Russian born Maxim Vengerov is one of the greatest violinists in the world. This documentary captures the maestro at 23, already at his peak and performing with the world's leading orchestras and conductors. This profile explores his musical artistry, at work with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and with students of the Royal Academy in London. This film gives a private glimpse of the man off duty, away from his professional responsibilities.

Translations of the Russian Parts- 1. 14:00 Yes, I am strict because I am interested in professional training/education. Just smiling kindly to a child and giving him an A grade (she says 5 because that's the best grade in Russia) for what? It isn't interesting and the student doesn't need that either. 2. (conductor) ? You did the same thing yesterday. Please. 3. 15:24 When he was five years old (not sure of what she said, maybe because I can't hear the part properly), they came to me for a class at ten in the morning, not really early though. I saw that he let down his hands (they hung limp), his eyes were heavy with sleep and he doesn't pick up, doesn't play, just stands there, I didn't know what was wrong with him. And then he says, "They forced me to practice at night." I said, "What do you mean, at night?" His mother was there with him at the class and she said, "Yes it is necessary to practice for three hours every day. My husband and I were at work the whole day, we came back home, gave him a little bit of time to sleep at night and then from 11 to 2 at night (she says at night) we were practicing. He needs to practice for three hours every day!" 4. 28:05 - His mastery outgrew all my opportunities. Right now, I can't tell him anything/say anything to him. There's a famous saying/expression that every pedagogue must strive, as early as possible, to be unneeded/unnecessary to his student. And factually, it has been a long time that Maxim has no need of a pedagogue. Factually, he has been alone from the age of sixteen. I did my job. And his creative development is due to the contact with wonderful conductors, pianists like Daniel Barenboim. This is already a great level of artistic development. 5. 34:18 This is not only a question of will, The hands must also listen. This isn't just art, This is also a sport for fingers, it is the training of muscles. If he wasn't taught from the age of four and was taught from the age of twelve, then the lack of technical intercourse (?) and the ... of the instrument wouldn't have given him the opportunity to express his talent as a musician. That is why I am very happy for him. Why am I proud? I am proud due to the fact that this talent wasn't wasted.

"It's like when you leave home as a young person, and you come back much later after having made your life. Your home is the same, looks the same, and yet, it is different. It is different because of the way you perceive it. It is different because of the journey." -Barenboim My favourite quote ever

Because someone watched a video about a violinist, the world would be better? okay then, guess that will stop violence of all sorts. Let's gather around and listen to some tunes. Joking aside, this is a good documentary that does need a bit more recognition.

i'm watching this for only 15 mins and i learned how to talk music in my playing, to play music like how a child plays his toys, to make drama out of the music, it just takes away my mind out of the technical side and savor the music. i just enjoy it and it adds more fun in my practicing, i love music more from this day on.

This has to be my favourite music documentary ever! Have watched it twice in 24 hrs, and will watch again and again. What Vengerov’s mother said about her son is true: He is a musician with heart, a good man, a big heart for everybody. Thank you so much for this documentary.

So difficult technically to stay in tune, manage all the complications of the bow, and get "it all" together, but that is only just the start! To make the music sound great is the real challenge! Plenty are able to cope with the former, not too many the latter! Essentially an impossible instrument, but oh so fantastic when all comes together! Love it!

@@MsPea I think you're misunderstanding me. I have seen Vengerov in concert and he is one of the most flawless players in the world. However, in the video, the gloves muddle the intonation and he is also using a junk violin/bow for the frigid weather. It was an artistic choice for the snowy background, not a musical one.
