Looks like he got so much pain when hiting those high notes ! He sounds like he his out of power and all shaky... And he still manage to do it !!! RESPECT !
Maynard is & will be the greatest & most powerful player of all time. There is however many many fine players that have special attributes to there playing such as a fine tone, fine tongue skills etc.... but Maynard will always be a class by himself.(VLS)
What can you say. Maynard and his band were the best. He was the true essence of class and a real showman. Even as he got older he still gave 110% The thing that really set him apart from most other big bands was the exciting, creative, interesting arrangements. The same thing with Buddy Rich and his Band. He always had exciting, creative, interesting arrangements. And he absolutely gave 110%. When he was done playing he was soaking, dripping wet. The guy played his ass off.
...the man is clearly struggling...at this time in his life, who knows what had happened, hours, minutes or seconds before this was recorded. How he did what he did, for the decades he did it, still remains one the mysteries of the trumpet world....perhaps it always will.
Yeah he looks like he's really going through some discomfort to get those notes ... and that's the reality of the beast ... can't always be effortless and the fact he pushed on and went ahead makes him all the greater in my eyes
