The Mazda 787B is one of the greatest racecars of all time. The R26B rotary is the engine behind the Mazda 787B Le Mans car, one of the most iconic race cars ever. It became iconic because of the incredible livery, the underdog story, and the INCREDIBLE noise it made (and the flames from the exhaust). In its relatively short racing career, the 787B left an impression that will never be forgotten.

Wonderful video, very informative! It's a shame that they banned the rotary engine from competing, it was too good for it's own sake that Le Mans banned it...

Hopefully Mazda will solve the apex seal and air pollution problems, for a light hybrid engine with enough power to make the hybrid battery smaller and lighter.

1) there's already a solution called vajra, which is being tested in Australia. 2) what air pollution? The fact everyone still thinks CO2 is pollution is nuts.

@@SieTeppischfresser it's because rotary burn oil by default and that is the main reason for the air pollution..

@RH - Such haunting and glorious howls - the gods of internal combustion are pleased. Mazda put in the engineering and spent the resources; that rotary ban: totally unfair.

Rotary engines were never explicitly banned, though...it was only because of regulations being aligned to Formula One that they weren't really allowed. In fact, in 1995, rotaries were back at Le Mans with the Kudzu DG-3 built to WSC spec. Mazda can still enter in the LMDh class right now with a car equipped with a rotary engine if they had the money to do so.
