Maytag Whirlpool Refrigerator Leaking Water into Freezer and Floor - Repair

We had noticed that there was water accumulating under our refrigerator. an inspection further showed that the bottom of the freezer was completely covered with ice, an increased fog was present inside both compartments, and mold was appearing on the seals.
As the unit is only a couple of years old, rather than needlessly spending thousands on a new one, all it really required was a little maintenance to bring it back into order.
Naturally, its good to prepare for this, emptying the freezer into coolers (or someone else's freezer) as I have chosen to inspect the rear panel and to an express defrost. We can see in the video the large mass of ice and water dripping from the back panel.
The refrigerator is powered down, it might be a good idea to unplug it too. The plastic tray comes out first, followed by the outer door with four mounting screws. The shelf has a process to remove which is explained in detail in the video for its removal.
With that removed, the ice breaking begins, followed by the removal of the two plastic molding pieces. The one on the left has a sensor attached.
All of the screws are then removed and then the panel is carefully taken out. We see everything is completely frozen over. We let this melt and go around back.
The back panel is removed to expose the funnel and pipe. This requires a few electrical connector and grommet connections. As I pull out the dirt and dust you can hear the calk mass fall into the tray.
We discovered though that it is frozen solid several inches, the boss decided that the hair dryer will be used to melt the channel. Turns out the drain was completely hidden. When it melted, everything drained all at once.
Back in the fridge, the veins are all straightened and the rear cover is put back on. The sensor requires special attention as the molding is reapplied. The shelves, draw and door is then reinstalled.
In the back it is discovered that the pan has a crack during cleaning and it is repaired with epoxy and tested. Everything else in back is cleaned including the fan.
The back cover is put on for monitoring and waiting to see if condensation collects in a towel below. Once it is shown to work the funnel is re-added and everything is re-assembled.
Runs as good as new with no leaks, no fog and no mold.

Thank you so much for your detailed video. Our Maytag model is quite a bit older, but your walk-through here helped us identify similar parts and clear up the clog and frozen drain overflow issue we suddenly started having. TRULY appreciate you sharing this; it was a real help in a time when we need our freezer to be functioning, and it's difficult to get and pay for a repairmen. You saved the day! Xo

For 5 years now I have been battling this freezer... every few WEEKS having to disassemble & thaw only to have water on the floor again a few weeks later. It was starting to ruin my cabinets, floors, and baseboards. I never knew about the rubber drain in the back until I saw this video and sure enough it was clogged with gunk. I was seriously about to drop $3k on a new fridge but now it's FIXED!! It's really FIXED!! Thanks so much!

I have the same refrigerator with the same drain/ice problem. Because of these videos I replaced the drain with a drain tube which has a bigger, more rounder tunnel for the water to flow. I bought it from Amazon called a (Drain tube kit) about $15. Now the wife is happy and so am I. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this video. Bought this fridge off Facebook marketplace. The fridge was clean when I got it. Brought it home and water started pooling on my floor.. this video was the fix. The hairdryer idea is brilliant. Also, pouring hot water - not quite boiling, worked really well for thawing the drain to the back.

Thank you so much! Thank you for your great video! This has been a big help! Thanks to your video this problem, that has persisted for well over a year, has been fixed!!! Not only was the molded catch tray completely iced over with about half an inch of ice, and down into the drain funnel, but the sheet metal shroud along the bottom was down into that tray, right to the floor of it. And since metal gets very cold, I'm sure the water would freeze before it could reach the drain hole. The ice was so thick, that at first I couldn't see the drain hole at all. No more towel rolled up in front of the fridge! Yay!!!! And to think I was going to buy a new fridge.

The same thing happened to me! I carefully melted the ice by pouring a little bit of hot water over one end of the ice, melted it enough to carefully get a plastic spatula underneath it and it popped up in one HUGE sheet! 😳. I thought that it was "fixed".....until it happened two more times. Only after watching this video did I even REALIZE that there was a drain hole underneath the thick layer of ice underneath the coils! I am soooo thankful for the gentleman (and his "boss") that took the time to make this extremely helpful video!!

This is by FAR the most helpful video that I have seen! The lighting you used gave clear, bright pictures so it was easy to find things on MY refrigerator. My husband just had surgery, so it was basically up to me to deal with it. Being kinda handy, I thought that I'd google "Remedy for Ice On Floor of Whirlpool Freezer" and your video came up! After watching it twice, I told my hubby, "I got this". He half-heartedly believed me, knowing full well that we'd be contacting a repairman by sundown. 😉. Turns out, I followed your video every step of the way and I DID IT and ALL BY MYSELF!!!!! 😄. Cleaning that bottom freezer is a lot of work for the many screws and items to remove. On top of that, it forces the person to bend down to see that little room way under for repair and cleaning. It's not convenient placement, it's better on top. You did a great job!
@cynthia1088
@cynthia1088 7 месяцев назад
It's not easy, I just put a large cookie pan at the bottom of my freezer and took a hammer to the ice, I can get my arm in enough to rake out most of the ice into the pan and used the hammer for a little more reach on both side of mine...they should make it easier to disassemble the drawers and stuff, but I never did take mine apart...mine would freeze up like this about every 1-2 months...so it definitely got old beating that ice out, we replaced the parts...now to see if it works

We were wanting to get new floors but my fridge leaks like the one in this video so we wanted to get it fixed before we get the new floors. I looked and sure enough the drain was frozen and dirt and dust was in that rubber nozzle. I made the repair and we can get new floors now. Wonderful video, Thanks! Do the same on my parents 46 year old Sears Coldspot fridge. That thing is built like a tank just like our Kenmore dryer from 1969- still running! Fridge needed a new defrost heater rod. Recommend while you have the unit open to oil the fan shafts in the freezer rear and in the back where they enter the bearings. Will keep them running for years and make the manufacturers frown 😀

Hey, thanks, youse two. I needed to make this fix on my fridge and it went pretty much like yours did. I used a blow-dryer to melt the ice around the drain on the inside, and then poured warm water through to melt the rest. Once that ice was melted, the water came flowing through like a river. I put a new drain tube in, but I didn't really need to, the previous one had a bunch of gunk in it that I was able to blow out and clear. I guess I have a spare now. Thanks for your help - this video helped a lot.

Nice comprehensive instructional video. I just finished the job and I enjoyed it! The most time consuming part of the job was melting the ice build up from the rear panel prior to removal, and more from the condensing coils and from the bottom of the freezer. Well, 9 months later I’m doing this job again but this time on the fridge at our vacation place. Luckily it’s 29 degrees and all the food is outside. Do any of you have the part number for the improved drain?

That should make it so you dont have to do this again. Original design is flawed. Once clogged and iced, no turning back. You have to defrost.

Did this on my MFI2269VEM and that did the trick. One addition: after I plugged mine back in, I had to wait 30+ minutes for the fridge to "boot up" properly again, and until then, it would show me the dreaded 888 888 error code if I pushed any button. Either the compressor or the board experienced a bunch of false starts, or that's somehow a normal boot sequence on that particular model, go figure. Either way, patience paid off, and all appears to work fine now.

Perfect video for me. Saw similar videos but none went to extra little details like lint removal from drain pipe. One question. You have used hair dryer to remove excess ice. Is it safe to do it.

They have a fix for this problem. it is not normal for this to happen. It is, in my opinion, a defect in design. The whirlpool people agree and they offer the fix. It replaces the rubber nipple and the funnel with a "U" style drain that creates a water block so warm air can not enter the freezer.
