Holy S#@&, I just had to call the fire dept to put out the last M.F. video I just watched. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing at The Santa Monica Pier and my youtube video of this song started up another fire in my computer. These guys are smokin. Everyone knows he was 70 when he recorded this, right? Most people you know who are that old are near-corpses or already dead. You have any idea at all what a toll fifty years of touring & playing like this cost? If he wasn't something divine incarnate, he was friggin' close. The only other musician as physical as this is Buddy. I'm not saying they were brilliant innovators or soloists, but they represent a time that's now gone: when rehearsed, focused, fierce will could drive a big band, raise the audience to stunned admiration -- night after night after night, set after set after set -- for the large part of a century. He's playing in a little club in the shady (north) side of the afterlife right now, & I hope I can sit in from time to time.
