OMG!!!! (From the U.S.,) you almost gave me a heart attack in the beginning, lol. Especially when it looked like your reel was bird-nesting, holy crap! Cool fight, though, brother, I enjoyed the doscumenting of it immensley.

95% of salmon hooked in Newfoundland are hooked using 9’ rods and 8-12 lb leaders.
@captainflint89

yes , these are american fish that are all on a one way trip and are mostly killed for food by the american angler. The majority of our rivers are catch and release only and our uk and irish atlantic salmon often survive spawning if they are fit enough and can run and spawn again , such fish are very valuable genetically to our endangered salmon stocks . i understand that it is a very american idea of sport to catch large salmon on light leader and 7-9 foot 4 wt rods but in the uk and ireland the sporting gentleman does well to get his salmon in and released as quickly as possible to hopefully maintain the fishes chances of surviving to spawn or perhaps even return to sea to spawn next year .this means fishing with suitable strong tackle as there is nothing sporting about fighting a 15lbs/20lbs hen fish to total exhaustion using tackle designed for small trout , especially nearer the end of the season
@steviewalk
@steviewalk 4 месяца назад
@@captainflint89 Check your geography. Who said anything about “American”? And we Newfoundlanders play and release our fish just as quickly as any of the 15+ foot rod guys I see fishing in the UK.

@@captainflint89 There’s a lot more than “American anglers” on the North American continent. And Newfoundland lies east of that continent. Never mind. Enjoy yourself.

@@steviewalk newfoundland is part of the north landmass called north america , being an island is irrelevant , "Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easterly province in Canada, situated in the northeastern region of North America. [13] The Strait of Belle Isle separates the province into two geographical parts: Labrador, connected to mainland Canada, and Newfoundland, an island in the Atlantic Ocean. [14]" and what does it matter who fishes where ? you canadians and united staters and everyone else who lives in north america are still north americans , argue all you like you convince me of nothing but your american fragility

Epic catch man really enjoyed watching this,i bought a Remington field kit for salmon last year,im also hoping to catch my first salmon on the fly some time.Did you set drag on that reel for that fight,what type of a leader did you use on that rod,you looked like you were beat with that fight at the end only your man rescued you with the net,legendary stuff here.
@masterbaits1740
@masterbaits1740 Месяц назад
@@squaretops1 had the drag set loose prior and adjusted to match the fight of the fish as it went on, used a 10lb maxima leader and let it fight for long didn’t want to bully it in on a light leader for such powerful fish

nobody should be really targeting salmon in the irish and uk waters that are catch and release with such light tackle on purpose not that you did , clearly it wasn't planned ! , sure these are also fit springers but to new any new salmon anglers , especially nearer the back end of the season when there are slightly more stale fish , the idea is to get them in and released as quickly as possible so they have enough energy to spawn and possibly survive the kelt stage , this means a stout single hand rod like a 9 or 10 weight or a switch rod on small waters and spate burns if targeting salmon or even larger seatrout . better to loose a fish because you were hard balling it than have a fish die on release or not make it until spawing time , that being said i am not accusing master baits , just giving some info to any potential new anglers out there that may fancy the challenge of light tackle salmon fishing . landing the fish in the time you did was a feat , well done at that it went back strong

@@fradrake11 its a very american thing to try to land big fish on very light tackle, it is seen as "sport" and this is fine where high stocks of salmon like chum and coho, pinks and sockeye salmon run and mostly all die anyway . atlantic salmon in brit/irish waters are different in that they are fairly endangered but can often survive spawning and make it back to sea to spawn again , especially hen fish that leave the redd soon after shedding eggs leaving the cock fish to guard the redd until probable death . it is our duty in these waters to land and release our salmon as quickly as possible to give them the best chance of making it to spawning and perhaps beyond, every calorie stored in that fish is important to this process and if we want to preserve our stocks , as anglers we have to try and preserve the energy of the fish , after all they rarely take any food in rivers until after spawning has finished . the most sporting anglers from our islands do well to get em in and get em back as sharply as possible
@johnnyparkinson9431
@johnnyparkinson9431 4 месяца назад
Maybe in that case, we should allow spinning on all rivers, much easier to get them in quickly. And what does it matter, when they all go back anyway?

Had a 15 ilb salmon in a nice loch in scotland on a size 8 muddler 6ilb maxima green fishing for brownies , clear blue skies , flat calm , all the wrong conditions, what a mad experience , however a loch is one thing no currents and tows like a river , well done playing that to the bank , nice one.

The plus for you it's a Great Fish, the minus for the fish, did you have to show exactly where it was, hope the inland fishery officers have more staff as the place is heavily poached, and you've just added to the problem

Always some prick has to shun a man for fishing. The angling community is full of absolute 🔔 ends. Well done lad on landing that bar of silver. Enjoy every moment of it, I'm glad you shared your experience, even though the trolls pop out every chance they get. I've been into fish before and everything goes wrong, line tangles on the spool, spool came of the reel. All of it, it happens. All part of the game
