The short comedy 'Le chapeau de Max' (Max's Hat) with the french star comedian Max Linder was released in 1913. Max Linder has also written and directed this film.
The video is transferred from a shortened Pathé Baby copy from the 1920's.
Max Linder's (Gabriel-Maximilien Leuvielle) film career began in 1905 when he got a contract with Pathé Frères. With his high hat and his wide smile he soon became an unmistakable figure for the audiance. He was the first comedian to become an international star. Max Linder had a major influence on other comedians actors, especially on the great Charlie Chaplin.

There was a famous signed photo that Chaplin sent Linder which read: "To Max, the Professor, from his disciple, Charlie Chaplin."

8. "¿No puedes prestar atención? ¡Tan torpe!

Rather slow, then great finale. He's no Chaplin, though. Perhaps the "dandy" character is limiting compared to the Tramp.

remember it was the first steps in film making. Linder made the first mark. Chaplin had the opportunity to improve on it backed by big financiers in USA but Linder had no such opportunity in Europe. By the time he came to US his star appeal had waned. If he had come to US first before Chaplin, Chaplin would never have had the dream run.

Wave Rider Chaplin would undoubtedly still been greatly successful, though. His style, though somewhat similar to Linder, was different than all the other stars.

Honestly surprised by all the praise in the comments. That was a very poor film. Way too many title cards for a story that didn't need any, and a story based on a single joke. The age of the film isn't an excuse, Méliès was making far better films 10 years prior. I'm not impressed by Max Linder so far...
