You say “Buy cheap buy twice” but even two Mavic Minis cost less than the Mavic Air. Plus if you purchase the DJI Care Refresh for $39 (US dollars) then you can actually purchase two replacement drones (within a year) if the Mini is damaged (even covers pilot error). First replacement cost of $40 and second replacement cost of $49. So one could actually purchase THREE Mavic Minis for roughly $400 LESS than the Mavic Air.

Yes but you wont have all the features and better video/image quality, obstacle detection and so on if you have the mini for all that time. Plus, you have to go through the buying process and waiting etc all over again

Did you guys even read the comment? It had nothing to do with features, only in regard to the "cheap quality" of the Mini.

DanJ the “cheap quality” of the Mini is still a better buy than the Air. Better quality video than the Air. The only reason it is less expensive is due to obstacle avoidance detection. So IMO the Mini is a better buy.

I've been flying multirotors since 2013 and just bought a mini. It's pretty incredible. I'm always blown away with how simple these ready-made quads are. If you already know how to fly nose-in with a manual unstablized multirotor, piloting the mini will seem like baytown frolics. It doesn't have obstacle avoidance, but for an RC guy, it's not really needed or expected.

I’ve found the Mavic Mini to be quite durable, Ive dropped it in a pond, dried it out as best I could then left it to dry over 2 days and surprisingly it worked just fine when I started it up again. It took another swim in a pool last week and I did the same thing, I dried it best could and left it for 2 days, still works! Also has some light run ins with some walls and some decent falls. Still flying like a champ. I got the care refresh just in case tho!

the fact that it feels a little "flexing/giving" is precisely what will distribute the stresses and together with the 250g weight keep it from taking much damage when crashed. (source: experience in not breaking it when crashing + phd in mechanical engineering)

The Mavic mini is a cheaper lighter option. If you want the extras you go up a level and buy more expensive product (Although , being two years older than the mini, the advances in tech have put it on its metal a bit.) ... the Mavic air. On a personal note. I prefer the MA precisely BECAUSE it’s noisier, and easier to find again if you loose sight of it while flying. Which often means not having to stop everything to return until you can see it again. Image quality is everything at the end of the day. And my P4(a) kicks the MAs bum. BUT, for MOST applications and for most clients. I have found that the Mavic Air is good enough for their requirements. So, I still use it, and it’s a great little aircraft. Because of its portability it is the one we take on holiday with us. And we enjoy the results. So. I think that in spite of it being much older tech, it is still relevant today.

Very informative👍👍 I own a Mavic Air, Mavic Pro 2, and I just bought the Mini and I would say the Mini is a great starter drone, but I noticed in windy conditions the drone does not respond well. Yeah, spot on video! I have a Mini and I can say that the number one drawback is the wind resistance. I was in the Dolomites last week and almost all the time the drone was up in the air, it displayed the "wind warning" on the screen. Luckily for some shots, I used the Mavic Air, that a friend of mine had with him and that one had no problem handling the weather, but for 12-13 min of flight/battery...for me, that's a big No-No. What can I say...it's always pros and cons... Cheers from Romania!

Hi, just wanted to add a bit of first hand experience with crashing my mini...twice...into trees. The drone fell through the branches from 4m the first time and at least 8m the second time and kept on flying. I think it's built to bend. The battery did come out the first time so find my drone probably wouldn't work and it definitely wouldn't have beeped or flashed. Also....have you heard of Mavic Care Refresh? £35 for the service (one year cover) with two replacement drones for £39 (1st replacement) £45 (2nd replacement) Essentially insurance with an excess and they cover the cost of shipping both ways. Not sure why they don't advertise it more.

Mini has better video/image quality (color and contrast), wifi-range, lower sound, more portable, new hardware/software etc. Also, there is no such thing as a "FIRST" XD drone, or "starter-drone". Then again, this i observed on YT reviews, is a common thing for those who got Air for example (but also those who do not have good knowledge of good footage etc) since before and are pissed of now since Mini was released XD. I missed the insurance by less than 1 hour and destroyed the mini less than 1 minute into flight. After calibration and 8 hours of RU-vid videos I launched the mini in 0 wind. For some reason it drifted 2 feet immediately upon lift off into the side of a building. It then dropped 2 feet breaking 1 arm and pushing another arm backwards, it also doesn't connect to the remote anymore. The $500 replacement just arrived. My advice: Get the fly more combo if you're a first time drone owner. Also make adding insurance the first thing you do! I almost got an Air 2 instead of another mini, but the air 2 fly more combo is ~$300 more. But if you have the budget, get the air 2 for the extra $300. I was amazed to see how damaging a 2 foot drop was to the mini. Once I get this charged I'm going to put on the guards and try to replicate my damaging launch to see what went wrong (besides not having insurance, or the guards because I wanted to save $100 :\ )

Everyone is still comparing this two drones with the price difference but in reality you can get the Mavic Air online used in great condition for about $450-$550 bucks, in that case the price difference is not that bad giving the Air total advantage other than the time of flight. I got my Mavic Air from the Offer up app for $400 bucks with extra batteries.

A couple of months ago I had to choose between a used fly more combo Spark and a new Mini. The price on the Spark made it hard to pass up so I bought it. Then this month I wanted something with 4k capabilities in a compact body. The Mavic 2 was pretty much out of my price range. So it left the Mavic Pro, Air, and then I considered the Mini because the video quality was still close. Not to mention the weight. Still ended up choosing an Air because again I ended up with a fly more combo for a great price. I think if you don't mind buying used or refurb the value is much greater for the ssme price. Buying new, I probably would've went ahead and bought a Mini.

That was a very nice, well articulated review of the two. With your Sean Connery accent. Which, you know, Americans love. I have not yet purchased my first drone. But at age 64. I'm not sure what I'm waiting for? No. I know what I'm waiting for. The Mavic Mini. And simply because. I am a professional videographer. I need cinema quality. I need proper stabilization with a gimbal. I need smooth fluid looking video. Something with some panache and style to it. So it's obvious to me. In relation to my true career as a multi-major music award nominated record producer/engineer. This little contraption. Reminds me. Of the change we all saw. Starting in the late 1970s. In the recording studio industry. When we went from our really expensive equipment. Where your tape recorder cost as much as a car. And your audio console cost as much as a house. Other companies started coming out with more affordable consumer priced equipment that performed, wonderfully. Prices were slashed. And one could obtain lovely sounding audio equipment. For about 1/10 the cost. And performance was hardly compromised. Compared to the equipment that cost as much as your house. For just hundreds of dollars instead of thousands of dollars. Putting it within almost everyone's reach. So this little Mavic, seems like the way to go! An incredible bang for the buck. If you don't go bang with your, bucks. Without any accident avoidance. But then again. We don't have that in our cars yet either. And that hasn't stopped anybody from driving those. Because you're supposed to learn how to drive, first. And maybe you should learn how to fly an inexpensive $20 toy drone first. I mean your dad did not give you his Lamborghini when you turned 16. Or at least. He shouldn't have. Because you must first learn how to walk before you can run. And I think I'm running out for one of those little Mavic's. But then again. Might I find a used MavicPro in good condition for the price of a new mini Mavic? So, I actually have my site set on the MavicPro. I don't need the MavicPro-2 neither the MavicPro Zoom. That's just this years models. And I don't need to keep up with the Joneses or the Donald Chump's. So thank you so much. For that simply marvelous review. I think you said it all the way it needed to be said. In a most intelligent and professional manner. Thank you. RemyRAD FETsounds.com

Whichever drone you get, make sure to buy a sub 50$ toy drone also! You'll get plenty of piloting practice early on without fear of an expensive repair or replacement if you wreck it. Toy drones also tend to work well indoors and kids tend to love them too!

It seems that DJI could take a lesson from Tesla and offer software upgrades like auto tracking, manual modes and maybe 4K at a cost. Tesla offers autonomous driving at $7000 which is just a software upgrade. That would avoid the cannibalizing effect of their other models.

regarding this “buying cheap, buy twice” thing you mentioned: if you purchase DJI Care for your Mini, it changes this statement a bit, doesn’t it?
@frankinblackpool
@frankinblackpool 4 года назад
Not really. You can quickly outgrow the capabilities of a Mavic Mini and go looking for a drone with extra features. Don't underestimate the power of manually controlling the shutter speed and white balance. This alone fits the "Buy Cheap, pay Twice" analogy when you wished that you spent a bit more for those features.

the1lemming you might be right, but for a real beginner it can still be the perfect first step. then you can sell it with a marginal loss as the demand seems to be quite high. but I think he meant that it is light and thin and it is easy to crash it so you have to buy it again. with DJI Care you don’t...

@@frankinblackpool No drone can compete with the travel abilites, due to the size and legal limits of a +250g drone. In Germany for example I can only legally fly within line of sight and I still have to be able to see the orientation of the drone, but drones under 250g are concidered to be always within line of sight as long as I have video transmission from the drone.

Have a Phantom 4 but that thing is so huge, I can't take that out of my house most of the time because of the size. The Mavic Mini fly more pack can fit everything in the case it comes in even with my old iphone, except for the propeller guards. Man I love this thing.

I have a Mavic Mini. For my needs it is a no brainer. I would argue there is Nothing in the Mavic Air that would make it superior considering my needs. I always thought that the Air would have better video quality considering the specs on paper. You have a different opinion and it is true that, from the comparisons I have seen online, I can't really pick one over the other. Both seem good enough. About it being durable... I don't know how long the Mini will last my 10 thumbs but I can't agree on your statement that it is fragile. My Mini survived something I wouldn't consider possible. Maybe I was lucky, but that drone took a beating like a pro wrestler against Mcgregor. It also lasted about 40 secs.

Great video. I love my mini! Much better then the air I sold last year. I have been flying in Canada winter's for many years and have never had a problem like I did two days ago. I was flying in -4 Celsius over a creek and my mini just dropped and I was extremely lucky it landed on an island of snow. I had an IMU error on my screen. I guess the mini is more sensitive to cold then most bigger drones. Just thought I would share ! Keep up the great work with these videos! My favorite drone channel for sure👌

Not so sure I agree with you about the Mini's durability. Time will tell but often flexible beats rigid when crashing. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. As a Phantom II owner, I am really enjoying the Mini!

Nice comparison, thank you! The one statement that I don't agree with is that the auto white balance of the Mavic Mini is good enough in 99% of the cases. I was shooting a snowy landscape the other day and the white balance had spectacular shifts at least 5 times over a period of 10-15 seconds, so I ended up correcting white balance in post-processing almost frame-by-frame, which is a huge waste of time. They need to add a white balance lock ASAP.

I'm finally going to get a photo drone. New to flying them, but just don't have the budget for the Air or more. I've got the Mini bundle sitting in a cart right now to purchase after a lot of consideration. Appreciate the comparison. I'm definitely getting the DJI Care package. ;) I used to be a photographer, but got tired of people wanting everything for nothing and being unreliable in their commitments. So... I'm just going to focus on shooting what I want to anymore as I'm retired and add the drone footage into the mix. If it sells it sells, if not, I'll just enjoy it anyway. I retired last year. No nest egg, just SSI and my wife working. So the Mini sounds like a good place to start. If drone photography becomes something I really get into I'll figure out how to upgrade later. Who knows what will be available by then. Who knows what firmware upgrades will come along for the Mini either. Appreciate the compparison and honest review. One big question though. Would it be worth it to buy a used Mavic Pro (original) from somewhere like Adorama? I kind of want the extra control and the tracking. I'm looking at one now that has everything, but the shoulder bag. Cases I've got.
