Ti West’s MaXXXine is the third instalment of a career-defining trilogy for the director and his star, Mia Goth. The actress received some of the best notices of her career for the last film in the series, Pearl, and her double role in X made her a genre icon. MaXXXine is a star vehicle for her through and through, but while she delivers a good performance again, the film can’t help but pale compared to its somewhat scrappier predecessor

This film let me down. Huge fan of Mia Goth and I LOVED Pearl and really liked X. This story was a mess. Great cast, visually great, killer soundtrack but a sloppy story and the 3rd act goes off the rails..still entertainined by Goth but such a let down overall

The killer was nowhere near as compelling as Pearl was. Pearl and her husband being the replaced as villians was a major roadblock that the filmmakers would have to fix if they were going to do a third film. I really think this shouldn't have been a trilogy.

I gotta say that i agree, she is a very talented and compelling actress, she definitely has some traits of past scream queens, time will tell if she does achieve that status though. I am rooting for her, and will keep on doing so. Hope you enjoy Maxxxine, though, truly

@@Model_Roe X is a remarkable movie, enjoyed every second of it. Pearl is more of psychological slow-burn, Mia Goth's acting is what made it stick in my mind as more than averagely fun, for my taste. Don't skip X before watching Maxxxine, but feel free to pass on Pearl if you wish, watch it only if you are totally entranced by Mia Goth and if you genuinely loved watching the movie Maxxxine. That's my suggestion to you, as a fan of the trilogy.

What I love about Pearl is that because of X I was expecting a slasher but I instead got a psychological drama and character study, and the film is probably one of the greatest in the horror genre because of those focuses. So MaxXxine being less horror focused isn't necessarily a red flag yet. Still excited

What usually happens is IF an actress has a career defining horror role, she leaves to explore other roles, to be taken more seriously, avoid typecasting, etc and will return to horror later (aka old for Hollywood) for a last thank you to the genre

I would also add Phantasm 2 and Return of the Living Dead to that list. There are a lot of movies that a lot of people swear are great Horror movies which I think are mediocre at best. Insidious and anything from Blumhouse come to mind. I did like Cobweb though.

@@anderlucifer X is a little bit hilarious in its way, and offers some terrifying scenes because the entire filming team had no idea on the killer couple. Pearl is more focused on its main character but such frustrating and devastating story from start to end with no hope

I saw the movie tonight. I was highly anticipating this movie since the first preview. I kinda didnt like a few things about the movie , but I did love Mia Goth. So I gave it a 5/10. I think everyone should see it and judge for themselves . I did predict the big reveal about two weeks ago, lol. One of my friends told me I was really reaching for that to be the plot, and it WAS the plot, lol.

Excellent movie. Not one you should rent with your mom when you're 12 years old. Melanie Griffith's dialogue alone was enough to make me cringe and pretend I was tired so I could avoid any further awkwardness with my mom...i know she felt the same! Also, Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax is incorporated!

As a huge fan of this revamp and Mia Goth, I feel like we are getting the antithesis of Pearl, someone who didn't give up and was given the chance to be a star and was willing to do what it took to become one, but I left the movie just wondering, did this really add anything to the overall franchise. Maybe Pearl was so strong that I found myself underwhelmed, maybe I'm missing a certain commentary on life, but I found the inclusion of the Night Stalker a bit...boring. Either way 9/10 and Mia Goth is definitely final girl material.

I loved it. It was intentionally 80's. Over the top 80's coke fueled Regan era craziness. Blunt while throwing so many on the nose ideas that coke out movie producers would do in the 80's. Its also intalin horror inspired so a fun murder mystery. This triology is amazing. No universal favorite anf the movies are so different. Maxxine is maybe the most rewatchable. I think pearl is best acted and X is overall best film. They all have goofy unique shock moments based on inspiration. I'm not sure why some reviewers are missing the point of the bluntness or brothered by it.

None of these were scary, but they are great character driven films. This was a good sequel that didn’t need to rely on the creepfest that was X, because the character was established and we cared about her story.

I gave this movie a 6/10. Mainly for the style. Theres plenty of blood, gore and death but absolutely no tension. I had many in my audience giggling at times and a few walked out. The last act felt rushed and completely different from the first half. Goth, Esposito and Bacon were fun to watch and the LA 80s vibe was actually cool (compared to alot of obnoxious over exaggerated examples these past 5 years). And spoiler below I really wish they did a historical reimagining and actually involved the night stalker in this movie. Instead all we get is news paranoia and its obvious the night stalker wasnt the one behind any of the kills here. So it feels like why was his mention even in the movie?

It was going so well until the third act, as my peers describe before me, it was a huge let down, the final reveal was not strong enough. It sucks when a film starts on a high note only to take it back in the end. 😢

I only had two complaints: 1. I feel like this movie lost it’s connection with X and Pearl; Besides some flashbacks, I wish Pearl and the events of X played a bigger role than it did in Maxxxine. 2. I just wanted a more explosive ending; A gun fight pales in comparison to Pearl’s murders in both X and her own film

Was good but definitely not great. Mia Goth carried the entire movie when she shouldn't have. Too many underutilized characters who needed more scenes and involvement. A lot of loose portions that needed to be better fleshed out, like Maxine just strolling around the set on her "first day" and just felt like she needed to do more. Her making of the film Puritan 2 needed to be better fleshed out, and even the Night Stalker element needed WAY more.

I recently saw PEARL after loving X.... Damn what a let down. I know the style he was going for but I was expecting an explanation of how her and her husband started killing people. It ended very suddenly too..... I was like that's it? It's like PEARL only had an outline of a plot. It was mostly just pretty visuals and a throwback aestethic. I love horror but there was nothing to it besides her being cruel.

I feel like I'm the only person on earth who didn't like the first two movies at all. I've seen both X and Pearl twice now and both instances I just never felt engaged. I love horror movies and I've been a big fan of what A24 has released in the past. I remember being so confused that X was the movie everyone was raving about after I saw it for the first time.

Art films aren't entirely about the standard engagement you find with other works. There's a lot going on in the movie X with its themes and throwbacks even down to filming styles reminiscent of the time it attempted to recreate. X was much more than another random horror movie, it had love patience and effort beyond most modern releases. But that requires you to look at the movie beyond surface level, a24 films aren't to be watched like other movies it's to be watched knowing that it's to be watched as other movies and intentionally misdirects you. There's a lot going on that many horror fans won't get if all ya like is the simple surface stuff.
