Thomas Henry Sargent (21 November 1894 -- 7 May 1963), better known by the stage name Max Miller -- the Cheeky Chappie - was a British front-cloth comedian who was top of the bill in variety in the 1930s, '40s and '50s. He made films, toured in revues and music hall, and sang and recorded songs, some of which he wrote. He was known for his flamboyant suits, his wicked charm, and his risqué jokes, which often got him into trouble with the censors.
I knew a very nice lady called Mary Dozin about 40 years ago in Wimbledon. She often mentioned her husband Ivan and had told me he was the conductor of a theatre orchestra. Well here he is!! I would have more questions for Mary but I moved away in '76 and I see that she died in 1993 and Ivan in 1997. For a picture of Ivan - Google images - "The Last Night at the Met ." (I htought Mary called him Ivor and it sounds as if Miller does too - Ivor Dozen!)

It’s worth remembering this was towards the end of Max’s career.he had been performing for over 25 years.but delivery and timing are still spot on.Times changed and Max was left behind.Think of all laughter and enjoyment this man created.A true great,still remembered by some

Max knew that leaving so much for the audiences imagination was the secret. He would suggestively go to the edge but never jumping off he left that to the audience. His delivery has rarely been equalled and he sure could perform his songs brilliantly. His legacy will live on through time. Thank you for sharing .

2023 and Max Miller remains the Greatest Stand Up Comedian this country ever produced or has seen. Today's so called comics haven't a clue about entertaining an audience and should take a Lesson from the Master. R.I.P Max❤

In the 60's my father used to play Max Miller all the time and I still have them, but it was great to find it on iTunes and we can watch him perform, a great comedian who makes you laugh and not have to hear bad language, side splitting jokes, especially the one about the fan dancer.

How right Max was when he said "After I'm gone the game's over"! Music Hall ended with Max Miller.

Thanks for posting this, as I am needing inspiration for performing, and have looked at a lot of Max stuff. I am in Brighton and was in a fish and chip shop and in a glass case was one of Max Millers costumes, and all over the walls were his photos paintings and other stuff, so it made me research him more, as I would say he was my dads generation, and now thanks to you he will become my generation. xxx

Max lived a while in Burlington Street Kemp Town - the house has a blue plaque...I lived opposite for a while...Chuffed me to bits as he was my parent's favourite...like the man used to say "There'll never be another"

This man was the very top of tree when it came down to stand up comedy...The creme de la creme. The king of all comedians at the time and even now. Bob Monkhouse even saw that talent and sought out his advice on how to become a successful stand up comedian...that's just how good Max Miller was

(Not in this clip but...): (woman on the Underground): "Oh, is this Cockfosters?"? "No Madam; Miller's the name". (long story about a girl who knew "what's what". .... Suddenly the girls says: "ooh, what's that?" - Miller: "What's what...".

Yes Bob said he gave Max several pages of jokes & instead of paying Bob he gave him a masterclass of how to plan an act, Bob auditioned for the BBC soon after, got top marks and was on the radio a few weeks later.

This has got to be the most lenghly performance, from Max, that I have ever found on the internet. He was wonderful. He lived in Southwick (near Brighton) for a while and once lent my brother in law one of his cars to take his friends to a footbal match. As for the Fish Shop, the owner is, to the best of my knowledge, a keen Max Miller Fan and a member of the Max Miller Appreciation Society. Go into Google and look them up. Roy Hudd is the chairman and many other celebrities are involved.

Just amazing what this man was able to get away with in the 50's.....however, his personal charm let him get away with the same.....I can only imagine how bawdy/naughty this was back then, hence the uproarious laughter..love this

I think British audiences always had a taste for the suggestive, even if the powers that be, e.g. the BBC, tried to pretend otherwise. The British have always been hypocritical about sex, and still are.

Does anyone else remember Max at The Metropolitan, Edgeware Road? This was the theatre where they made a bit of The Blue Lamp film, where Dirk Bogarde shot Jack Warner. Unforgettable!

Wonderful , these were real comedians didn´t need "f" words. All laughs came from perfect timing, watch all the old comedians never a swear word,

+Peter George This is utter filth, the laughs came from it being utter filth. Well timed yes. But filth
@mikewellwood1412

And the audiences loved it. His trick was to make it sound like it was all in the audience's "filthy" minds, which it was, to a large extent.
@garywhitfield317
@garywhitfield317 3 года назад
@@MerylORo Not really. That was why Max never completed his 'finisher'. Leaving that last word off meant the joke depended entirely on the minds of the audience. Max himself summed up his comedy in one of his own jokes. Talking to a waitress, he asked what was on the menu and she replied "Roast Beef A La Carte Max Miller". He asked her why it was called that and she said "Because it's a bit near the knuckle!"

thank you for the upload. I'm verging on my 30th and this was uproariously funny all the way through, maybe being brought up on 'old' comedy like your Hancocks, Sykes et al helped but this was class

Max was my dad's generation but I grew up with Sykes and the others you mention. Classic humour is ageless if open minded!

Miller was the best, but Hancock and Sykes were brilliant in their own way too.

ps: the fish shop is called Bardley;s of baker Street. 22-23A Baker Street, Brighton. BN1 4JN. Here it is a un-official museum to Max. You can eat your fish and chips with his costume staring over you. All over the walls are poster, painting of Max with other comedians. I have nothing to do with this place, and only discovered it tonight. Do check it out.

complete and utter rubbish. I'm so glad comedy has moved and and actually become funny. This man is a total buffoon, but in a non-amusing way.

Times and tastes change and evolve but some of the later comedians would admit to being influenced by Max. There are some very good comedians today but also some who are complete nether regions. Max had brilliant timing and had the audience of the day in his hand. Buffoon he was not.

I don't think it's Max who is showing himself to be a buffoon here.
