Let's take a close look at the Maxxis Minion DHF versus the Maxxis Assegai. Both of these tires are in EXO+ casing with MAXX TERRA grip compound. Check out the video and let me know what you think, or click the links below if you want to get a set of these MTB tires for yourself. However, it is a bit tricky to find the right Maxxis tire on Amazon in the correct CASING/COMPOUND/SIZE, so I highly recommend going to a local bike shop like Zach's Bikes in Klamath Falls.

Open tread design is generally better for MTB. And its definitely one of the reasons why the minions tread designs are some of the best and that other manufacturers seems to mimic the design. Also interesting when people talk about the minion vagueness/transition zone from centre knobs to side knobs, because it was something that was never really mentioned before the assegai came out and seemed to be a big marketing point for it, then other manufacturers started making assegai copies. I think the vagueness/transition zone of the minions is conflated with 'positive edge bite' like a snow ski. I actually prefer it and its a good feeling when leaning the bike over especially in flat corners and its very trustworthy. I really wanted to like the assegai however it slips on the edge or always feels like its about to slip. There is a few things I believe which contributes to this, its the assegai overal square profile and basically simple physics of weight distrubution. The square design will have less bite when leant over, the more rubber contact/knobs with the ground will distrubute the weight and won't penetrate into the ground as hard, especially in loose and loose over hard with the assegai transition knob which gives the impression of the tyre skipping. The open design of the minions from centre knobs to side knobs when leant over will have all the riders weight onto the side knobs which will penetrate harder.

On my Orbea Wild Emtb I’m running the Assegai on the back and as soon as I finish off my DHF in the front I’m going with the Assegai in the front as well. I managed to tear up the kevlar bead on my DHR II in the back As I run over too many sharp stones and rocks to care for anything less aggressive than the Assegai. The motor gives me all the extra power I need so I don’t worry about rolling resistance. Thank you for the video

How much faster does it wear out compared to the Maxx Terra? I guess that’s a tricky question that depends on terrain.
@86309
@86309 2 года назад
I’ve run both Max Terra and Max Grip up front. It’s not a noticeable thing on wear really. The Max Grip is a durable compound on regular dirt, hardback , mountain soil rocks roots. Maybe more noticeable if your on rough gravel sharp flinty or Moab slick Rick type terrain. But being that it’s up front it doesn’t make to big a difference. Out back Max Grip would be slower and show age quicker for sure. But I run a Aggressor Dual compound out back. The “drift zone” on the DHF in Max Grip is much less noticeable in my opinion relative to the Max Terra. I LOVE this combo for fast rolling, good climbing And braking out back with the Killer DHF Max Grip up front. it works for me on my 160/150

@@bthomas518 It all depends on what type of terrain you're riding with the bike, and the goals you have with it. If you are into fast flow single track, or rocks and chunder loose over hard pack, or if you ride in wet loam type muddy stuff. For me , the MaxxGrip provides great stick to tree roots, doesn't deflect as fast off rocks and thunder(the slower rebounding compound settles the tire down up front) and really helps me feel I can weight the front end more and really lean it over into the side knobs for full engagement. Thats what. the DHF does so well, it rolls decently, but if you can get the bike weighted properly and really get the side knobs engaged it hooks so well ! The Grip Compound just makes that transition better and more confident for me. I always want my front tire to have more grip than my back, ALWAYS. So much of your energy climbing and rolling speed is rear tire weighted because more of your body weight is biased over the rear tire! I like the aggressor as it's fast in the hardpack , climbed well, and brakes decent.(not as good as the DHR) just by design. The Dual compound is a faster rolling better wearing compound inherently than the Max Terra out back. The Dissector has better outright cornering grip than the Aggressor but it doesn't roll as fast (at least in my experience, but it's a good tire, To me it leave a bit on the table when you need strong braking performance. So speed is not just a factor of light tires and light rotating mass. Carcass design , tread shape and design, and compound have a lot to play in the speed dept. You probably will not be lighter than the Recon/ Diss , but your ability to corner (DHF Gripp) and the aggressor out back is more confidence inspiring when pushing hard. - Hope this helps.

Ha Ha, i love it, i've been running the DHR II & DHF for years, recently put the Disector on the rear and is awesome. The DHF i am nervous to change for fear of going backwards, have seen many mixed reviews on the Assegai but not sure. Max Grip, 3C has been my preference, went from 2.4" to 2.6" rear to get a rounder profile to help corner grip, currently a 2.5" DHF, been thinking that maybe a 2.6" Assegai might be ok. 🤔

I'm in northern Utah, about to turn 70 and ride with my 30 year old son, a lot. Because of that, I try to get the fastest rolling tires I can. I'm a believer that the only way to compare rolling efficiency for the climbs is to time the climbs. I went out yesterday and rode the Continental Trail King front and Mountain King rear and felt blisteringly fast! I wasn't. In fact, previously, I'd ridden my 29x2.5 Assegai front and 29x2.5 Dissector rear and recorded a faster time. But, that's on 2500+ foot climbs in the Wasatch. More cross country, with accelerations and decelerations, I'd prefer the lighter Contis. I've ridden the 29x2.6 DHF and loved it, but at that width, on non-bermed, flatter cornering, the side channel is wider, and you will get a vague spot as you roll the tire over. Once you know it's there, it's no big deal, and it drives the side knobs in really well. If you tend to not get the bike over to dig in the side knobs, I think the Assegai is the more confidence inspiring tire up front. For me, in the loose REALLY steep old school stuff - loose dirt, the advantage of the Assegai is mostly in front braking. The knobs dig in crazy hard to control speed. I'm actually thinking of going to the 2.6 Assegai/2.6 Dissector combo, as I think I like the comfort associated with the slightly higher volume. I have hundreds of miles in Moab on EXO (both 2.6 DHF and 2.5 Assegai) at 170 pounds with gear without cushcore at lower pressures and they're plenty beefy enough for me. But I don't get big air in bike parks, so maybe you need the increased support there.

I found that the Assegai has better all around grip especially on hard corners. It does not seem to have that, "No mans land shimmy" when hitting the transfer from the center to side knobs that the DHF does. Also on wet-slick rocks and rooty terrain it has MUCH MORE more stability due to greater bite area. Like you mentioned IT DOES ROLL SLOWER! I also actually liked the DHR2 as a front tire better than the minion DHF. I currently run the 2.5 Assegai 27.5 EXO 3c up front, and an 2.4 Aggressor 27.5 EXO 3c in the rear my main bike. 23.5psi-24.5 psi depending on day and terrain. 24.5-25 rear no matter what conditions or terrain. And the DHF 2.5 EXO 3c and same Aggressor on the rear of my secondary bike. Both are full squish. Ridden both bikes at Moore a few times and prefer the Assegai over the DHF or DHR2 on the front. For the back end I love the Aggressor in the rear. Great traction, cornering and braking with that tire.

@@JaredHoff Great video as always brother. I agree with the other comment here, I'm running a DHR II up front and I think it's great! Something in between the Assegai and DHF. That is, it has excellent grip and cornering but is a tad faster rolling than the Assegai, and a tad slower than the DHF. I think I will stay with that up front for a while, the Assegai is a bit too hard to pedal and climb for me. Only thing is I wish they made the DHR in 2.5, right now I have 2.6 which is fine but 2.5 would rock. I have a DHF out back just to see how it is. I thought it might be more grippy for climbing while still being fast, but it feels more draggy than fast. I might go back to Aggressor in the rear. The DHF out back is fishtailing a bit on some trails and off-camber sections. DHF in front is a bit too tenuous for me, feels a bit like riding on ice, though it is super fast. I'm thinking DHR front and Aggressor rear might be good for the spring/summer for me here in SoCal. DHF is fast but I'd rather charge confidently with more grip rather than feel like I'm skating with the DHF. Happy riding and thanks for the info, valuable stuff right now while stock is limited still in parts!

@mtbjoser 2 года назад
@@JaredHoff Welcome! Absolutely, loose is pretty much the default out here, except in the rare event it rains lol. I think as my riding gets more aggressive and I'm pushing harder, I feel like grip and confidence allows me to go faster because I feel safer and more planted, i.e., not relying on the rolling speed of the tire so much. If that makes sense haha. Also I found the Assegai can gain a tad bit more rolling speed with higher PSI (I guess this is true for all tires).

The one you ride on the rear was on my last bike front and back but I bought a new bike 6 months ago a Trek Rail and thought i would wait until i wore out the stock Bontrager tires but after a corner a few weeks ago the front tire wash out on familiar trails. I was going to put the Assegai up front and DHR2 in the rear. They had no stock on DHR2 so going with 2 Assegai, EXo+ and terra. I’m sure it will be tons better than the stock tires. I ride in Georgia mostly hilly, hard packed very rooty with some rocks. When it’s wet the roots are the big issues. Now crashes happen when one MTB but confidence in your tires is a big one. I have little in these stock Bontrager tires but love the Trek bike.

Feels like the front end wants to give out at times when cornering. Should I try the Assesgai? And in what size (2.50 or 2.60 front)? The bike obviously had the Bontrager 2.60 on the front when I got it and the bike felt more in control but the Bontrager was still a little too bulky I found. Anyways sorry for the long rant. Thanks again! 😎🤙🏻

Definitely get the Assegai for that max grip feeling up front. As far as size goes,,, I usually ride a 2.5 front and 2.4 rear width tire. I ride 3C MaxxTerra compound, but a lot of people say they like the MAXXGRIP so that’s another way to add more grip. However, max grip will wear out a little faster. But it’s so hard to find the exact tire size, casing, compound… So I’ve been riding the 2.6” width I’m riding, but will probably go back to a 2.5” if it’s available next time.
