Here's a look under the hood and underneath the Mazda CX-9 crossover utility vehicle!
The Mazda CX-9 is the largest vehicle in Mazda's lineup and Mazda has chosen its most powerful engine yet, the 2.5L Turbo charged 4 cylinder Skyactiv engine. It's paired with a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
In this video we take a detailed look under the hood at the subsystems, such as the air intake, fuel, engine, timing, drive belt, cooling, transmission and electrical systems. We also take a look underneath the CX-9 at the exhaust, brakes, suspension, steering and fuel delivery system.

I am going to buy a new 2021 Cx-9 vehicle, and this review gave me a good idea about the suspension system maintenance. I now understand that the lower control arm is easy to replace but handling the upper control arm is a nightmare. Showing the rear axle that connects the rear differential is very useful, so this is a AWD for family purposes and not for a rough off-road drive. Also, the anti-roll bar with links that needs a frequent fix. I AM Not sure about the rust but I am living in a very warm and dry climate, if I move to a humid place close to the sea that would be problematic.

Yes but why should I have to rustproof a vehicle myself that I just paid 40k for?
@ljpr360
@ljpr360 3 года назад
@@halc.2899 Because companies don't care anymore and it's always something with every automaker, for example; it's better than taking it into the dealership every week for electrical issues (amongst other things) on a vehicle you paid $65K for. Lexus and Acura are still pretty reliable but almost every other "Luxury" or above average class vehicle has so many issues because of all the extra features. For me personally I would rather do a bit of coating than have mechanical issues or have to take it in every week especially for people like me who live hours away from dealerships.

Again, an excellent car review. I am very familiar with different Mazda vehicles. I think CX9 is a fun car to drive. Also, the reliability is quite good however the maintenance is pretty expensive, especially if you want to use OEM parts. I would not recommend CX9 to anyone who likes working on their own cars. And yet be aware of the rust issues.

Excellent reviews, I like how you show us the components of the car for when repairing and break down each aspect. Engine , transmission, and suspension. Instead of just shouting out don't buy this get a toyota instead like other people on youtube, without any indepth analysis. The eclipse cross looks like a winner to me so far mechanically, these mazda and Kia/ hyundai have weak gdi engines. The first thing to do with a mazda is install a catch can and get a rust proof coating done from underneath

Kevin Wright - Nice! I would hypothesize that Mazda’s problem is the chassis paint, not the body paint or the quality of steel used. If that’s the case, CRC corrosion inhibitor should be a great fix. I plan to apply that to my underbody components every couple of years.

exhaust gases are inert so they dont get reburnt as you say EGR works by provided some inert gases to combustion to act as absorbents of combustion heat to reduce peak in-cylinder temperatures, this reduced possibity of knocking and NO x produced since high in cylinder temperatures promote knocking and formation of NOx, another primary benefit of EGR is you can have larger throttle opening to compensate for diluting the air with exhaust gases this helps reduces pumping losses(how much effort the engine uses to suck and blow air).

Heck Yeah! I own a 2017 CX-9 sport. I love that thing, it drives perfectly with the exception of the transmission jerking for the first few shifts when not warm. It looks just like that one mechanically minus the AWD system. Gas Mileage is great, I get around 24 combined City and Highway which is crazy to think it gets 4 better MPG while also more HP & Torque than my old v6 mustang did while weighing over 1000 lbs more. However, I'm paranoid about rust now after seeing that but when I was under the car changing the trans fluid the other day I didn't notice any, must have gotten lucky as the car has only ever been kept in SoCal and CFL.

@AllanXRLTS3
@AllanXRLTS3 3 года назад
@Myname Isunavailable More or less a rough shift. I think it's a design flaw, the 'Tropher' did a video on driving a New CX-30 and commented on the transmission doing the same thing (90F and below). I think the cold temp throws the fluid viscosity off parameter and when the TQ converter locks up during the 1-2 shift it's harsh. I personally don't mind it since it goes away, I just don't know if it will get worse, or damage itself over time.
@georgepaniagua6115
@georgepaniagua6115 3 года назад
I have a 2016 GT CX9 with 32k miles on it. No AWD. I’ve noticed the same issues before going to work. It’s a simple fix. Let the engine warm up for 5 minutes. Issue gone. It never shows up the rest of the day. In my vehicle, the shifts are not “jerky” but I can feel them and that may be issue. After the car warms up, you hardly feel the shifts at all. I’m comparing the CX9 trans to a 2010 Ford Escape. Shifts were NOT smooth and actually got worse after getting off the highway, then it really “jerked “ the car. Even passengers could feel it. I would take the CX9 over it hands down.

There were a number of comments addressing the rust, with some surprise, on the under carriage of this Mazda CX-9. Unfortunately, all cars, at least those made with metal will rust/oxidize, here in Central New York. The reason isn't a surprise, we have long cold winters with over 130 inches of snow and spring and fall with a lot of rain. Of course, the large amount of road salt doesn't help either. So, no surprise, the cars here are exposed to lots of moisture and salt and never able to dry out. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the rust you see here isn't a Mazda issue, but a function of the conditions this Mazda was driven.

@@PecanPie1102 There are a variety of non-permanent undercoatings you can use, some off-the-shelf and some homemade. Something like Fluid Film works well. Others use bar-and-chain oil (summer formula preferred) as it's pretty sticky mixed with a solvent like kerosene to make it more sprayable. Some people just use used motor oil. Just don't use anything permanent like spray truck bed liner or Ziebart or whatnot...the permanent coatings actually trap water and accelerate rust!

There is lots of surface rust, but something to remember is that 99% of that is surface and not the actual steel itself rotting, on many stamp steel setups you'll see the entire frame orange in rust but still solid even after 10-20 years, I have a 2014 Mazda 3 and the stamp steel has surface rust but is still very solid, I live in northern Canada and the outside has zero rust, even around wheel well and side skirts, which I think is most important. Thanks, I have a CX-5 w/ the same turbo engine. Is it possible to change the plugs like I could on my wife's 2015 non-turbo 2.5 CX-5?

The engines are the same yours is just beefed up a little more for the added turbo. Her spark plugs should be in the exact same area yours is.

Rust proofing?... Can you elaborate or give a good google search phrase? Just bought a new CX-5 in salt county and would like to drive this car for the next 20 years. So far the best I can find is an oil treatment plan for biannual application. Thanks

According to project farm, CRC rust inhibitor is much better than oil. Same stuff manufacturers use inside panels.

The surface rust isn't great to see, but I have a 10 yr old CX-5 that has gone through MN winters and all their salt and it's still solid, but yes does have rust underneath, but not a lot worse than that CX-9.

Why don't you ever state the model year of the cars you review? That would be very helpful for viewers. Still appreciate all the technical info you provide vs number of cupholders!

I dont think that rust would be an issue, just like the rust on brake rotors.
@slapskate
@slapskate 6 месяцев назад
Those non-coated rotors they sell are so annoying. They start rusting as soon as you bolt them on & while I get that it's just surface rust who wants a rusty brand new rotor! 🥴

Obviously cost cutting measures with the poor quality steel components underneath the Cx9. Let's see if the Cx90 fixes this issue. Seems to be a great vehicle and would be a great vehicle for a family if taking care of.
