To invest in Maven I would need to change filter systems. I would need a 112mm filter set to work with the Nikon Z 14-24mm lens. This is supported by other systems. Will Maven be considering a 112mm option?
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
Hello! We already have the 112s out from Wave 1 and will have more from the wave two coming out in March. Hopefully we will announce an upgrade option on the Kickstarter in the next few days. Best wishes!

First, let me say thank you so much for your support. I really appreciate it. Which size lens are you working with? The LPL’s will not be ready probably until March 2024. I would encourage you to take advantage of the deep discount we have for them as part of the Kickstarter. You will get as much as 60 to 70% off depending on which package you get them with but again we won’t be able to ship those until later next year.

Hi Michael. These look interesting. I bought your first set in 82mm with several step rings. Addition of new 2 and 4 stop fixed NDs (together with original 3, 6 & 10 stop) will give a fixed ND from 2-10 stops via either 1 or 2 filters, so a useful addition. ND stops 5, 7, 8 & 9 will require 2 filters, so an increased vignette risk with wider optics. So in future a single 5 stop ND would be of interest and I wonder if that's something you might be considering? Your new LPL also looks interesting (I'm a mirrorless user so unconcerned with DSLR mirror issues) as it can yield a VND too for greatest convenience, although I'm wary about 'X' patterns which I assume will still be a potential problem with w/a lenses - even with if attempting to use 2 new LPLs? Can you clarify? You cite vignette problems at 16mm with Sony's 16-35 GM and also sample variations lens to lens. I recently sold my copy of that lens, replacing it with a smaller, lighter, 16-35 PZ f4 Sony with a 72mm thread, so potentially less of an issue, but I haven't yet tried at extremes. I have also considered buying a mkii GM 16-35mm (82mm thread) but it's not an immediate priority for me. Have you had any experience with Sony's new mkii GM 16-35mm? Presumably similar issues? I'm trying to ascertain if I can effectively use your grads. Am I correct in assuming both 1/2 and 1/3 are 'hard edge' with 0.9ND? If so, then probably less useful for not having a 'soft' grad transition line. I don't fully understand how you can shift and/or soften the transition line? Presumably softening the transition relies by using wide apertures and longer focal lengths? But, if so then that's typically counter to what you might want in landscape shots (ie wider with good DOF) vs say portraiture, where a shallow DOF and mid-tele focal length is often advantageous. I used to use grads for landscape stills work (I still retain that capability but as noted - bulky, slow, inconvenient). Nowadays I typically correct in post (if shot RAW) sometimes blending 2-3 shots for extreme tonal variation. For videography I can see some advantage with a grads (as RAW typically isn't a viable option - ProRes Raw is possible via my Ninja V but has downsides too). But, videography use with a hard fixed transition line will I suspect be very limited - unless I'm missing something? Perhaps there is something in your "magic variable" filter that I don't understand properly?
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
Hi Ricky! Yes, we wanted solid grads for most between 2-10 stops, some way to get to any interval within 1 stop more or less, the 8 requires stack 2 filters but the rest are all within a stop including 1, 5, 7 & 9. X patterns are common on all VNDs, but some manufacturers will physically limit how far you can turn them, or oversize them. You can start to see some artifacts appearing around 3.5 stops on the mavens, and more strongly at 5 stops. Some of it will depend on your focal length (easier to see at wider focal lengths) and subject matter. I personally try to stay under 3.5 Stops. I havent tried the 16-35 2.8 GM II but my friend has and he said it vignetted even harder, so the problem is still there. both are extremely sharp however, so its pretty much worth it. (Best wide angle zooms on Sony in my opinion). The fixed 3 Stop NDs are at 1/2 and 1/3 fill. The 1/3 fill will only work on your widest focal length (as you zoom in, optically the lens uses less and less of the lens perimeter) I would say these edges are medium soft, not hard like the MAGIC grad, but softer. We will have more densities (like a 4 stop) and models (reverse grad) coming in 2024. Yes, the Magic Grad can soften is edge with aperture changes. Neither of the grad sets are designed to be "perfect" solutions, rather somewhat adaptable in a way that cannot be done normally. While many landscape photographers perfect f8 for example, others might want to go shallow. While some prefer to go wide, some wont mind changing it up. Thats the thought behind it and also why we made the 1/3, for those who want to shoot at f8 mostly. There are always trade offs for each customer and we leave it up to them to decide. The Magic Grad is my favorite because some days it's more overcast, some days it is sunny. Normal I would need several different ND densities to cover those ranges and this is why I like it. We will continue to develop it with feedback and hopefully figure out how to soften that edge up. Best wishes! Michael

As a Micro 4/3 Shooter, the range of Filter sizes will not work for me without step up rings and quite large rings in some cases. Using a very large step up ring will impede one of the most important assets of 4/3 its portability. Would you consider a 62mm size to cover more of the 4/3 lens requirements? Also, would you consider with the new Lens Caps providing a discount on the purchase price for anyone who has purchased and registered the original design Cap

HI Daniel - Yes 1 polarizer is about 1 stop of light usually, It can be more depending on the subject matter, but it's typically 1. 2 Stacked LPLs co-aligned (meaning their polarization orientations are aligned) are about 1.3 or so. Thank you for your support!

Hi. I am in Australia and did not find your filters until just after your first kickstarter. I've been following you since and am very interested to purchase through your latest kickstarter. However, I have never used filters before. I recently bought a revoring and a magnetic h&y nd filter to use with my Sony and Tamron lenses. Will your filters be compatible with my existing magnetic system? If I purchase through the kickstarter, can I arrange delivery to Australia?
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
Hello Ms Janette! Thank you for your question. We have not tested MAVEN filters with the Revoring, but y understanding is it is an adaptable / size changing filter adapter, so it should fit the magnetic adapter and then the filter, that said, it would be easier to get a MAVEN filter adapter and then just use the filter (smaller and lighter too). MAVENs are compatible with some magnetic systems and not with others (it depends on how the magnets are mounted). Yes, we will be shipping to Australia. Thank you so much for your interest!

The new filters look great! Will the magnetic strength of the CPLs be improved over the 1st round of CPLs? Mine routinely falls off and I've lost it 3+ times. Luckily I notice it and can backtrack and had a few nice people flag me down to give it back to me. But it is by far the weakest strength magnet filter in my collection.
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
Hi Chris! We calibrate each filter to be between 7 to 9 N which is stronger than any competitors that we are aware of. This said dropping magnets (as well as extreme heat) reduces their strength. If you are able to shake your filter off of your lens, it’s probably time to replace the magnets. Please let us know if you can do this. Thank you.
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
And if I remember correctly, I think you’re using a 112? If that’s the case, it should be quite strong even greater than 9 N, so if this is the case, something might be wrong with your filter or adapter ring. We anticipate some extra strength adapters coming out in 2024. We’re also happy to send you one of those but I would need to know what size you have.

@@MMaven I have an 82mm one. I was just playing around with it and it is pretty secure on my 82mm lens, but when used with the 77mm step up ring on my travel lens is where it can get bumped off pretty easily. Your new CPLs look really enticing with the variable ND behavior, so I'll be picking those up. Would you recommend I get a new step up ring?

@@chrisross3631 hi Chris - yes, please reach out to my assistant Adam and we will get that replaced for you: support@michaelthemaven.com - last year. We had a problem with a couple of the 77- 82 step up rings, and it sounds like you might have one of them. I think we replaced about 20 or so of them and it was an assembly problem with the magnets. @MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
Hi Ian - Its a great question. I have this lens and use it often with an 82mm kit. Stepping up would eliminate vignetting with a single filters, including Dark CPLs. If vignetting, while maintaining security is the way to go, yes, go with the 82. FWIW, I use several lenses in the 72mm, 77mm, threads, I exclusively use 82mms stepping up on those lenses (everything I do is 82mm) because of the flexibility.

Disappointed that the Day One earlybird offers have been deactivated before day one is over - feel like you gave misleading info, since there was no "## of ##" remaining listed. Went to check how many extra adapters I'd want and the offer vanished.
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
Hi James! I can understand that. Definitely not misleading anyone intentionally as you are suggesting however. Initial Day 1 offers were meant to always be based on demand and not a 24 hour cycle, so this is where the confusion probably happened. We left it open far past what we should have. We had no idea we would get this response, and we will be hard pressed to deliver on it, but we will try. We had a few other people who were cut off mid transaction and we told them all the same thing, go ahead with the $249 package and reach out to us at the end with a screen shot of us communicating with you and we will figure it out refund the difference. Prices are looking like they will change again soon, likely tomorrow or the day after. Let me know what you want to do. Best wishes! Michael

@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
It is not as bad as the Sony 16 to 35, 2.8. You typically don’t see it very strongly until you have two filters on it. So it really depends on what you’re using but with a single filter it’s very limited and usable. We have seen some variation from copy to copy so what I would recommend is to try it out and let me know what you think and I can suggest accordingly. The Lowrider will work on any lens but the problem with it is the magnetic strength isn’t as great so you want to make sure that you’re using it in the right applications. Thank you for the question!

@@aevoss In terms on polarization, LPL and CPL are the same. (In fact, a CPL starts as an LPL, then has something called a quarter Wave Plate added) The advantage of LPL is the color of the film we use is more color free than our CPL model. why don't the Dark CPLs use the LPL and instead use the old polarizer?
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
Great question the reason is compatibility- linear polarizers do not work well on DSLR cameras. Had we made them with LPLs, Then none of the DSLR users would be able to use them for auto focusing or auto metering.
@BogdanSorlea
@BogdanSorlea 8 месяцев назад
@@MMaven sure, but as you also say in the video, everything is moving towards mirrorless and LPL are (for) mirrorless, so why is Maven not moving towards mirrorless? I mean I'm sure DSLR users could use the current option of the (old) CPL + ND filter (a total of 2 filters) instead of us using mirrorless do that. I am really bummed to see the innovation being granted to old technology (DSLR), like it would give it an edge again (obviously not).
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
@@BogdanSorlea I think there is some misunderstanding on your part. we use the ND portion of the filter to color correct the CPL’s colors film. In fact, the dark CPL’s perform much better than the regular CPL’s. Any advantage that an LPL has over a regular CPL is not so much the case with the dark CPL. If that is the case, then there is no advantage of the LPL over the dark CPL.
@BogdanSorlea
@BogdanSorlea 8 месяцев назад
@@MMaven ok, cool. revisited the material and this time paid more attention to those details. I therefore assume it's fine with CPL as the base for the Dark (C)PL (or whatever the difference might be it's probably negligible)
@BogdanSorlea
@BogdanSorlea 8 месяцев назад
how does a Dark CPL behave when an ND is stacked on top of it? is it like a VND? and same questions for Dark CPL + Dark CPL. scenario is obtaining up to 6 ND by stacking 2 NDs, for videography
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
CPL + CPL does not have a variable effect, unless you reverse one of them, so they are facing each other. In the event of adding an ND to a dark CPL it just adds the number of stops from the ND. So, let’s say, for example, you had a three stop and you wanted to add it to a three stop dark CPL, now, it would become a six stop Dark CPL
@BogdanSorlea
@BogdanSorlea 8 месяцев назад
@@MMaven so the gist is that just the LPL turns some other polarizer-based filter (Dark CPL, CPL or LPL) into an VND (excluding here the complicated, "illegal" - according to the designed system - approach of flipping one CPL)
@MMaven
@MMaven 8 месяцев назад
@@BogdanSorleacorrect. CPL + CPL in our own system will not do it. The LPL itself turns all of the Dark CPLs, Regular CPL and even the magic grad into a variable as long as it’s in front.

@@MMaven how's the LPL's magnetic force tweaked, is it easy to rotate without rotating the Dark CPL / Regular CPL behind it?

@@BogdanSorlea its the same strength as the others. Rotating either is by design. In essence, it seems you've taken inspiration from established brands, incorporating their ideas into your own products, such as adopting Kase's magnetic filter concept with 'Low Rider', and integrating a feature similar to Freewell's magnetic quick swap by adding glass to the base ring. While there's nothing inherently wrong in drawing from the strengths of others to enhance your offerings, it's important to acknowledge the origins of these ideas. It's commendable that you excel in product testing, but claiming innovation in areas where your designs are heavily influenced by others' creations is misleading. Acknowledging the source of inspiration not only reflects honesty but also respects the original creators' contributions.
