The timbre of a classic black voice and presentation ALWAYS warms my heart, makes me so appreciative and enriched and privileged. I can't even imagine rock/folk not forever married to southern black gospel. It's so humbling...thank you.
I watched this show the year my Grandfather passed away with dementia. I stayed at my Nan's house. I actually felt love again and I'm not even being soft. It was a tough year. I'd love to go watch this show new years eve.
I first heard of, and saw Mavis Staples on a DVD video of a live concert performance (in 2016, or around then) with a large group of other performers. It was a tribute to the late Levon Helm, called ‘Love for Levon’ in Rutherford, NJ. ‘The Weight’ was the last one done at the end of the show with her and all the others who were there. I’ve liked her ever since then, and now have other videos that she’s done. I also ‘discovered’ at that time some others I wasn’t familiar with, like Roger Waters, Ray La Montaigne (? sp.), Grace Potter, and some more. Stevie Nicks was there, as well as more artists who I did know of. BTW: Mavis did a great performance of ‘I’ll Take You There’ during another one of her own concerts. I’m 67 now, and was a classical pianist and organist since I was 5, but like all genres of music (except for rap and ‘real’ heavy metal type music), but it’s difficult for me to even try to put her style of singing into any one category - she’s in a class of her own!
Wow...au natural, no digital boosters... How To Sing, lessons one thru 1,000... And Jools sings occasionally, but here he knows not to step into the circle of light...
I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead I just need some place where I can lay my head "Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?" I’m not 100% positive, BUT I think was Mavis who performed (along with a choir) in a concert with Elton John (BBC Radio 2 in London, ‘16) with the song ‘Levon’ and the other members of his band and special guests (i.e. 2CELLOS). IF I’m correct, it’s really worth listening to and watching her!
