Read the accompanying written article here: www.maximvengerov.com/part-7
In this new educational series "Vengerov's Views", I cover key topics which come up frequently in my masterclasses, chosen to mirror the journey of learning. It all starts and ends with the source, the music, and understanding and telling the story behind it. And then along the way, as performers we must overcome some technical challenges to be able to bring our musical ideas to life.
The examples in these videos are chosen to complement written articles, where I explain the concepts in greater depth. It has been an interesting challenge to write for the first time some thoughts about my approach to music and playing the violin - let me know in the comments what you think!
Part 7: Breathing to make music and stay relaxed
Playing violin is like aerating a glass of wine - everything must breathe. On the violin, allowing the instrument to breathe means letting it vibrate naturally, so the overtones add depth, volume and complexity to your sound. Breathing well when playing also adds meaning to the musical message, and helps the body stay relaxed. It is something which is easy to forget about, but is very important for any player to understand.
In part 7 of this series I share some recommendations for how to help the music, your instrument and your body breathe naturally.
Chapters:
00:00 - Breathing during pauses
02:57 - Sonata No. 3 in D minor "Ballade" (Ysaÿe)
04:12 - Breathing with the right hand
07:18 - Concerto No. 5 in A major - I. Allegro aperto (Mozart)
07:57 - Breathing to stay relaxed and keep a good sound
09:35 - Breathing before you start to play
10:30 - Using speed of the bow
11:04 - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (Rachmaninov, arr. Kreisler)

It is absolutely phenomena. Many times I observe musicians they are PERFECT IN ALL ASPECTS, with good orchestra, atmosphere of big event. Yes it could even make public exciting. But, here listen those phrases in small room show big importance of Maxim theory. I was on his performance (in Perth , Australia) . I bought ticket even not looking on the program. HIS name was enough. Finally it was only violin and pianist - bot a huge monumental sound in a big hall. I wasn't even close to them. But this concert is till now very deep in my mind (or heart). One most excellent, hot "stories" I even heard.

Brilliant videos! I remember Leland Chen teaching this to us many years ago at a Masterclass, breathing out and in with the respective bow strokes and breathing through hard passages

My practice of hatha yoga in the style of the Kripalu Institute connected my breath and heart to the bow. At one time I practiced using the metronome, 4 beats to the bow at 60 BPM, 3 octave scales and arpeggios and used many different combinations of breath and beat. My ability to temper my constant desire to abuse rubato for expressive qualities was greatly enhanced and made more logical through this practice.

Thank you Maestro! The problem is how to Breathe While playing, without developing Unconscious tension (specially in the middle back) when I either confront difficult passages or study scales in high positions. The Pain becomes unbearable....

In 9:47 , you say something very wrong: "you breathe in and your diaphragm is up". That is not the case. When you breathe in correctly, your shoulders go DOWN and your diaphragm goes DOWN and your belly OUT. Thank god that you do not breathe during playing the way you show it. Also, when one starts playing, one arms the bow during breathing in and one starts playing during breathing out , without ever holding your breath.

a pity that he himself is not breathing - the violin would would understand it much quicker, if he himself would breath - not only visualize breathing.
