how to route and align a typical drum set recording for time and phase, restoring frequencies that were lost due to phase cancellation.

@@GreenLightSound I'm 3 years late lol but I have one probably dumb question: what's the reasoning behind aligning the kick & snare tracks separately first, instead of just aligning all drum tracks at once?
@dbwproductions

Great video Joe! Thanks. I’m demoing this now (on drums) and also noticed the “squeak” sound, but, it was only present with Spectral Phase Cancellation engaged. I’m assuming that’s the culprit in your video. Rock on!
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 6 лет назад
Hi David, thanks for watching! The Spectral Phase Compensation is indeed causing the squeaks, as I've confirmed by using it in other mixes. I've since moved away from engaging it at all on drums.

@@GreenLightSound I've been a Melda user since 2011 and can 100% confirm that the spectral phase compensation is not beneficial for drums. I think we'd all appreciate it if the developers were able to shine some light on it's intended use!

MAutoAlign is on sale for 50% off this week (10/9/17) in case anyone is interested. You can get it for around $30 U.S. It's a steal at that price. I have no affiliation with the company by the way.

Hi and thx for this video. Is it possible to render it after the align process ? So that i start the mixing process without the melda plugin at the insert.

Would this plugin work on a live situation for delay compensation?
@ward63
@ward63 2 года назад
What puzzles me a bit is that the delayed instances are sometimes a very big distance away. Distances for Kick were: 0cm/33cm/130cm, differences for snare bottom/top were; 0cm/95cm. One could think that the difference in distance could never be greater then the fysical distances between the 2 microphones, so it seems really odd that this plugin places them at 95cm of each other.
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 2 года назад
I know, the distances make no sense. I usually just ignore them and check by ear.

Another excellent video. What about the CPU load over a whole arrangement - how much overload does this plugin cause? is it possible to render the tracks after applying the effect or must it be kept active across any groups
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 3 года назад
CPU hit is negligible, especially because you won't need it on every element in the mix. You could render the tracks, but I prefer to leave them on as a reminder of the processing. You could also manually move the tracks to align them with the values given by the plugin.
@filipdinevmusic
@filipdinevmusic Год назад
At around 12:50, why did it phase align (move) the OH mics? Didn't you want the group close mics to be adjusted to the fixed OHs?
@filipdinevmusic
@filipdinevmusic Год назад
At 12:37 you adjust the close mics group track, and then you get that squeek sound. But afterwards you adjust (click the analyze button) on the OHs channel. These are 2 different things, or am I going in the wrong direction?
@filipdinevmusic
@filipdinevmusic Год назад
And isn''t that "squeak" the kick drum pedal? Do you remember if it was that loud on the recording? I must say, as much as I love the idea of phase-alignment, these plugins can be, well, weird.
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora 5 лет назад
Is the Spectral Phase Cancellation causing "pre-ring" like a linear phase EQ would? Im def hearing it before the kick. Almost sounds like a squeaky kick pedal.
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 5 лет назад
Possibly, and it's annoying. I still get this artifact whenever I use Spectral Phase Compensation, especially noticeable on transient-heavy sources like drums. I almost never engage it because of this.
@georgebrown4315
@georgebrown4315 6 лет назад
Interesting video. However, why don't you just add the mautoalign plugin to each drum track and then align them altogether? Surely that will cut out the need to create all of these individual bus channels?
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 6 лет назад
Mostly because I want any individual kit elements that are multi-miced to be in phase with each other before I align them to anything else. Aligning everything at once will yield different results, especially in the low end, so this work flow has yielded the best results for me. I would be creating the bus channels for later processing anyway, so it's not really an extra step.
@georgebrown4315
@georgebrown4315 6 лет назад
Green Light Sound Hmm okay.. Thank you for your reply. I only just downloaded the demo a few of days ago but have so far attained some really good results by just simply adding the plugin to each individual track and aligning them all that way. I'll experiment with the plugin tomorrow using your method to see what results are yielded and how it compares!

Interesting stuff. I'm just trying the demo on some multi-track live gig recordings. Good results just dropping the plugin on every track and running it, but I think I'll try out some different approaches having read this. It hadn't occured to me either to leave some tracks unaligned. Shall experiment with that.

Nice demo! I use Waves InPhase in a very similar fashion to your use of AutoAlign. I was initially frustrated by AutoAlign and preferred InPhase, but maybe I'll try AutoAlign again. My method is very similar to yours, i.e., I align the bass drum front mic (BD Out) relative to the bass drum internal mic (BD In), snare bottom (SD Bottom) relative to the top mic (SD Top), then overhead bus (OH Bus) relative to SD Bus and the room mics (Room Bus) relative to SD Bus. Since I usually high pass the room and overhead busses, my focus is on only aligning the snare in the overhead and room busses. And like you, I sometimes leave the room mics with their inherently "delayed" response.

Thanks for this Joe. I love this plugin. Just wondering... do you print or render the stems once they've been aligned?
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 7 лет назад
Sometimes I print them, sometimes I leave the plugins on. Depends on how many tracks there are in the mix. The plugin is not CPU intensive, so you won't run out of processing power if you leave them on projects with smaller track counts.

i wonder how you find this easier than sound radix autoalign. also your approach has quite a few more (unnecessary?) steps than for instance the Auto Align Tutorial by "Mix Better Now". Please correct me if i'm wrong. good video though!
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 6 лет назад
I don't really find it easier - it's just that Melda's Auto Align is much more affordable, particularly when it's on sale. The "Mix Better Now" workflow is a great one, but is only possible because Sound Radix's Auto Align handles routing internally (each instance of the plug can send and receive on different channels), so there's no need for creating busses to align groups. I assume the creation of busses are the "unecessary" steps you're referring to. I would eventually create kick, snare, and OH busses anyway in order to process each as a unified sound. Other than that, the workflow is very similar in that you align the overheads, top and bottom snare, and in and out kick to each other, then align those close mics to the OH. But whatever works for you is cool - it's all about a comfortable workflow! Thanks for watching!

@@GreenLightSound Have you tried simply running MAudioAlign a single time with all drum tracks engaged, rather than grouping and bussing?
@XiyuYang
@XiyuYang 3 года назад
Question: should I do this before or after other processing like eq and saturation? Those moves change the phase relations too. Also do you bounce the aligned tracks in place and then mix those, or just mix from this point on with the MAutoAlign engaged?
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 3 года назад
Definitely align before any other processing. The phase issues created by processors later in the chain are minimal compared to the comb filtering of two mics that are out of phase. I usually leave the alignment plugins on the track just to remember they've been aligned, plus I can easily get back to the original tracks.
@BrianWalis-Producer
@BrianWalis-Producer 2 года назад
Question about this plug In. Since it's delaying all these tracks, do you find it necessary to nudge the rest of the tracks? I know it's not moving them a ton but would you take the longest delay and nudge the rest of the tracks up that amount to match that slight delay? I know this video was made a while ago but I'm thinking of picking it up.
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 2 года назад
No need to nudge anything else. This fixes the phase problem for the tracks you need it to without changing the timing relationship of any other tracks.

It is a drum kit recording in the video. No need to do this on a drum loop since it's usually just a single stereo file.

It's not really that complicated once you get used to it. Maybe 5 minutes of work, and certainly faster than aligning each waveform manually.
