There are a lot of people in Germany who think that the “Nationale Volksarmee- NVA” (National People’s Army), the army of communist East Germany, would have been able to wipe the floor with their West German opponent, the “Bundeswehr”, but I disagree. I met a lot of former NVA soldiers and officers after the reunification of Germany, served with a few of them together, and when you talk from professional to professional, the picture is very different. The East German Army did a lot of things better than most NATO armies did. As their country was a dictatorship, the military didn’t have to care about public opinion or human rights and could practically do whatever they wanted: -High readiness levels. An NVA armored battalion was able to get ready for combat and move to the front line in a few hours. The Bundeswehr, on the other hand, needed 24 to 48 hours to get combat ready. -Well trained personnel. Soldiers were extremely well trained and prepared. Compulsory military service in the NVA lasted much longer than in the Bundeswehr and this meant more time for training. -Better Special Operations Forces. During the Cold War, the Bundeswehr didn’t have any Special Forces. The military planners thought that our paratroopers were good enough for all kinds of missions. The NVA, on the other hand, had a lot of Special Ops, not only in the Army and Navy but also within the State Security. A long time after the Cold War had ended, I spoke with a guy who was a member of a State Security paramilitary sabotage unit. These guys regularly went to Western Europe to reconnoiter German and NATO military installations. In the event of armed conflict, they would have caused us a lot of problems. -Discipline. The NVA was highly disciplined. An order wasn’t supposed to be discussed as it sometimes happened in the Bundeswehr. In combat, this is a big plus. -Perfect maintenance. All their equipment was ready to use all the time. This might look impressive but like many other Eastern European militaries, the NVA also had a lot of problems: -Obsolete and inferior material. Although perfectly working, most Eastern German weapons were Soviet-made and technologically inferior to NATO systems. The NVA had only limited night fighting capability and their tanks (mostly T-55 and T-72) weren’t a match for the Bundeswehr's Leopards or the American M-1 Abrams. -Dependance on the Soviet Union. The GDR (German Democratic Republic) was a satellite state under the rule of the Soviet Union. This was also true for their military. Therefore, in combat, the NVA could only be as good as their military strategists who weren’t Germans. -Politicized leadership. What impressed me most when I spoke with former NVA soldiers, was how much they hated and despised their officers. In the Bundeswehr, you usually respect your commander, as long as he isn't a total jerk, but not so in the NVA: to become an officer there, you had to be a good communist first. Military capabilities only came second. Of course, this resulted in a highly indoctrinated and less capable officer corps. -Incompetence. Unlike the Bundeswehr, the NVA wasn't built up with the help of former Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS officers. A former “Nazi” officer becoming an NVA General would have been unthinkable. The few higher ranking Wehrmacht officers in the NVA were mostly people that have been “turned around” during their time as POWs in the Soviet Union. Other high ranking staff had been fighting for the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. They were good communists, but terrible soldiers. In the Bundeswehr, on the other hand, it wasn’t unusual to see the bearer of a Knight’s Cross or a Panzer Ace. The Bundeswehr profited from those experts, while the NVA couldn’t. -Lack of motivation. To have discipline is good, but it isn’t enough. Eastern German conscripts weren’t really willing to fight for their country. In most parts of Eastern Germany, the population was able to receive a Western TV signal and therefore, they knew exactly what was going on. I remember that many Western TV hosts sent special greetings to their viewers in Eastern Germany because they knew how popular their shows were there. When the Eastern German government crumbled, they made a last ditch effort to control the situation and gave an order to their most loyal army units to suppress the massive popular uprising. However, instead of obeying the orders of their superiors, these units decided to revolt themselves. Despite all the propaganda and discipline, the NVA probably wouldn’t have been able to continue fighting for a long time against their Western German brothers.
