Maynard played til the very end. A top musician and entertainer. His bands were great with the best players many just graduated from college. To bad we don’t have traveling big bands anymore. Most big and medium sized cities have local big bands that may invite a traveling musician for a night.
I'm 60, I was at NTSU with Drummer Ray Brinker when he got this gig, I was 23. Looking back, Maynard had so many great musicians in this band! Maynard was tops!!!
Until I came upon this video, I can't believe this...I had totally forgotten about Maynard Ferguson. OMG, I'm so old. Loved his music back in the day and listened to it a ton. What really sticks out in this upload is how gracious he is towards the guys in his band. To me, that speaks volumes about what an awesome dude Maynard was when he was still on the road. Thanks for th eupload, it brings back so many fond memories. Great band too, wow.
Ferguson's "Primal Scream" is one of my favorite albums. I got to see him in my modest little midwestern hometown in the 70s, but I didn't remember how gracious and complimentary he was with the members of the band. What a talent....
Primal Scream was a horrible album. That was during the "dark ages" of Columbia recordings. Look at the list of performers. It wasn't just Maynard's normal band. Columbia required during that time period that all of their top artists be featured on each other's albums. So primal scream among other albums during that time period we're full of nothing but studio musicians and other Columbia performers. Awful! I think perhaps all the major labels were doing that, such as RCA.
@@BillSmith-rx9rm Did you actually listen to the album? And what makes you think studio musicians aren't good? Steely Dan was nothing but studio musicians.
@@ksb2112 you are entirely missing the point. Of course I've listened to the album I've owned it since it first came out. I have an LP and a CD. I never said the studio musicians were not good. What I'm saying is, when you buy an album to hear a specific band, such as the Maynard Ferguson band, you're not wanting to just hear an overproduced conglomeration of various artists and studio musicians.
What a fun show! Not exactly 100%, but holy smokes! Based on MF’s comments, this is the second night of the tour, and seems like the second set of the night. Despite some misses, MF absolutely smashes the encore. Fantastic solos from everyone throughout. Thanks for sharing!
Mendhem or Morristown NJ, Lincoln Center outdoors but really during HS cutting my ear and bone chops playing with all the parts on MF 2 & 3 I could separate especially!
