First time I tried the mayflower curry sauce was after I watched your left over turkey curry, and thank goodness I did because my family all love that curry sauce just like when we have a Chinese takeaway sauce , but now I can make it whenever whenever we want and so much cheaper, love watching your channel
McDonnells brand aside, I'm loving the fact that there is hardly any sugar content in these sauces. As a type1 diabetic, this is music to my ears, because unless I'm mistaken, years ago Mayflower's curry sauce used to be loaded with sugar therefore I tended to stay away from it. But I'll be stocking up now. The Bisto one's are far too expensive and before you even tasted it I knew it wouldn't be up to much. Great review as always mate 👍
The value proposition of the powders and the paste is even better than stated because the Bisto one is already a sauce. The others get made into sauces so make significantly more volume when mixed with water. Must admit, I’m partial to the Mayflower, but my go-to curry sauce is the Bachelors fruity curry mix with pieces of apple. It’s quite speedy but gets used in a lot of chippies, certainly one or two near me use it. Lathered over chips it’s hard to beat, in my opinion of course!
Really great video Gareth and wonderfully bright too! I’ve had the Mayflower extra hot curry sauce also and it is really good. Tesco have a little section dedicated to Irish food which I discovered passing by. They have amongst other things, Cadbury’s Gold Crisp chocolate, Cadbury’s Mint Crisp chocolate, Tiffin, a kind of round fruit bread/cake which is delicious, Kimberley biscuits and other things. When I was small (in the 60’s) my gran (from Donegal) used to send parcels to us near Christmas full of goodies. The one thing I am missing is Galtee cheese though. Keep up your excellent work pal. All the best to you and yours.
Mayflower 'Extra Hot' is absolutely my go to (medium version not as good). Goldfish has been going for years and is a close second for me. A lot of restaurants use Goldfish so its the one to compare to. Both are excellent curry sauces and are like a tradditional chinese curry takeway.
I picked up a box of Mayflower extra hot curry sauce based on your review here. For years I've been trying to either find or make my own Chinese curry sauce that matches the delightful one I used to buy on chips at my local Chinese fish and chip shop, without success. This is the one!! It tastes exactly the same!! Thank you. My hunt is over! 😁
I’m in Canada, here I (and most people I know) use Japanese curry blocks. I’ve never seen a Chinese curry here. The Chinese take away food is actually very different to what’s available in the UK. There are 2 main Japanese curry brands - ‘S&B’ and ‘Glico Curry’. I prefer S&B myself, but even though I buy hot & spicy, I still find both brands extremely mild. I managed to buy some McDonnell’s from a British store recently, so looking forward to trying it. We are going to the UK in May, and Mayflower will be on my list to try.
One of my favourite Chinese dish is the curry. I’ve had Mayflower and really liked it but the Goldfish had the edge for me. I cut into 4 and use a 1/4 to make Chinese curry for myself and hubs. I haven’t tried the Mayflower extra hot so think I’ll give that a whirl next. Great videos, keep them coming ❣️
Good review as always. I find Mayflower hard to beat, though it lumps easily, so I usually mash the dry powder with a fork before adding it to water. Goldfish is an honourable runner up in my book, the first tub I bought tasted a bit 'ordinary' for want of a better word, until I added a 1/3 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the mix near the end of stirring, which gave it a bit of kick.
Hey Gareth. Nice of you to have taste tested Mc Donnells curry sce. You should seriously try it with your Chicken or Beef Curries. But it's mighty over Chips. I'm in Hospitality Management and I'm always amazed when UK tourists try our Curry and they says it's great tasting Curry. Our Curry Sauce is Mc Donnells. And I'm sure most other big hotels in Ireland use it....but glad to see it tickled your taste buds. Again well done.
The McDonnells is a firm favourite in Ireland. I love it and the mayflower ones but for different things. The mayflower I find is best for chinese/Asian stirfry type dishes (tip I always add in a teasp of Chinese 5 spice powder to strir fries I usually marinade the meat or chicken in it with oil, 🌶🧄 and ginger). The McDonnells I find is more suited to "chip shop' type stuff eg curry chips or as a dip for onion rings etc its yummy 😋.
I tried that Goldfish sauce after watching your prawn curry video and was very happy with it. The wife loves Chinese curry sauce and was also delighted with it. I will try the Mayflower one when we can find it and make sure not to buy the Bisto one! Thanks for another great video. If you really like spicey food, buy the extra hot chilli powder, brand doesn't really matter, you can use it sparingly until you find your limit. Just be careful not to go overboard the first time!
I saw your earlier video on the Mayflower, but Iceland is in the middle of our town and we tend to avoid it. So when I was in Tesco I saw the Goldfish and tried it. Superb as far as my wife and I are concerned. I'm not bother about the lack of heat and she doesn't like anything spicy hot anyway. If you're careful you will get 8 portions out of it and good sized one too, but I'm a pig when it come to Chinese curries so we only got 6 out of ours. Add some onions cut into big pieces and fried well in a wok - HEAVEN!
I've got Goldfish from Tesco and Mayflower that I had sent to me, as it's difficult for me to get at the minute without paying a fortune via Amazon. Overall, I think I prefer the Mayflower even though over the last few years it has seemed to go a bit more gravy-like to me at times. With that being said, the Goldfish is handy to have in given it usually has a good long date on it.
Gareth . I love how you made them right. You just add and stir until it looks right. Like instant gravy. Never do what the instructions say. With Goldfish you have to load it until it is quite dark brown. Paste bit of water. Paste bit of water lol. then the heat comes alive. Great Vlog. Keep 'em coming.👍
Cheers for another spot on review, Mayflower curry sauce is lovely! Gareth, try adding a good pinch to Aldi Corale baked beans before you heat them up for belting Bombay beans 👍
I use the Goldfish and have done for years. I always have two or three tubs in, I add it to curries I make also I haven't tried the Mayflower, but I tried their Southern Style gravy last week, and loved it, so I suspect their Curry sauce is equally as good.
Mayflower, as a matter of fact? we're having it tonight (The boil in the bag / Frozen curry is amazing) The powder, I often use during making a curry by sprinkling over whatever meat or veg I put in the frying pan before cooking in the slow cooker. it's one hell of a sauce / powder.
Hi love your vlogs just subscribed im British lived in canada for over 44 years now in the states so i love watching anything british reminds me of home lol lol we have british stores here in Canada and America i go but they are so i expensive but you always need that treat when my girlfriend comes from england he brings w loads of goodies lol im spoiled that way lol ill go back on some of your vlogs and watch them. Thank you for sharing from dallas texas
My go to curry sauce is a brand called S&B Golden Curry, they have different 'heat' versions, I usually go for S&B Golden Curry Medium Hot. If you have a Chinese or Korean supermarket nearby, they will most likely stock it.
Great review Gaz as always a tip once you find the one you like best add some extra spice off your choosing which makes a nice addition to your favourite one Mmmmm👏👏👍👍
I've seen the Bisto curry sauce pots in our local supermarket, knew they would be no good just by looking at them, glad I didn't bother trying. Thanks for the review Gareth, I'll look online for the other ones you tried, may just get one from off there.
We buy Goldfish by the 8 kg bucket. It comes as a paste. It’s used in 80% of British Chinese chippies. We use it in combination with Maysan curry block.
@@tonysmith5812 a lad in work sold me a bucket a few years ago. You can buy the bucket on Amazon. We like curries, but my wife tends to give some of it away to family and friends.
8kg bucket sounds like quite a lot of curry sauce. I hope you're not addicted to the MSG, and that you're just eating it and haven't yet reached the bathing in it stage.
Those are great sauces for the old chips (Bisto not included)! Lidls used to do another irish one which was so fruity and tangy but I haven't spotted it in ages. So I am going to go investigate the McDonnells one.
For chinese chicken curry i always use a brand called Maysan, produced near Newcastle upon Tyne, with a dollop of garlic paste and a generous sprinkling of salt and pepper and largely chopped onions and mushrooms you just cant beat it
I worked in a couple of Chippies in the distant past, they tended to use either Dinaclass or Middleton Foods Curry sauces (come with or without sultanas). However, I don't know if you can buy smaller tubs than the catering sized 2.5- 10Kg tubs, that we used to get. I believe that Goldfish paste is also often used in Chinese Takeaways for that "Chinese" style curry sauce.
I have been buying the Bisto "chip shop curry sauce" granules. It comes in similar packaging as their gravy granules. I like it and I regularly make some up for my chips. I think you would like the granules more than those pot ones. 👩🍳👩🍳
Family member moving house, stored some things here and we got some tinned food, years ago. Bisto curry was there and i'd never seen it before. I've looked for it in every shop and supermarket I've been in ever since and never found any, just regular bisto.
@@wullaballoo2642 Bisto chip shop curry is apparently sold in ASDA, Tesco and Morrison's. I usually get mine from ASDA and I think I get it from the sauce section if not it must be the gravy granule section. 👍
Fabulous. Very interesting. Only mayflower I have had and I really rate it. To be honest,if you like something it’s the one but if you like trying new and your on a quest to find better, this is an excellent video for you to watch as a starting point and have inspiration 👌🙌👌🔥👏🏻
Yes the mayflower sauce is really good. They do a milder one than the one you showed but they're both brilliant. I part cook a load of veg then put them in a big pan, add peppers, courgettes, onions, peas, mushrooms and then simmer in the mayflower sauce for an hour. I then turn it off and let it stand until cool. The longer it stands the better. I eat it as it is as I'm a vegan but I add meat for the missus. We then freeze any that's left. Not many supermarkets sell this sauce now but you can usually find it in Farm Foods, B and M and some smaller shops. Great vid mate.
I love the Mayflower in Extra Hot & medium varieties, the Goldfish is very nice too. I recently tried the Bisto curry sauce in granule form with chips, battered veggie sausage from Aldi and tinned mushy peas and was fairly impressed. I've never seen the McDonnell's one.
@@BaldFoodieGuy No problem. The think you should try the Bisto curry granules so you can get the thickness how you like it. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
Family member moving house, stored some things here and we got some tinned food, years ago. Bisto curry granules was there and i'd never seen it before. You had to mix it quite thick to get a good flavour. I've looked for it in every shop and supermarket I've been in ever since and never found any, just regular bisto
A taste comparison of these was long overdue so thanks again Gareth. The Goldfish looks similar in raw consistency to another brand called "Maysan" which is a popular buy in Chinese supermarkets-it's quite cheap too. I'm not surprised that you found the Bisto to be unpalatable, the big brands should stick to what they're good at and leave the specialist tastes to the independents.
I just started trying curries and found McDonnell's in the International section at my grocery store, so it's funny that I found this video while looking for comparisons and it's only a couple of weeks old. I'll have to try Mayflower and skip Bisto (which is what Amazon has been recommending since it saw I was looking at McDonnell's in larger quantities) since it seemed to cause deep emotional curry pain.
Mayflower was the one I always used its lovely. You need to try Maysan which is used in a lot of Chinese chippies\Takeaways-Its out of this world[Its a paste] mix with cold water ..Yum.
Bisto is a very expensive brand in my view. I was in the supermarket the other day and Bisto gravy a staggering £3.25 but there was a cheaper alternative, same size, and that was only 89p. Bought it, tried it and it's good gravy. Thanks for this review. Always interesting, Gareth. Cheers!!
I have used the goldflsh brand for years now it's the nearest taste to a chinese , they also do japenes curry and a thai sauce like them all easy to prepare.
I had the bisto curry sauce at work over micro chips the lot went in the bin worst thing I have had the misfortune of eating the rest of the curry sauces can't be beat good review mate
Mayflower is lovely. My butcher sells the Goldfish and I like that. These two are made for chips and anyone can make a nice curry from these. I like to cook off some red onions and mushrooms in garlic butter, then add Oakham boneless skinless chicken thighs. I put in a glass or three of red wine then add the curry mix and some chili paste. It’s cracking.
Great review again. I have tried the Goldfish brand and it it is very good but needs but of salt pepper and sugar adding to boost it. Also there is a bit too much star anise flavour that lingers on taste buds for too long. Now i will try Mayflower brand and not bother with the other 2
Am a fan of the Mayflower range. I always have a couple of the Chinese Style Curry Sauce packets in the freezer (69p) for emergencies. I do get some of the Skinny Food Co diabetic friendly squeezy sauces when they appear in B&M for £1.99 Also found that they do a nice granule in the Asda own range for around £1, but sell out really fast.
Goldfish from Asda for me with extra chilli, a colleague who had a Chinese restaurant told me to get it. We use 80g with 300g of hot water for a two person portion and it keeps foreverin the fridge. So that's 10 single portions per pot.
Something so simple, but now so British. I first saw and bought the Mayflower and Goldfish from the Chinese shops in Liverpool, and I like both of them. It's great that even local supermarkets sell them, and it shows you what a rip-off Bisto and other producers were making of the shoppers. A great video.
I enjoyed that I’ve loads of different curry sauce mixes in my cupboard I’ve the goldfish one but I enjoy the mayflower like you .I would like to see a coffee pod review
ive first seen the goldfish brand sitting on a shelf at the back of my local chinese carry out twenty odd years ago then i seen it more and more all over scotland in chinese resturants and takeaways also seen goldfish madras curry paste aswell in chinese takeawasy and aparently some have there own recipies and use the madras paste to make there own chinese curry
When I was Shopfitting I worked in 100s of Towns and City's When we went out and after beers , I would get Chicken omlette and curry sauce from the local Chinese's , so same as you buddy I know what I like .
mayflower is my favourite great value for money. When I get Chinese takeaway instead of shelling out £1.60 to £2.50 for curry sauce I just make my own with Mayflower . Another great video Gareth.
