pfSense is definately easy to set up (I started with it on a dual PIII server when pfSense still had 32-bit CPU support), but it does take understanding of what you are doing for the configuration (and a small business at least needs someone they can call). But yes, jump in, because there is enough assistance out there. I look forward to more videos on pfSense.

Is this "necessary" or just a "really friggin good idea to have"? My elderly minded grandpa is the biggest security threat I have right now! 😂 And slightly off subject: My job has an entry level Field Tech position opening up and though I don't think a cert is "required" I'm trying to put myself at the top of the resume pile. Should I just go straight for the CCNA (I'm barely 2 weeks in) or dial it back and go for Cisco's CCT just to shimmy my way in for now? I ask because I don't see aaaaaannnyyy RU-vid videos that go into depth on CCT so it has me thinking it's a useless cert. Thanks for all you do!
@TheBeardedITDad
@TheBeardedITDad Год назад
So is it Necessary? I feel so because your protecting everything behind your firewall.. do people run without firewalls all the time.. but I wouldn't recommend it. As for the Entry level field Tech I would defiantly apply and start studying for the CCNA if you have the fundamental knowledge. .. Not to many people talk about the CCT because almost no employers know what it is comparatively to the CCNA.. My advice is skip the CCT and get your CCNA.

@@TheBeardedITDad Appreciate that as always. So pretty much I'm trying to beat all the other employees to the punch and I know it's gonna take me no less than a whole month to even be ready for the CCNA! 😂 I know some things like the CLI and subnetting stuff so I already have the advantage over the other potentials at my location so I was trying to find a quick way to validate that, get the tech position and continue my CCNA studies while actually doing the job. From what I understand they're picking up anyone at all from within the company that wants to get into IT.

@@hugejackedman3447: What does the "Field Tech" position deal with? Are there any aspects to networking skills (as you have by understanding subnetting better than your possible competition)? Get a job description of that role with the company and tailor yourself to the job. Sure, get CCNA if you want, but is it what they are looking for in an "entry-level" Field Tech?

Firewalls aren't necessary, but a good idea, they block ports, allow you to look at logs, shape traffic, and much more: You can block the RDP protocol port on your grandfather's computer to prevent him from falling for remote access scams.

@@IBM_Museum According to the posting I don't need to know anything at all. What's going on is (I work at a retail store) they basically they lost a lot of techs and are looking to hire and train in-house anyone who is interested so it's basically omn-the-job training. And according to one of the level 3 guys I asked (5+ years experience, know all the expected technologies like Sd-Wan, firewall config etc) all they do is travel to various locations and fix stuff. Replace cables, configure routers that sort of thing. But because the position in question doesn't require any prior knowledge the reason I'm looking at a quick cert "just for the moment" is because anyone at all can get it. I want them to look at all the applicants and say "Well this guy here already has Cert XYZ so we'll consider him first". This way I can be learning and working at the same time. And again I don't "need" to be certified I just want something asap to validate that I already know the most basic stuff just to get priority over the people who "don't".
