In a colourful arrival in Dar-es-Salaam, His Highness The Aga Khan was received by Tanzania’s Minister for Home Affairs, Hon Joseph James Mungai. During the visit, The Aga Khan met with the President of Tanzania, His Excellency Jakaya Kikwete, the President of Zanzibar, His Excellency Amani Abeid Karume, and other government leaders.
At the Dar-es-Salaam State House, during a dinner hosted by President Kikwete, The Aga Khan announced plans for the East African Community’s first regional university campus in Arusha. To be built over the next 15 years, this Imamat initiative represents the biggest expansion of the Aga Khan University since its inception.
At the Zanzibar State House, during a lunch hosted by President Karume, The Aga Khan described Zanzibar as a “cultural jewel” and renewed the AKDN’s commitment to working with the people of Zanzibar to make the jewel better known throughout the world.
