Whoever named this did it wrong. As he says at the end this is "something about vibrato". Whoever came here to get a comprehensive guide (in 5 minutes??) Will be a little bit disappointed. However if you already know how to produce a steady vibrato this is a reminder on what a joy is actually to do it well and how you should approach it with your soul and joy. Liked it, it's not the thecnical video I expected from the title but it's still inspiring for advanced and professionals

Nice to see a violin expert who is not anti-shoulder rest. My partner and I tested the sound of violins played with and without a shoulder rest similar to Vengerov's. When the violin rested directly against the shoulder the tone was less resonant. Shoulder rests improve the sound. It's a no-brainer.

@dianal.1279
@dianal.1279 4 года назад
I don't think he teaches vibrato. His students are advanced. They know vibrato. He tells them how to use it to serve the pieces. Well, that's what I think happens. Love and peace!
@manuelgysler7661
@manuelgysler7661 4 года назад
@@dianal.1279 thanks for your answer. I am not referring to basic skills. In my understanding there are different schools of vibrato and even among the best of the best violinists I can see differences in their vibrato technique, and yes, they do talk about it. Of course, there is the question of when to use it and how. The 'how' can refer to the basic parameters of amplitude and speed, but there is something else I refer to: while some seem to use only or mainly arm vibrato, others use some wrist vibrato (integrated/merged with arm vibrato or not). Others talk about finger vibrato, which personally I do not see fit and useful but maybe it is for others. It might maybe be more useful in certain types of folk music (probably worth a debate). In the words of Heifetz: 'Vibrato... is part of each individual musical personality, something one is born with…expressing one's temperament.' I am not sure whether we are borne with it, I am convinced that we can change it significantly through practice, but I think it is true that each violinist has his/her very personal technique and use of vibrato. This is the level of reflection I am interested in.

First look at the position of his left thumb, it is well above the finger board with the violin neck resting on the skin Web between thumb and index finger. This allows maximum speed and control. He also leans his back. What he said about not holding the violin is absolutely correct and it is a beautiful sound
@groovellous1
@groovellous1 3 года назад
Left thumb position in relation to the neck depends on the length of the thumb and fingers. Fingers must be in the optimal shape and then the thumb lands where it lands. Mine sits under the neck as my thumbs are unusually short.

I don't know about practicing scales out of context. I mean really, when a scale appears in Bach's music it has a purpose and to me is very dramatic. Especially the descending scales that appear in the Two-Part Inventions. As for vibrato, the older I get, the harder it is to control. I wish I could produce a pure tone completely with out vibrato. Even Leopold Auer said it is entirely over used.
