omg....WHAT A WONDERFUL ENSEMBLE.,,,i met Chuck M....in person thru a mutual friend.,,,I love the pianist here, too..no idea who he is..he is excellent with his back up.
If I remember right, this was from an HBO Special called, "Sas and Brass," and I saw it when it aired in around '84 or '85. So glad to see this clip again. I'd forgotten that Dizzy was on here too. Thanks for posting!
I’m biased but if I was anybody but Al Hirt I wouldn’t want to solo after him. Al had a level of talent that no one else up there had at that stage in their careers if ever.
Nice to see a grouping of horns like that where for once it doesn't turn into a "who-can-play-the-highest" competition. There was some nice tasteful jazz here, whereas this sort of gig usually just ends up just being a mess of screaming. Perhaps they moderated the machismo out of respect for Sarah?
Swinging solo from Maynard; Don Cherry avoids the outside shit and sounds good. Al Hirt is great behind Sarah; and of course Herbie’s comping is fantastic.
