It's strange: normally I prefer studio versions of songs or compositions. With this piece, I feel like the album version lacks the energy of the live versions I've heard of it.
Interesting comment. I have been reflecting too, and the trumpet sound on album seems not even like MF, none of his expressiveness. Just sounds like a studio trumpet player who can play fairly high. Problem with letting Maynard be Maynard was that he could have intonation issues like in this video presentation. You couldn't let the vinyl record come across like this! The people at the studio were probably beside themselves about this.
