Hey coach, what should be the position of hips during sprinting?? Should one push them out like a anterior motion or should they be neutral?? Because I found that by having a anterior push the COM travels faster and also the foot lands below COM. What is your take on it??

If sprinters sprint TALL, hips are good. So much easier for sprinters to sprint tall than to think about hip position.

@@coachtonyholler Hey coach, I am sure you have seen Dr.Ken Clarks sprinting mechanics video:- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xDnaQMlfQ40.html What he demonstrates is : •Peak hip flexion (creates stretch reflex) •Combined with faster leg angular motion (whip from hip) and stiff legs on ground contact •Lead to higher vertical force i.e. faster speed. But my question is, how can one achieve a faster thigh angular motion (whip from hip) what are some exercises/drills to produce the whip from hip??

VERY interesting. Loved Chris Korfist's comment near the end, that the future will be (largely?) about neurology. Would love to hear studies that record energy flow in the nervous system over time spent with overspeed training, and the ebb and flow of nervous system activity during best performances, rest, recovery, etc. Related: prefrontal cortex activation related to individual performance gains and how fast they come; how well the body responds to training related to PFC activation, etc. I think this is a huge area. Some of my fastest, most energized, athletically agile moments as a (former) athlete happened when I literally felt unusual amounts of energy in the area of the PFC. I know that's anecdotal, but I don't care. 🙂

Also don't think the egg and chicken allegory is correct. From physic point of view the only reason for sprint speed of any terristerial animal is force applied to the ground in relation to the body mass. For humans strike frequency is just a result of his speed, his height and leg length. Of course the different technike can change in some degree some variables, but strike frequency is not a cose, it is the result. So sprinting speed is: Amount of force put in to ground in realtion to body mass. Amunt of force is result of mass of the striking object time acceleration of that object (leg). Frequency and stride length are just results of speed and leg length. But i don't have any idea how this knowledge can be applied in training. Your idea than for being better in sprinting you need to sprint seems logical, and your results are showing clerly you know what you are doing.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. IMO, way too many people are ignoring speed... in other words, they want speed but are not sprinting on a regular basis. And, if you are not timing, you are probably just running.

I love the scientific discussion as explains the why sprinters run fast, but as discussed it’s about the horse at the end of the day. A fast horse does not spend time thinking about running technique.🤔

Where is the thigh split measurement taken from anatomically on the body? What's the make up of the split ie. degrees of hip flexion & hip extension?

Split of femurs. Varies from sprinter to sprinter.

Yes, but research of sprinting and training is vastly overrated due to small sample sizes and genetic variability. I rely on findings of coaches who coach, not those who do lab work.

I dont't uderstand one thing: for me to say than sprinter is applying force to the ground in 0.08 sec, have the same use as saying than boxer is applying force in to face of his oponent in 0.08 sec. In my opinion it doesn't matter how much time the sprinter or boxer have to apply the force, but rather how much time he have to generate that force. For boxer it is from position of his fist close to shoulder to the meeting the target, for a sprinter from full hip flexion to the moment of a strike, and that is much longer time, than 0.08 sec. But anyway, your results are speaking for themselfs, and I really like your approach to sprint training. Do you think it is possoble to improve sprinting speed after 30?

I see your point. The GCT of 0.08 seconds may have more to do with an elastic "bounce" coming from the complicated foot apparatus and tendons. Interesting. And, yes, speed can be improved at any age. I think Weyand may have the physics wrong. The force going down into the ground is not vertical it is a vector. It has vertical effects.

Because their force-plate only measures force not direction of the applied force, thus only the vertical component of the force vector
