Welcome to Kline Academy, a place where time stops and inspiration begins.
Our online classes are now live! Head to kline-online.teachable.com/ to sign up and receive personal instruction from our Kline Academy Master Artists! Or if you live in the Los Angeles Area learn about our Academy at klineacademy.com
Kline Academy is an atelier experience... when you walk through our doors you will see easels spattered in colorful bits of paint, works of art from classical master copies, fine French Academy style drawings to contemporary abstracts. Large plaster casts of Roman busts for drawing fill the back studio, sky lights stream light down on a model stand draped in colorful fabric and the sweet smell of oil paint is in the air.
I started Kline Academy in 2007 to give anyone who seeks a better art education an opportunity to learn these historic painting techniques brush stroke by brush stroke, the way I learned to paint from the master artists I was fortunate to study under. I understand an artist's frustration at having a great idea but not being able to execute it with polish and panache. My motto is that "your frustration ends at our front door." Our students come from a diverse background of careers, all ages and all skill levels from absolute beginner to skilled artists. The only requirement we have is the desire and the passion to make art. And I ensure that all will learn and grow because the teachers on our staff are people who I myself would want to study with, exceptional artists who are skilled at teaching and nurturing to their students.
It is because of my vision to create a respectable art academy that is founded on classical foundations in art, a linage that has been passed down from master to student since the renaissance, that we have thrived. We are a place where people of any age and background can learn fundamentals of art making from classical realism to contemporary painting.

It reminded me of when we painted with Max and Irwin ( great painter also) in the mornings at A&D on 57th street and 2nd avenue. Only a few would know what I mean. Steve, Gus (who now teaches at art students league) and a few other would be there also. What an experience that was. I was so fortunate and learned so much from Max and Irwin. I would copy them brush stroke for brush stroke, always sitting behind them. In my last year there I had both Irwin Greenberg and Max Gins Ginsburg as my art teachers beside doing the morning painting group. I learned so much. I still set my pallet up as i was taught by them. That experience was a once in a life time thing to have them both in the same place and as teacher before Pratt along with students of the caliber of Gus, Steve and others. We were all in competition with each other and struggling to define our own styles. It truly was a once in a life time moment.

I was also part of “ the old hat club” class of ‘85 from A & D. Great memories that I will cherish forever. I still have a painting Max did of me when I was the model for the week.

Question: how thin/thick was the paint for the part of stablishing the first shades? Like right before he adds the titanium white+ cadmiun red on the forehead, and how fast does it dry? should I feel it dry or still quite wet?

What does he mean by 'turpenoid' or 'terpenoid'? Does it mean OMS = odorless mineral spirit?
@marenphillipsart
@marenphillipsart 7 лет назад
Turpenoid is an odorless 'version' of mineral spirits. OMG actually has an odor. Turpenoid, made by the Weber company, is completely odorless.

OH ok thank you . Very nice done
@kelb6073
@kelb6073 6 лет назад
I think you can. You just have to know that acrylics dry faster. Also the end look isn't going to look exactly like oil, which can look more smooth and vivid.

and Acrylics dry a little darker too.

He mentions toning the canvas before starting to paint. Did he tone this canvas? I know that it can be difficult to describe what you are doing as you do it, and here is a good example. Maybe it’s too much to ask for a person who expresses himself visually to be verbally articulate. What is a toned canvas and why use one? A toned canvas is a canvas that has been covered with a thin coat of color. The color should not be very dark or very light but somewhere in between....a mid-tone. When the surface you are painting on is thus toned, you are able to add both light paint and dark paint to it and see clearly how those two values ( light and dark ) relate to each other and to the mid tone or middle value that you are painting on. It isn’t necessary to tone every canvas but many artist prefer to do it. This demonstration is problematic in the same way many other painting demonstrations are.... We don’t see the model from the same angle that the artist sees it so we don’t get to see why he does what he does on the canvas. This might be logistically impossible to do. But a photo of the model seen from the correct angle could be inserted into the bottom left corner of the scene.
