Fun to watch this video. Craig Johnson, Keith Oshiro, Glenn Kostur, Nathan Berg, and Chris Brown were all in the One O'clock band my first semester at UNT.

Ah, the Prom Center! Also known as Prom Ballroom. Probably the biggest thrill of my late teens and early 20s: hearing MF at the Prom. A group of us also heard Buddy Rich and Woody Herman there. Plus I made a trip to hear Thad Jones/Mel Lewis there. Super atmosphere for soaking all this in. Remember how MF played warm-up notes in little room off to the side? Then he'd emerge from there, dramatically, as band started into Blue Birdland. The young people could get a little wild. I remember MF getting a little perturbed once, when he said "cool it." He was serious.
