Yes, Thank You! The instructions suck, I was ready to return my M-733 and your video saved the day. It would be nice if the M-733 felt better built and the receiver battery cover slid on instead of using screws.
Finally! I've owned this et733 for a couple years now and thanks to you I can finally use it properly! Not very user friendly, but it does what it's supposed to do! I'm thinking of upgrading to the Thermoworks Smoke.
Picked up one of the 733's and love it. Tested the probes with boiling water along with a HVAC thermometer for 3 readout accuracy. All 3 within 2 degrees. But I wanted to thank you for your video. The instructions were a little confusing, but thanks to your video, setting up the readings is childsplay.
Great job explaining how this thermometer works! I would have never figured it out with the written instructions given in my Big Green Egg version of this device. Got it up in running with your video. Thank you so much!
Steve, great job on the video. I had struggled a bit to understand the set up, but the information presented here made it crystal clear. It's actually very simple once you have seen your demo a few times. Now if I can just get the probes to work (notified customer service and they are sending new ones).
Good job on the video Steve. I've bought my 733 back in the spring and love it. Only thing is it takes a little more diligence in learning to program. One guy did a review on Amazon and he threw it away because he had such a hard time following the instructions. And that's key. Read the instructions.
Thank you Steve for the excellent video. I watched several others but yours is the best of the lot. You have cleared up ALL the grey areas not covered in the instructions. Well done. PS I did subscribe. Never let a good site go by.
Thank you for the very detail instructions on the video. I just got a M-733 and their instruction are not very user friendly. However, with your video I was able to cook the perfect beef ribs..Great job.
Thanks! Have been using mine for ~3 yrs and really didn't like what I thought was a limitation: ability to decrease the BBQ/Food max temp settings. Did not try circling through the top of the range, was the round-about way to decrease. Clear on the video.
Great presentation Steve. I purchased the 733 unit at the beginning of summer and really like it but I did want to mention some problems I've had. First, one of the 3ft. probes that came with the unit was bad but thankfully the company made it good replacing it with 6' probes. One of the new probes lasted only a couple uses before failure. I know that you're not to immerse these probes when cleaning and I've always been very careful when handling them but wondering if anyone else has had problems with the probes. Until your presentation I wasn't aware that these were hybrid probes and wasn't familiar with the previous 722 model which apparently had separate food and cooker probes. I'm now out of warranty period and looking to purchase a replacement and maybe need to purchase a spare.
you have the transmitter back on upside down - if you turn it around it can hang from your grill or oven handle - great review btw - I have the old version and it is great
I have a 732, the probes stop working properly/accurately after a few cooks. The first set of probes were replaced by the manufacturer and since then I have purchased 2 more sets. When researching this issue I found that it is a common problem with the 732 and 733. This device was supposed to give me the freedom of doing other things during the cook, instead the alarm keeps going off and I find myself babysitting the smoker. Don’t trust it don’t buy it, your better off trusting the thermometer on the lid of the smoker. If you don’t believe me google it for yourself and read the 1 and 2 star reviews on these products.
Ohh boo....you should have got a Grill Dome!! :) I'm a Grill Dome'r for life...but Primo's are really great too :) You're gonna have a lot of fun with it! :)
How is this still working for you? I am a beginner smoker and I want to get a dual Thermometer but I have read some pretty bad reviews on Amazon about this product. Could you please update on how the product is still standing up. Thanks a bunch.
Three questions. 1- Does the temp seem to be accurate on this? You have had for a bit now and I assume you have used several times. 2-How exactly do you do a boiling water test on a probe? 3- Is there a trick to setting up probe for grill temp? Where is the ideal location? I have a kettle grill so would I put grill probe in between meat and heat or to the side or above etc. Thanks for the great vids and any help you can give on my questions.
1. Yes, Maverick temp probes are high quality and much more accurate than a lot of cheaper models out there and are usually going to be more accurate than built in digital therms on cookers. 2. Boil water and stick the probe in :) 3. You want to set the probe a couple inches away from your food. That's close enough to have a good read on the temps where you food is (so you can tweak your vents if needed) but not too close that the coolness of the meat (when first put on) and evaporation from the surface of the meat won't give you bogus reads.
Thanks for the info. Yes we do have boxers. That's all we get now. Aint nothing like a boxer. The first one we got passed two years ago. Very hard on us. He was a great dog and we often are reminded of him.
Mom gave me one of these for Christmas. This review convinced me to ask for it after she pressured me to tell her what I wanted. Cooked a turkey with it Christmas day on my Primo Oval XL. Came out just right. Dark meat just melted in the mouth. Never used a dual probe remote thermo. Did not realize that just an inch above the grill grate is at least 20 degrees hotter than the dome so I cooked the turkey at a lower temp than I used to. The ET 733 is a little quirky and not entirely intuitive. But once you learn how to use it works great. Love the set point alarms for cooker temp. Really like the fact that the transmitter can be left outside in the rain (reason for the screws for battery cover). I have bought so many crappy remote thermometers and this one is much better. I am treating it with kid gloves so it will last.
Awesome man, glad ya got one. Yeah, then menus take a bit to get used to, but once you do, it's easy to navigate. I don't think I realized you had a Primo. Those are epic cookers!
StokedOnSmoke If I were a billionaire the Primo Oval XL would still be my prominent cooker. The versatility of the shape and the separation of the grill grates, deflector plates, and the cast iron firebox divider would be sorely missed. Great for reverse searing. However I am like you in that I appreciate the fortune of having a variety of grills and like to use them all. For example if I am smoking just a single whole chicken my Small BGE is just right and takes only a very small amount of charcoal. Look at all the awesome stuff the BBQ Pit Boys do with a Weber Kettle. I cut my teeth on a Weber kettle and a Weber Performer will remain a staple in my grilling setup.
snowpuppy77 It's good to stick to our roots and rock a kettle or WSM cook whenever we can...but man, it's hard to not go w/ a kamado or pellet grill IMO...
OK ... I just canceled my order for a Taylor Gourmet Digital thermometer and gonna get the Maverick (twice the price !!!). But I have 2 questions: don't the cables get burned in the grill? Can you order it with both 6ft cables rather than having to order them separately?
I bought one and found that the temp reading was way off. No adjustment possibilities. Would have loved to see yours tested with boiling water. I ended up returning mine.
luvdablz That's odd. Could have just been a dud. Did you call them? I had a recevier got bad one time and they sent me a replacement free of charge right away. They have really great customer service. I've owned 4 of the Maverick products and have never had an issue w/ temps be "way" off. And yes, I did a boiling water test off camera and it was spot on. What are you going to get instead?
Hi Steve, would you recommend the 733 or the IGrill 2? You did a great review on each, and it is a toss up for me. I'd like to get your opinion on this, appreciate your time and videos as well!
+Jesse McCarthy I like them both...but def use the iGrill 2 more b/c it can use up to 4 probes and I really like monitoring my cooks on my phone or tablet w/ the app.
The probe will accurately read 250 degrees in my smoker when I leave it hanging loose. However if I use the grill clip it immediately shoots up to approx 435 degrees. And what is the best way to clean the probes without damaging them?
I wonder how long the range is on that thing? Also wonder how cold the unit can get and still work properly? It would be nice to have since I'm in WI and I am constantly putting on my coat to check the temp of the grill. It was 20 below the other night and my ThermoWorks TW8060 screen didn't work right.
With mine I find the range pretty good. I live in a pretty large house and I cook on the back porch which is on the back left side of the house. Brought the receiver up to our master bedroom which is on the second floor at the front right side of the house which is about as far as I can get from the smoker and still be in my house. Had no issues receiving there. And that is a good thing because the real benefit is putting it on the night stand when doing an over night cook.
hi I got a quick question for you I am disabled and I do not like walking up and down the stairs to check my woodstove all the time would this work for a woodstove to monitor the temperature thanks
I'd say not, at least not directly in the chamber the lowest temp it can monitor is 34° and the highest is 572°, the manual says using above 572° will damage the probes, and depending on what you're burning in what stove, temps can go as high as 2000°. Maybe if you're monitoring a cooler part of it that will stay in that range you'd be ok.
I just threw away an ET733 and an XR50 Maverick thermometers. I also threw away a Weber wireless thermometer. Too difficult to program. When they work, they are pretty neat but in between cooks it is easy to forget how to program and sync the transmitters to the recievers. Then I have to remember where I put the directions. It’s a shame these aren’t simplified with less in the way features. I want to cook and smoke not play with annoying electronics. My Mavericks are not very old yet on my XR50 I get LL displayed instead of the temperature. I refuse to believe all four probes shorted at one time. These gadgets are just that gadgets. I will never pay another nickel for another one. Too frustrating. On my hate list for good.
Great video content! Forgive me for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. I was at a restaurant last week and the meat was cooked perfectly. I asked the cook his secret and he mentioned that he uses a 'Chef Remi cooking thermometer' to serve at the optimal temperature. Do you use this thermometer? The chef reckons its very accurate and has used the same thermometer the past 5 years.
Which one best to buy? Thermopro tp20 or maverick et733? I have read a detailed review and comparison of both here www.thermoprothermometer.com/2017/09/thermopro-tp20-vs-maverick-et-733-which.html that's why i am bit confused to make decision.
I have both. I stopped using the TP-20 because the temps were 60-80 degrees different from one another when using them both as pit probes. I put them in my oven and they were highly inaccurate, but the Maverick probes were spot on.
This is a great feedback for me to make decision. As online and on amazon it's seems that tp20 is the best thermometer but with your real experience and sharing, i hope many buyer's will at least think twice before buying tp20. Thanks for a valuable and real feedback
This is the absolute least user-friendly thermometer on the market. As soon as my Thermoworks smoke comes in I'm throwing this in the garbage, not sure who the engineers are but they should have just made this simple and easy to use. I've had it for several years and it spends most of the time in the pantry. Complete garbage.
