Congrats on all the new subscribers! I did, indeed, find you through the "hard books" video and was SHOCKED to see that you didn't even have 4000 subscribers at that time. You're doing GREAT work and you deserve a thousand times more. Fingers crossed that RU-vid sorcery will get their eyes on you soon. I'm just happy I'm here to see what you have in store next!

You should definitely do a video listing books that have caused P.E.B.S - that would be awesome 🤗

Ok Ok,...lots of thoughts here!! First: Congratulations on the channel growth!! You deserve it!!! Its a testament to all the hard work you have been putting into it!! (The cult grows hahaha) Second: I also started to read Dark matter, and while I am enjoying it so far especially the prose, I also had some stuff going on so I got distracted....To see House of leaves leave the list of best books of 2024 is a bit surprising, especially considering your high praise of Lonesome Dove!! Really surprised me with that one, did not expect that! I have never read a western before and seeing your praise of it, and how many people brought up Red Dead Redemption, I have no choice to make this a priority read now!! Btw I also bought House of Leaves, its on its way to me but I will make sure to watch your video after I finish the book!!

I totally agree with you about Dark Matter. My issue with Blake Crouch is his dialog - It's not good. I finished Lonesome Dove over the weekend & was blown away! I found myself chuckling out loud at Gus. Definitely a surprisingly wonderful read.

Great Wrap-Up! Despite being a horror reader, Lonesome Dove is most definitely on my tbr. I have heard so many wonderful reviews on this novel. I love Neil Gaiman and will read anything by the author. That is a great top ten! Congrats on the growth!

I think I read once McMurtry considered Lonesome Dove to be more like the Divine Comedy, while the readers saw it as Gone With the Wind.

I read Lonesome Dove in June of last year, read the sequel Streets Of Laredo that December and finished reading the first prequel Deadman's Walk a week or so ago...trying to hold off on reading Comanche Moon till at least the end of this month, Larry McMurtry is just such a great writer that I will be checking out all his other stuff eventually.

Glad to see so many new subs, welcome y’all! I can relate with how much stuff has been going on in may that I only read 3 books. Rage by Stephen King (not worth the hunt for it at all), The Kindness by John Ajvide Lindqvist (I finally got around to it and read it, it was worth it) and The Thief of Always by Clive Barker (really nice little book). Great video as always! :)

Great vid as always. You and Lonesome Dove need to get a room. 😂 Really going to show my age now, but I remember watching the Lonesome Dove TV miniseries when it came out. Dark Matter’s been bothering my TBR for a couple of months and nearly made the cut for June, it might just start to slide a wee bit further down.

I don’t know why but house of leaves intimidates me. I want to pick up that book so bad but I’m terrified.😮 not because I think it’s gonna be scary or anything because people talk about how difficult it is to read
@PaperbackJourneys
@PaperbackJourneys Месяц назад
Yeah it is difficult to read. The reason being that there's multiple plots all happening simultaneously and half of the book is footnotes. HOWEVER! It's not quite as difficult as it sounds. It's complicated, rather than hard if that makes sense? You'll be flipping back and forth through the pages but the actual story is easy to follow.

Just realised I'm liking your videos before watching them. That's a good thing right? Performance related pay was so last year anyway 😂😂 serious question for you: Andy Weir's PHM is the only sci-fi book I've read in the last 12 months and whilst the story was good, we both agreed the physics was 🤯 so what about the Three Body Problem? Easy to read for someone getting back into the Sci-Fi genre?

@@PaperbackJourneys I'd be fascinated to see you also keep a running list of your top... 20, maybe??... Stephen King books. I'm honestly amazed that you put Pet Sematary above Misery (and I'm saving your individual SK reviews for little treats when I find time to re-read the books), so I'm deeply curious about which of his books appeal to you the most, and why. To be clear, there are no wrong answers here! To each his own and all that jazz! I'm just curious, that's all. 🙂

@@PaperbackJourneys A few years back I was reading a review of a miniseries that described it as taking place at the turn of the century, and I was very confused when watched it later, expecting it to take place about 100 years earlier.

I don’t understand the love for Lonesome Dove. It’s fine but it seems to be in everyone’s top 5….no. 😁. I’m even a character first reader too. But there might have been 1 or 2 characters in the whole story that I liked. There were opportunities to give you a little more action than was given. Then there is this whole side story with the sheriff and his b*tch wife that did nothing for me at all. Stupid sheriff chasing his crazy wife around who clearly wants nothing to do with him. And all the cowboys on the other side fawning constantly over a prostitute…meh, ok…anyway. Fantastic writing, a couple solid characters but a mediocre story and some annoying plot lines and characters.
@PaperbackJourneys
@PaperbackJourneys Месяц назад
For me, the authenticity of the characters really stood out. You’re right that there wasn’t a lot of action initially-the first half of the book focused on introducing the characters. However, when the action did arrive, it was sudden and violent, making it feel much more impactful. The balance between action and reflection seemed true to life. I agree that July Johnson was an unusual character, chasing after a wife who wasn’t interested in him. He had a strange tendency to desire women who neither respected nor wanted him, and this trait persisted throughout the story. I don’t think it was unusual for all the men to be attracted to Lorena and falling in love with her. She’s described as one of the most beautiful women they’ve ever seen, and in a world dominated by cattle and rugged men, she stands out like a beacon. Plus they're all red blooded and starved of any affection. Thanks for the comment mate.
@PreppinShootinLivin
@PreppinShootinLivin Месяц назад
@@PaperbackJourneys In regards, to July Johnson and Lorena....I understand the why's...mostly...but it wasn't top 5 book of all time worthy to read about. The July Johnson stuff was worse than the Lorena stuff...but neither are worthy of praise when talking about the book and it being "fantastic"...and they both lasted for the majority of the book. But this, as we say, is art and it's very subjective...i'm just surprised by how many people elevate the book as high as they do. : ) Keep knocking out the good vids!
