In June 2019, the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation decided to close down Maya Bay to allow it time to recover from the relentless pressure from more than 2500 tourists every day.
Maya Bay became a a must-go tourist destination after featuring in the block buster movie "The Beach" featuring Leonardo di Caprio in 2000.
Since it's closure the world's largest coral restoration program has been launched by Ocean Quest in partnership with the Dept of National Parks and Reef Guardians Thailand. Trained volunteers have been working alongside rangers and DNP staff to plant corals. Life is bouncing back at a rapid rate. Sea urchins, sea cucumbers, anemones and their resident clown fish, butterfly fish, angel fish, parrot fish, rabbit fish, rainbow wrasse, king fish, barracuda and even eagle rays have been spotted in the bay. However one species has stolen the show, more than 100 black tip reef sharks have moved back into the bay, making it a shark nurse

Tourists disrespected Maya Bay. People need rules otherwise they abuse. Nature is so fragile and we need to protect it. Maya Bay forever ❤️❤️❤️
