This was a great change of pace from the ubiquitous gaming builds and a great example for the normals that do also use computers.

I built a new machine (first time in 20 years!) with a Ryzen 5 7600X and an Asrock B650M Pro RS motherboard. It also has (somewhat anemic) iGPU and I have been quite impressed that OBS recording (at 1080p resolution) has worked out well. The beauty of the desktop custom-built universe is that it is still possible to mix and match the parts you need for your particular situation, and still have room to expand and grow. I am still researching where to go next regarding discrete graphics hardware, but the iGPU is meeting my basic needs, including AMD’s video codecs used quite well in OBS!

Thanks, a friend of mine is looking to build a small pc with decent graphics - he'll be doing basic video and photo editing, some software development for fun, so a tiny machine like this is perfect for his needs because it can sit hidden on the back corner of his desk and just do work.

Watching this video on my Chopin with a 3400G in it, had it 4+ years and great to see it getting some love. Bought the ASRock DeskMini vesa mount to attach it to the back of a monitor and replaced the PSU fan with a Noctua to eliminate some slightly annoying noise. Fitted a Noctua Low profile Cooler for the CPU and it really is a great general work machine that's served me fantastically well

Did a similar build back in January for my mother-in-law, jumping from a i7-2700 to a i5-12400K. Mainly as I has an AsRock Z690M-ITX/ax motherboard ready for a different build (a silent build in a Streacom DB4 which has some very unusual limitations with VRM heatsinks), and her previous computer started having power problems, in that it just wouldn't turn on. The main difference between the Max and Pro versions of the Chopin is that the motherboard tray was moved, sacrificing space for larger 2.5" drives (i.e. 2.5" HDDs over 9.5mm thick) for greater CPU cooler clearance. It's designed to take the stock Intel and AMD coolers, which the Pro can't do. That and the USB 3 Gen 2 socket on the side panel, which was added for the Max. It's a great little case for desktop use, though the cables provided are a bit too long, especially the USB 3.0 header cable

Most system builds I have done in the past 15 years or so rarely included a graphics card. Mainly because of the CPU graphics capabilities on the Intel CPU's. They are way better than the integrated graphics of the 1990's or ever since the "Sandy Bridge" era graphics and forward. Those who want a graphics card I just tell them to get what they want and I'll install it and the drivers for them. Unless they are gaming or doing intensive video work, the on CPU graphics are just fine for most.

Just got done building one and there are two big downsides. First is the Asrock board does not let you dedicate RAM to the GPU. This hinders performance a lot. I have a 7940HS mini-pc that out performs this setup when it should not be. Second issue is AC whine. Didn’t except it from a power brick but it’s atrocious and enough to make me regret building it. I was expecting a small quiet system which it is not.

The 8700G is not good for gaming with how overly expensive it is for what it is, but this is probably one of the only videos I've seen so far where that APU is actually decent and useful for the use case of what his sister needs it for. Don't get me wrong, it's actually pretty Impressive for what it can do for gaming, but for the same price you can get a lower end CPU and GPU that will blow it out of the water. Even if you like smaller systems, you can still build a small system with a discrete GPU. I think the 8700G will definitely heavily fall in price eventually, and maybe then it will actually have a more compelling price to performance for gaming usage.

I built this case with a 7600 in an ASUS B650E-I with 2x32GB CL40 DDR5-5600 - just 2 CU, but the graphics are quite capable for that. The way to go with AM5 is undervolting, both GPU and CPU (ASUS's GFX Curve Optimizer setting doesn't work; use the one in the AMD BIOS menus), while RAM and Infinity Fabric might be better overvolted, a little at least (I used 1.35-1.4V and 1.25V respectively). You need a lot of tweaking and testing with OCCT and y-cruncher Hybrid NTT (FCLK stability) to get the most out. I couldn't get RAM stable at 6000, but BCLK to 102.6 on 5800 Mhz with tweaked timings to get to ~5974Mhz CL34 worked, while keeping the memory controller just shy of the maximum speed that it would change gear ratios if it went higher. I cooled it with NH-L9a-AM5, NA-FD1 duct, and a 140mm iPPC 2000 I found on Overclockers resting atop the mesh. Dissipates ~118W even with the more-concentrated load, had to drop GFX to 2640 to maximise full-core CPU+GPU. It can even render Stable Diffusion on the GPU in ROCm mode! Several seconds per iteration, but still... next upgrade, KryoSheet when the paste dries out.

This is my favourite case and nearly the exact rebuild I have planned this year! Glad it's getting the attention it deserves. Very nice. I am not a big gamer but like to build my own PC's. My comment is, I don't see the utility in building this small. A computer case can fit pretty much anywhere and other than the novelty of building small for small sake which you have, I don't see the benefit as even a MicroATX can fit pretty much anywhere including the floor. But I like your part selection and perfect for your sis. I try to look after the computer needs of my family as well. Thanks for all the years of great PC content.

It's possible to slip this into a bag along with a keyboard and mouse for a week or weekend trip, which isn't really feasible with larger systems. Of course if you do that regularly a laptop is more suitable, but it's not the same at all in terms of expandability. I agree for a more static system microATX is probably a better deal.

What a lovely little build. Paul, please do let us know if Steve from Hardware Unboxed calls you to reprimand you for your choice of CPU (he's not a fan of the 8700G).

I agree with you, you need at least mx4 thermal paste, Alusha is the most modern and new with phase change

@@Riga_Style Or a KryoSheet, if you just want to give it to your sister and leave it a decade.

Nice pc but im looking for a 4-5L ITX Pc build with a RX 7800XT. That would be the ultimate small with full gaming performance. I know there is a 4L Pc with a RTX 4060 but non with a RX 7800XT because its needs triple slot.

But why the Kioxia drive? They are slower, huh? BTW The case looks awesome and easy to use!

you're a kind brother, I love to see a fit for purpose build that achieves solid performance for its application without overspending on flair and powerful hardware that won't see daily use. your sister seems like chill person too :)
