I put bearing in, and of course, I saw this after. I'm know they are new, but im considering changing them to a better quality like you show. I didn't have the grease you showed to use on the saft. and used a hi heat grease for wheel bearings. I'm concerned about that, too.

Eugene's advice and assistance, not to mention this video, just saved me over $2000. Big shout out. Quick summary - we have one of the original Maytag Neptune washers from 1995. It worked great until recently the bearings went. We were ready to buy new machines when we saw Lorain's other videos reviewing machines and we arranged for a consult with Eugene, thinking we were talking about new machines. When he heard what we had and what the problem was, he suggested that the machine we have is worth keeping if we can fix it. I ordered the parts kit from him and watched this video several times. I spent several hours pounding away to get those bearings out and then pounding in the new ones. And I mean really pounding. At one point, I thought it was not going to happen. During the process, I had a few questions which Eugene graciously answered. Once done, the washer seems to be working perfectly. A couple of pointers for those watching this video and who might be considering their own repair. First, I sprayed WD40 on the old bearings to try to get them free. I think it helped. Next, it was a bear to get the new bearings seated all the way, especially the back one. The front one can be drawn in by bolting on the pulley and tightening down as he suggests. On my machine, unlike this one, there is a spring retainer clip holding the rear bearing, so it has to get far enough in to replace that retainer in its slot. The challenge was getting the bearing perfectly square to the hole. If it tilted just a little on insertion, it wouldn't move. And even though I was hitting the old bearing over the new, it wouldn't budge. It was because it was very hard to hold the old bearing perfectly aligned with the new. Solution - installed the spacer and front bearing and seal and then inserted the drum so that the splined shaft came through the back. Then I placed the old bearing over she shaft, and by doing this, it was held in place to enable me to hit that against the new all around to seat the new bearing. To avoid hitting the splined shaft with my sledge, I used a cold chisel on the old bearing and moved around in a circular pattern to drive the new one it down into place. Another tip - the door wouldn't come out easily, but if you simply remove the four screws (two on the door hinges and two on the opposite side) you can close the door and then remove the front panel. Then it's easier to get the hinges and blanks out of the slots. And reattaching the bellows spring was not shown. I found another video on that. Trick was to use vice grips to hold the end of the spring and then I could pull it far enough. If I lived near Lorain, you bet I would be buying my appliances from them. Great advice for sure. thanks.

Received my kit this past Friday. Watched video over and over. My washer sounded like a jet turbine engine in the spin mood. The bearings were a beast to get out. Everything in ours was disgusting after 25 years of washing. Every part was taken apart to clean. I ran the washer several times and to check for leaks and make all is working well. I love my machine and so glad I found this video and parts to repair my washer hopefully for another 25 years. Thank you for posting this video and parts.

I fixed my washer thanks to you 🙏 I’m a 10 year carpenter who can fix anything and I still had a tough time with everything. I had no luck removing by drum with just a 2x4 and sledgehammer until I found a suggestion in the comments to put the bolt all the way back into the threads and smack the head with a sledgehammer. My bearings were so rusted, what helped me remove them was a 1” cold chisel and an 8 lb sledgehammer working all sides evenly. To install the bearings I wouldn’t suggest old bearing trick, I smashed the hell out of my finger. If I were to do it again I would just hit the bearing in as much as I could with a sledge and 2x4 protecting the bearing then go buy some unistrut washers and some long, medium, and short 3/8” bolts with a nut. Use those on both sides of the new bearings and tighten the bolt so it will compress the bearings into the shaft.

@@marclebrun1808 Thanks Marc. I waited way too long to do this project. The seals were failing causing the bearings to fail. So you can imagine how imbedded the shaft and bearing would be. Bearing grease spayed on the inside where the belt is. I was going to ask my mechanic if he has a handy tool to pull out the inside bearing. I assume it is ok take some of the parts outside and hose them down. They all caked with 21 years of detergent.

This video was really well done and helpful. I ordered the repair kit from you at Lorain Furniture from the link above, and am really satisfied. The kit arrived in 2 business days and it included the high quality SKF bearings, like you said in the video. I did the install about 10 days ago, and the machine is working great. One piece of advice (if I was doing it again) is, after you remove the metal inner tub, tape over the drain on the inside bottom of the plastic tub so no debris gets in there while you are working. I learned this the hard way when I was pounding on the old bearings I ended up with a piece of old broken ball bearing and a chunk of wood down in the rubber drain pipe and water pump. Had to remove and clean out both of those, which is ok, everything is all clean now and working fine. UPDATE: Two years after bearing replacement and lots of use and machine is still running like a champ.

This was pure gold and helped me a lot , thank you. Unable to source decent bearing where I live so ordered Chinese parts from Amazon. Pulled the seals off and pressed wheel bearing grease into both sides. I used an automotive bearing tool to pull the new bearings in nice and flush, worked great. The most difficult part of the process by far was reinstalling the bellows with the cable/spring - other than that my washing machine is now nice and quiet. Thanks again!

Great video! My MAH4000 is 20 yrs young, but the bearings were both failing and so I replaced them as per the video. Washer now works better than new so I am told. Three notes: The front bearing was good and stuck and needed a 12 lb sledge and an old cross tire iron...and about an hour. Then, you should check the clearance of the pully on the spindle before final assembly so that you can tell if the bearings are pressed into place after tightening. Finally, there is a retaining ring on the MAH4000 rear bearing that did not show up in the video. Thanks so much for your nice video...the control board and door switch failed and we replaced them six years ago...so now we are good for another 20 years...

March 2020. Great instructions. I grew up in Lorain, and was happy to see a solution from my hometown. I have a model MVWB850YW0. It's about 8 years old. Someone asked about the seal. The rubber seal gets mounted with the larger cavity pointing downward. I noticed that on the new seal I got, there's a small coiled spring on the inner lip. That's the side that points downward. I bought the bearing seating tool, and it was well worth the $130. I still saved about $300 by doing the repair myself. I didn't have any trouble getting the stainless steel drum/basket up off the shaft, so I didn't need a drum removal tool. One tip: I attached chains to the lid, to hold it up and out of the way. I didn't have a wall that was convenient.

I was selling appliances for Circuit City when these machines hit the market and they were something else. I’ve always thought that they were robustly built and washed incredibly well. It’s a shame that a few flaws led to such major ramifications for the company because I know a few people who still have them and since they’ve always cleaned them monthly and left their doors open for a few hours after use have never had a problem. There are aspects like the baffle design that I wish someone would copy today.

Great video. Bought the kit and attempted to proceed. I thought I could do this without much problem since I was a Maytag tag back in the 80’s. Well taking everything apart was easy till I got to the bearings. Beating on them for almost 2 hours over 2 days. Figured ok past the hard part now time to put bearing in. They wouldn’t go in to save my life. I greased them and made a piece of wood so I could hammer them back in but 2 hours later I got them in but I could never get them to go in Al the way. Now new bearings won’t come out and tomorrow a new washer is getting delivered. Hope others have better luck than me.

Another "Great" video Eugene... I Remember when these machines fist came out, I had to put a $50.00 deposit down on the deluxe model to be assured that I would get one of the first that come off the assembly line... The bad thing was after it was delivered and set up, the very first load flooded my laundry room out!!! The repairman came out and found that the boot wasn't put on correctly and once it reached a certain level, it kept draining out all over the floor!!! After a 10 minute fix the machine was up and running and "NEVER had a problem with it again... It was a great machine... Thanks for the video and have a "Great" weekend!!!

Easy to take apart and to identify source of leak. Quick trip to Auto parts store; $8.00 plastic epoxy to fill and seal inter plastic tub. It's been 4 weeks with plenty of use. So far so good. Very happy with the capacity and performance of this unit. Unit is new to me as ive never seen them before i purchased. Thanks for sharing ur experience with unit.

Perfect. Finally someone is intelligent enough to cover the details. I just wanted to know how far that shaft should be sticking out into the pulley. So it has to be flush. Shit I got another 3/8 inch to go. Well I am afraid to use the pulley to suck the shaft out. I am going to use a socket. I don't want to break the pulley. I have used the proper seal in the front matching the old one. But I have a feeling that my maybe front bearing may not be all the way in. Yea I have been having fun alright.

My wife and I had the same washing machine for over 14 years until the main bearing went to screaming like one of my children when I use to whip their ... . lol. So we decided to just call it worn out as one of the appliance guys told me it would cost near $800 for parts and labor. I now know he was full of sh.. . After watching you make this repair, it would have been a piece of cake for him or me to take on. I may have taken me a little longer than it did in this video but I am pretty good at fixing things. SO, we bought a new Maytag front loader two months ago. Since then we had had a local appliance repair company send their worker to my house 3 times to replace the springs, shock absorbers and computer trying to stop the damn thing from tearing itself apart. When it starts the spin cycle and toward the end of the spin cycle, it shakes so hard it walks over 3 inches until it hits the wall. The sales company has sent a video I took of the machine to Whirlpool and waiting on the next move by them. NO, my floor is solid. I wish now I had purchased the GE machine. According to a survey I watched, Maytag is not second to the bottom for repairs in the first year and GE is at the top as the best machine. Go figure. I want my Neptune back.

I really liked the tutorial. It's pretty clear and gives good tear down instructions and recommendations for putting the bearings back in. Mine was a little harder to tear apart because the shaft didn't want to slide past the large bearing due ti corrosion. My 3 tool suggestions are a bearing / seal driver if you have one for driving the bearings and the seal, a brake spring tool for putting the spring back on and a pair of work gloves when tightening the stuff up in back, the edges are sharp.

Ordered the kit from Lorain and tackled over New Years, so unfortunately there was no "calling a friend" for answers. Video was spot on, however our washer required the other front seal than was featured - but both variations come with the kit. Also requires that triangular plastic piece between front seal and bearing. Video shows O-ring replacement around shaft but I did not find one on our original - could've been obliterated over the years or maybe this model doesn't require it, who knows? I installed the new one regardless. Of extremely important note, the rear seal is held in place by a spring clip which is NOT pictured in the video. Failure to remove this clip could scuttle your repair. My spring clip pliers weren't large enough but I made do with 15" needle nose pliers. Overall the Lorain video was EXTREMELY helpful and, save for beating the heck out of that corroded front bearing for removal, was a pretty simple, straightforward process. If you're viewing this video to decide whether to tackle the job, support Lorain and purchase parts kit from them. Pricing is competitive and supports the company that enables you to do the job in the first place.

A couple of things that might help, put a 36" 2x4 at an angle across the front of the tub inside the front sheet metal front edges this will stop the tub from moving as much when you hit the shaft and instead of a wooden block screw the washer and bolt back into the end of the shaft until it is tight to the shaft and hit directly on the bolt head (and only on the bolt head) I could not get mine to move until I blocked the front tub and hit directly on to the bolt head in the back. Does not hurt to set washer at an anle and put penitrating oil on the shaft and let it sit for a couple of hours Used two pair of small vice grips to remove and install the spring holding the rubber. Check to see if there is snap ring on the back of the rear bearing, there is one on mine and unless that is removed you can beat on that back bearing forever and it won't come out. I have a MAYTAG NEPTUNE FRONT LOAD WASHER MODEL MAH5500BWW been running since 2001. Good luck on your project.

OK so I was able to finally get the drum out and the shaft I took my 3 pound sledge and a big chunk of wood and beat the crap out of The back shaft and finally the drum came out I took a lot of your techniques about reusing the bearings on top of The new burns but what I did on the new bearings as I put them in the freezer which helped a lot I also put a light coating of anti-seize around the outer race as I was setting the bearings in also you may want to tell people to make sure that the inner collar if it has a tapered shaft I believe that goes towards the back bearing. The little O-ring that goes against the shaft and the inner drum I lubricated it with some light silicone grease and what I did as I took the collar that goes over that little O-ring and placed it on the shaft obviously I cleaned everything quite well before I replaced anything, after that I took that little steel collar and put it on the shaft against the small little O-ring and tried to sit that with a screwdriver taken care not to bend it, after that I lubed it up with a Maytag grease Install the seal using some rubber compatible silicone around the outer race to help it sit and then I also used some special automotive silicone on the inner seal or the shaft meets against that collar in the drum. Instead of using your method of just tightening it down which is a good method I used a torque wrench and found the OEM foot pounds which is 33 foot pounds. Thanks for your video I appreciate it I think the hardest part was trying to get the drum and shaft separate from the old bearings!

I'm followed yesterday. I noticed ar 9:40, you take the metal piece and o-ring off, but, don't put the metal piece back on. the kit has a new metal piece. I just slid it over and it kinda snapped into place. I suppose that's all there is to it. Also, I don't see the Rear Bearing being installed. I suppose that goes in 1st, then the spacer, then the Front bearing? (update, did that) I used a jack handle. Put the old bearing over it, then the jack handle through the hole. Then, hammered the old bearing. Worked super. The rear one was HARD. The front was cake. Sadly, all key parts are FF through, such as the bearings, and how to get the new seal on, putting the front metal clips back on, and how to put the spring cable back on the front rubber things, which I’ve been trying for an hour to no avail. Would be super to watch in real time. Update: Day #2, still can't get the cable and Spring on. Had 2 people try. Finally thought it was on, then, on 1st run, it popped off, ended up inside the machine and it dumped it's water on the floor. *Update*. The trick is too remove the rubber gasket from the door, and install the cable that way

Thank you very very much for the instruction video and the parts. Parts are not for sale in canada. Why? I don't know. Did the job in 5 hours. Don't hear a thing anymore. And a happy wife.

Great video! I just get a “like new” set of the touchscreen model for $300, love old electronics, and always want it a set. Watched the video to give the washer a deep cleaning. I guess Maytag stop doing the front seal so people buy the new stuff

Excellent job, excellent video. I have the same, a machine given to me, tested with 1 empty load water only. Everything is fine but the bearing is noisey if you stand behind the unit. I do not know if the upper of 2 port weep holes is a spot where the bearing can be oiled? But.. worth a try, at some point, I will consider getting your rebuild kit you have assembled. The good news is the door bellows is in good shape and I cleaned and washed it with bleach, I need to wipe it dry yet. Thankyou for your fine,, very fine video.

Tip for getting ring off of spinner support: rent a slide hammer and front axel puller (fork style) from your automotive store. Let it sit overnight with a strong solvent/lubricant, then use the slide hammer. I've done this repair twice and both times that ring was a MAJOR problem.

Hi Eugene, Thanks for a great video. I've got a Neptune MAH4000AWW made in Oct of 99. I bought it from a lady who had four kids and a husband about 3 or so years ago. I took it apart to clean it up and clean out that nasty brush type thing they have at the bottom of the inner tub. That was DISGUSTING and I don't know why Maytag would ever put something like that in there. So it catches some lint, but it doesn't wash it away, so you're left with the gunky mess. Anyway, the only thing I've done with it is I just changed the belt as the machine was starting to slip a bit. Otherwise, the machine seems perfect. I don't notice anything unusual with the spin (bearings) but am wondering if I should just go a head and replace the bearings since they are still available. What are your thoughts? Thanks again for a great vid. I do wish you would have show how you got the spring back on around the boot. I remember I had a heck of a time getting mine back on.

Going to do the new installation of the bearings on the Maytag Neptune. But the soap dish on top is pretty gnarly and wondering if you sold that part as well. Thank you for the great video.

After doing this multiple times because of premature bearing failure, I've realized that hammering the bearing in just doesn't get them seated properly. You really need to rig up a press system with some big washers, bolts, and threaded rod. The washers need to be big enough to cover the outer race of the bearings. I believe the OD of the front bearing is 2.75" and the OD of the back bearing is 2.375". There used to be a tool available online but it was extremely expensive. The middle spacer should not be bouncing around freely and should be squeezed up against the inner race of the bearings.

Great step by step. I was in the store before Xmas from Michigan to get parts . Everything went well as noted in the video . Ran a test cycle and it was like brand new. Once we loaded it up in the last 5 minutes of the spin cycle there was a loud metal clanging . I re- tourqed to 44lbs thinking the bearing were not drawn in to the shaft collar. That really did not help . Any thoughts ? I was going to disassemble to see if the spacer collar is loose between the bearings . Any thoughts Would be appreciated

Please be advised that there is one step that is missed in this tutorial. On the back of the tub before you can beat the bearing out, you must remove a ring with a special plier's. Thankfully I had 1 in my toolbox..

If you check time mark 12:19 of the video, you can see that you left the metal sleeve in the tub seal that was supposed to be installed on the spinner support shaft with the O ring.

I needed to see how you put that bearing sleeve on the driveshaft. Does it get driven on or does it all squish together and seat on the o-ring? Otherwise great video.

Fantastic video. I'm at the part where I'm supposed to remove the spin shaft. I whacked it until my hands hurt. I used a rubber Mallett first and then I used a wood block and smacked until I broke the wood. Am I doing something wrong? The darn thing won't budge.

When you receive your repair kit make sure when you remove the bearings before you attempt to reinstall the new ones you measure the inside diameter of the bearings that you're replacing with the ones that came in the kit. In my case the rear bearing had a .5000 of an inch smaller inside diameter which made it totally impossible to push the shaft back through the bearing and complete the job. With all the aggravation and frustration ended up replacing the washing machine.,

@moderomanllc5621
@moderomanllc5621 3 года назад
Screw and tighten the bolt back on the spin shaft. Hit the bolt's head (only) as much as you can until the drum comes out or place a correct size of a socket head on the bolt and hammer the socket. The kit should come with a new bolt any way.

That's got to be the cleanest spider I've seen in any used front loader! I have the 5500 Neptune and though I love this machine, I also tend to wonder what it's "supposed" to sound like. Have the bearing gotten gradually louder over the years? I don't know. It bumps and bangs up to spin speed which makes me think it's due for new struts.., but maybe it's supposed to do that. Otherwise I love the machine! Do you think you could post a quick / short video of the washer in all of it's cycle sounds?

Hello Eugene, I thought it would be easy to pull out the basket, but I'been trying to do it with no success. Could you share any thoughts to do it? It seems the bearing at the rear is very stucked to the rotor. I would really appreciate it. Mine is the Neptune but the model with dryer/washer.

I was ready to tackle this job but the washer maybe too heavy to move out of the closet. Questions: How much water is left in the tub normally? When I manually spin the tub I can hear a lot in there. Can I get it out to lighten the machine? Also, how much will the weight lighten when I remove the door, front, and top? Any other ideas would be much appreciated. I have the parts ready to go. I've been putting this job off for at least a year and a half. LOL

I’ve tried adjusting everything but nothing working for me. Basically I’ve worked on the door longer than it took to replace bearings. Very frustrating. Any idea what I could try?
