Reconstruction of the Maximilian armor in Vienna. It is considered that the set is made in the transition style from Gothics to Maximilian. The original is quite small. Around 150-160 cm. The armor of the picture was made for the person of 175 cm.
Harnisch A 192-2
www.armorysmith.com/dospehi/ma...
The set was forging from tempered spring steel. The helmet is welded but we don’t think that there is any sense to make it 200-300 usd cheaper. It is better to go with one-piece forged. The breastplate is forged from the 2.5 mm thick sheet. The edges become thinner and are 1.2-1.5 mm thick. Also we discovered quite late one characteristic feature of the assembling of such set. It was that: gorget and shoulders must have been assembled with straps, and not with sliding rivets.
Maximilian armor is the type of German armor of the first third of 16th century, named after the Emperor Maximilian I. The name Maximilian doesn’t mean that every armor worn but the Emperor was, in fact, Maximilian.

I never would have thought to attach padding to the interior of the gorget.

My new armour is based off of Kunst Schott von Hellingen's armour harness, Unfortunately I do not have a lot of pictures of it.

For the harness for ME, I have lots of images of it, but for the existing/extant harness as it is today, I have very limited. I don't know why, as it is a fairly famous harness, mostly because its 100% complete, its not a composite set of all different pieces for different armours over the years.
@schwermetall666
@schwermetall666 7 лет назад
But aren't the gauntlets of the armor supplemented? I'm not 100% sure though, I myself have only very limited information about this beautiful harness.

Really cool Maximilian era armour! Not enough attention is given to 16th century arms, armour and warfare in my opinion!

Great video guys! I would love to see and expanded version where you can talk about each piece and how they are forged. Also talk about how each piece evolved into it's current form and why armored knights were so lethal in battle.

@@custodianvrael6471 I might have been using the wrong terms; I know this would normally be worn on horseback, but was talking more about ankle mobility in the event of fighting on foot. I'd think the non-flexible ankle would hinder standing with the legs apart, due to the angle the calves would be at relative to the feet. I'd imagine the inner bottom edge of the greave would contact the ground. I know this is a historical design for greaves with integrated sabatons, so I've been wondering if that was an actual limitation of armor of this type.

You do yeah with plate in general you need it for the harness to properly sit on you and also for certain parts to attach with strings but this set seems to not have any of the string bits or atleast not on the pauldrons

I love Maximilian armor and this harness is stunning. I am just not a fan of maximillian helmets. Not saying your helm design is bad; Its stunning. Its just simply not my preference. I know the Burgonet helm is also around the same period as the maximillian armor. Would it be historical to wear a maximillian armor harness with a burgonet helm? Just wondering for personal reasons. If not I will just save up towards a 1460 Milanese armor harness. Thanks to whoever replies!
@Techlawlogy

I am in the same boat as you I love the burgonet helm specifically the pointed version. One of the only specific examples I could find of a fluted burgonet is Kolman Helmschmid's closed burgonet from around 1520-30. Absolutely stunning work. I would love to get a similar example with a pointed top that became more popular towards the end of the 16th c. If you know of some more specific examples please share.

I always thought the ribbing on it made the armour look like it was made of thin tin.

if one of those tny release points gets bashed by a powerful force you aren't coming out of that armour easily, I wonder how they handled that back then.
