Max Richter In Concert: Reimagining Vivaldi

Can't take another moment of Vivaldi's ubiquitous Four Seasons? Neither could Max Richter, a London-based composer who deftly blurs the lines between the classical and electronic worlds. Long ago he loved it the piece but like some of us, he grew tired of the overplayed warhorse, which can be found in no fewer than 250 recordings on sites like ArchivMusic.
So instead of writing off the piece forever, Richter rewrote it. He discarded about three quarters of Vivaldi's original, substituted his own music and tucked in some light electronics for a total Four Seasons makeover. It sounds a little hipper - lighter on its feet in places, darker and more cinematic in others. Still, Richter's remodeled version retains the basic shape, and much of the spirit, of the master's original four violin concertos - each about ten minutes and in three movements, sequenced fast-slow-fast.
Richter recorded his rejiggered Seasons with violin soloist Daniel Hope and together they brought the project to (Le) Poisson Rouge, the Greenwich Village music space, where we had our cameras set up and ready to roll.
In Richter's reimagining, you'll recognize more than a few weather-related signposts like the violin's shivering figures in "Winter" and bolts of thunder in stormy "Summer." Yet in other places the music is heavily disguised. The cheerful birdsong that opens Vivaldi's "Spring" emerges as mere shards of the original, backed by moody pedal points in the electronic low end, lending it a movie music feel. And Vivaldi's violin horn calls in the finale of "Autumn" morph into a comforting minimalist blanket of warm double basses and electronics.
The revamped Vivaldi is about as "classical" as Richter gets. For a taste of his more electronic side, the second half of this concert features selections from Infra, dance music he wrote for London's Royal Ballet, based on T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. For this music, Richter pares down to just a piano, his laptop and a string quartet, but he weaves in many unusual sounds. Here you'll find a dusty treasure-trove of old shortwave radio signals, industrial rumbles, clicks and pops serving as the underlying bed for Richter's gritty and forlorn soundscapes. -- TOM HUIZENGA

I share your love for music and dislike stats to some extent. Although, I don't with math and logic being the antagonists to art and emotion. Understanding math comes along with high analytical skills which I discovered are necessary for improving on my own art and which helps me recognize layered emotions in more difficult work of others. And coming up with a mathematical proof requires a high intuition of the subject, that's why often it may seem to have come out of thin air. Many times I had a similar awestruck feeling of wonder to that of appreciating high art while going through an elegant proof to a complex problem, making me curious about the author's disposition and his/her unique view on the matter. To me, mathematics is a thing of beauty.

I grew up in in a household with an audiophile father who spent the majority of his surplus income on the finest hi-fi equipment available at the time in the 1960’s. Classical music of every description was played at extreme volume almost every night rather than bedtime stories and the music itself created the imagery. Vivaldi was always a favorite.. and with this re-composition, I feel reborn again. Simply magnificent. Thank you !

I think Max Richter has ascended to the next level of music, as have the performers of his music. As young musicians we learn technique, scales, repertoire, touch, how to honor the composers. It's not until we have mastered all those things that we can trust ourselves, our technique, all our practice, that we can become fully enveloped in the music and just... play. Max Richter just takes me there with his music.

Vivaldi described The Four Seasons as The Contest Between Harmony and Invention and in my opinion I think he would be pleased with how Max Richter has reinvented his music with more a modern feel but still retaining the original harmony. I still love the traditional intensity and voluptuousness of Adrian Chandler's Summer and Winter versions but I adore Richter's as well.

As you would expect of a composer who once studied with the great modernist Luciano Berio, Richter is very self-aware. He notices that his own taste in repeating patterns doesn’t mesh with the apparently similar patterns in Vivaldi. They obey a different logic, and the friction between them generates a fascinatingly ambiguous colour. Richter teases out and heightens this colour, sometimes with Vivaldi uppermost, sometimes himself. It is a subtle and often moving piece of work, which suggests that after years of tedious disco and trance versions of Mozart, the field of the classical remix has finally become interesting.

Ah, to live and witness such wonders, basking in the glory of one fine November morning accompanied with the delicious smell of a strong cup of coffee Arabica are enough amends to replenish one's soul of the sorrows of the very same life... isn't that just marvelous?

Such beauty! On Epiphany Day in sunny, yet desolate and patrolled Bologna. It quenches the thirst for art in my soul.

The video is just beginning & I've never heard this before. I'll comment again when it's over. Am I in for a treat? I imagine so.

Это божественно. В такое исполнение невозможно не влюбиться. Особенно восхитило "лето".

Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past

Maravilloso trabajo, perfecta armonía en el diálogo, cada instrumento entra en su momento sin dejar espacio blanco. Muy hermoso.

It's a beautiful update - Vivaldi is perfection. How •can* you add to it? By feeding it the love, respect and life of 20th & 21st century experience. I believe that Max Richter has been able to do that for us. It's beautiful music, changed, and fuelled by respect, and love.
