Army veteran from Schofield barracks here... I'm Mexican and when I was in waianae I found that my skin color helped me a lot. My white army friends had conflicts in waianae but I didn't.

Yeah, from the 60’s to the 90’s, a lot of hate for white folk. Things wasn’t as bad come the 2000’s, but now things are a bit more chill. We now have a general hate towards Micros and anyone from the mainlands.

Moved to Hawaii on a whim and ended up in Waianae and it was the best 4 years of my life. Met Max at the L&L Drive-in! The best beaches are there on the West Side! The people are great and never once felt in danger or scared. It's a fantastic place that is the only authentic place left on Oahu.

I was stationed in Kaneohe from 89 to 93 and loved every minute of it. I never got into any altercations with the locals in or out of the water. I have nothing but respect for them and wish I could go back to their paradise. Aloha !!

so, about the main private schools: iolani: local asian families who live on the southern part of the island punahou: good mix of locals but also a lot of white kids (children of transplants and retirees) and/or kids who couldn't get into kamehameha (see below) midpac: locals who live near punahou but whose parents don't want them associated with punahou or can't afford it kamehameha: hawaiians (school's application policy is to give preference to children of hawaiian descent) with higher academic standards damian: formerly an all male school st. louis: all-male school, known mostly for being a football powerhouse AND THAT'S IT

Growing up on Oahu, never had issues on the west side even being haole because you show respect, you get respect. But definitely lots of scraps in general and it’s a place where you mind your manners and manners are enforced. I’m still that way and being on the mainland now, it catches people off guard. They’re used to lipping and giving stink eye and being rude here with no consequence… they turtle up real quick.

Anything past the power plant, I think it’s a different place. Past the power plant, it’s the WEST SIDE of the island. Power plant all the way out to Ka’ena point. They are nice, but, they also have their rough spots. VERY DIFFERENT from downtown Honolulu

regarding the hospitality/fighting dichotomy, there are two ways to explain it: 1) it's a remnant of ancient culture in which aloha (fundamental goodwill toward all people and things) coexisted with a society made of warriors 2) hawaii is small. you see the same welcoming spirit in rural folk. it's easier to be nice to people when there are fewer of them. but at the same time, there's a lot of mingling and poverty here and that environment breeds tension. i grew up poor and fighting was one of the pastimes because we couldn't afford to have anything or go anywhere. but i also grew up around a lot of outsiders (particularly military kids) so i HAD to learn how to fight. being able to rely on your hands was always crucial for both boys and girls.

As a former Waianae elementary schooler Go Beavers btw. We had kill Haole days and since I have a Haole last name I would hide it all the time so I no get cracks. Scraps was a way to find your place in the class hierarchy and build your name. So then you can name drop which is what I did to survive a bunch. West Side !!! Waianae = Nanakuli, Makaha; the Maili (area): it is pronounced "Miley," as in Miley Cyrus; Yok's (Yokohama area)/Kaena Point (Dillingham Air Field area; separated by a gated black walkway; towards the North Shore; you can either see sea lions or monk seals in that spot).. In Waianae, there is a homeless community located next to a fishing pier. Waianae High School (a legendary comic, Andy Bumatai's alma mater). Far away from Aulani Resort (Disney), there is a small train track, towards the "Electric Beach" spot (it was nicknamed "tracks"). Junken Po (Ai Kono Sho) = "Rock, Paper, Scissors.."

I used to uber tourists around oahu. I would tell them that Waianae is beautiful…with beautiful beaches. Try not to be there at night though. But it’s like Max said…just be cool. Smile, say hi to people. Don’t be in the Chinatown area at also. In the day, I love it.

Our family moved to Waianae in September of 59 coming from Waipahu, my mom told me to go check out the town and the beach areas. When I got home 2 hours later, my mom asked me how was it going holo holo in our new home town . To this day & forever I remember saying these words to her, “ Mom this place is paradise “ ! ! Why I said these words to my mom is because our family came from another place I wasn’t happy to live there, it was a sugar cane town “ Waipahu “. The people were great ! They worked hard for the sugar mill. They gave their best for the sugar mills but th ey could never be treated as good as they should have been treated, forgive me but the sugar industry could have done better than that. Waianae was a sugar cane industry town but it didn’t are

The Waianae coast have great people , they are farmers , construction workers, teachers , lawyers, lifeguards, military personnel, police, fishermen, villagers, doctors, computer technicians, engineers,professors , professional athletes,food service industry, indegenious world advocates, and many more people who are from the Waianae Coast.We also have our up & downs in life,challenges that we have to face and deal with it the best we can, some how we have to take care of each other. I have to be more patience & understanding , one thing for sure is that I love living on the Waianae Coast & the People !

I think some people don’t mean to give attitude but they aren’t socially aware enough to realize they’re coming off that way. I’ve met people from NYC for example who are used to being more abrupt, rushed and closed off in their social interactions. I think that’s just how it is in a big city and it’s not necessarily rude, but in Hawaii we are warm and friendly to everyone, you’d treat the cashier at the grocery store with the same warmth as your family member, lots of eye contact and smiles, and when you don’t reciprocate the warmth with your words and body language it comes off as standoffish.

Just be part of the community. Anything that helps kids with school and sports. Volunteering at community clean ups. You'll get to know alot of good people.

We scrap cuz all the talking is boring. Being born and raised in Puna on Big Island Hawai’i I only scrapped a few times growing up mostly in defense of people who needed help. When I moved to Vegas for a year I scrapped so many times I can’t remember how many times. Donkey haole’s run their mouth and don’t expect consequence but that’s not how we’re raised. Everyone in Hawai'i knows how to fight. I remember we used to have beefs settled at the park with everyone even the elders there. Everyone has some training or knows a guy with training who gave them tips. Also I went to the rich kid public school on Oahu...Kaiser. Basically too stupid to get into Punaho 😂
