Read the accompanying written article here: www.maximvengerov.com/part-3
In this new educational series "Vengerov's Views", I cover key topics which come up frequently in my masterclasses, chosen to mirror the journey of learning. It all starts and ends with the source, the music, and understanding and telling the story behind it. And then along the way, as performers we must overcome some technical challenges to be able to bring our musical ideas to life.
The examples in these videos are chosen to complement written articles, where I explain the concepts in greater depth. It has been an interesting challenge to write for the first time some thoughts about my approach to music and playing the violin - let me know in the comments what you think!
Part 3: Vibrato as a source of colour & expression
Vibrato is one of the most important expressive tools available to string players. With our instrument, we imitate the human voice and what the voice can do, especially the natural vibrato of a singer. On the violin, we have the ability to control our vibrato very precisely, and to enrich the colour palette we can draw from we must develop the technique of both left and right hand.
In Part 3 of this series I share some thoughts about technical considerations for vibrato of the left and right hand, acoustics, non-vibrato, and using vibrato wisely in service of the music.
Chapters:
00:00 - Natural vibrato of the human voice
01:07 - Technical considerations for vibrato
05:21 - Concerto in D major - Larghetto (Beethoven)
06:16 - Vibrato and acoustics
08:52 - Vibrato of the right hand
10:18 - Méditation from "Thaïs" (Massenet)
12:06 - Non-vibrato
12:36 - Après un rêve (Fauré)
13:22 - Should vibrato stay constant, or change?
15:58 - Concerto in D minor - Allegro moderato (Sibelius)
16:52 - Credits

We really enjoyed seeing you and Polina in Worcester MA last night! Your playing is more dynamic, physical and brilliant in person than online, and your kindness in performing two encores to standing ovations seemed to confirm the kind online presence you project. Thank you for sharing your virtuosity with the younger generation and taking the concert stage in my area of the world!

3:30 - his fourth finger vibrato... is *something else, something beautifully executed* ! I need to practise more so that my fourth finger can become more "supple" when on the fingerboard. It's the only finger that stays "straight" when put onto the fingerboard... I may practise some scales soon concentrating on *just* the fourth finger!

I was always fixed on my left hand for vibrato. But you opened my eyes to the interaction between the two arms. Instinctively I already integrated them. But exploring it consciencely is great ❤❤

Он говорит, что вибрато должно начинаться с фаланги пальца. То есть сустав верхней фаланги должен быть подвижным во время вибрато.
