Legendary and beautiful!!! Maya Plisetskaya is a real inspiration, a real legend that will forever live in the ballet world and forever in our hearts. Love and RIP dear Maya. ❤
I first saw this clip when I was a teenager. I used to keep the tv turned to the arts channel at night whenever I was getting ready for bed. It viewed a lot of scriptures set to music. In addition, it showed a lot of clips of dancers and musicians. One night I happened to awake from sleep and this came on. I sat there and watched the most beautiful ballet interpretation I had ever seen. It brought me to tears. She really looked as though she were a dying swan. Though I had taken ballet, I was never really any good at it but I always wanted to be and seeing her intensified my lifelong love of it. I did not know who she was then but I made it a point to remember her name. It has been close to two decades and I still remember. It encouraged me to continue dancing, though not so much these days. Thank you Maya and may you rest in peace.
When she danced this performance she was already nearly crippled by the arthritis that forces her to walk with a cane sometimes. In Sevilla, she lives in Spain most of the time to avoid the Russian climate I saw her outside a tapas bar with a group of friends not too long ago. She can hardly turn her neck.
Yes, Maya was uniquely marvellous - the best of the three interpretations I have just seen, though Makarova did an equally eloquent interpretation. Pavlova seems to want to flutter out of the burden of life, Maya has some of the burden in her interpretation but she lifts it into divinity - hard to find the right words. We should remember that Pavlova's students said none of the film clips of her give any idea of how she really appeared. Frederick Ashton said she was the most striking figure on the stage he had ever seen. Maya is certainly one of these. I like the story of a dancer who worked with German modern dance. who went to see Pavlova and brought a whistle with her to protest against classical ballet. As soon as Pavlova appeared as the Swan, she forgot her whistle and was absolutely stunned and enraptured. Pavlova has gone forever but of Plisetskaya we still have good videos.

In her autobiography she said that she danced her last "Swan" in 1996 on Red Square. I wonder if this recording is from 1996 because in the description you see 1992...
