Mazda3 USB Hub removal (AA/CarPlay retrofit)

There are lots of good videos on how to install Mazda's USB Hub retrofit module to enable AA/CarPlay, but none covered models with manual climate controls.
We did find one video where a guy said he drilled the tabs out with a 3/8" bit. A commenter on that video said he tried the same and "saw sparks" while drilling, which gave us pause.
Another video shows a kid taking apart his entire center stack shifter knobs and all. That looked... tedious.
So, we came up with what turned out to be a very simple procedure. I hope it helps someone!

Thank you! With your method, it took me less than 2 minutes to remove the old one!

Wanted to leave a comment for anyone else looking to do this, I just attempted the same and had a hard time finding the same tool, but ended up using two old screws, putting them about 1/4in into the holes you used for the hooks, and pulled with my had to pop the front plate off! So happy I didn't rip my whole car apart for this, appreciate you showing us how to do it easier.

Did you have to break the clips. I am trying to Install it in my M3 Sedan, for the cabling do you have to open the side wall. Thank you

@@akarsaca probably too late, but I did not end up breaking anything. I used a couple of small screwdrivers to compress the tabs on the top and the bottom and the box came out intact. I did not need to pry it from the sides.

I thought I was going nuts! Very odd that none of the install videos have manual HVAC controls. Gonna give this a try!

Just wanted to say thanks a ton for posting this video! I was able to swap out the USB hub and install CarPlay in my 2018 Mazda 3 using this method. Saved a ton of time and effort by not having to take apart my whole center console!

I am also trying to Install it in my Mazda 3, I was wondering if you had to open the side wall for the cabling and how much time did it take overall. Thank you

@@akarsacaI removed the glove box, the trim/vents that were removed in this video, and the infotainment system. Once I removed the existing USB hub, I was able to route the new wires all the way through with only those parts removed. The whole process took about 30-45 minutes.

This was really helpful, I also found that if you are lucky, you can just pull on the rubber part of the sd card holder and you dont even need the picks. Afterwards I just propped up the tabs with a couple screwdrivers and out it came!

Thank you! I used two allen/hex wrenches and two paris of plyers to pull the cover, as you showed. Then I was able to access the clips and break them off for easy removal. Briliant move! I was otherwise looking at trying to remove all the trim around the console. I plan to post your vide in a couple of forums to pay it forward.

Thank you! This works on my 2015. I used an old curly hook tool that was something my dad used to replace car windows ages and ages ago. I didn't count to three though. I also have that YETI cup and it's awesome.

Great video. But I thought of a way that might be even better. I screwed in two 3" galvanized drywall screws into those holes. Just a bit, maybe 1/4", so that they were firmly attached. Then I took two pliers and grabbed the screws and pulled. Popped right off. 🙂

Awesome! I also own a '16 with manual climate control. (hope it doesn't happen to you but temperature dial control arm inside ended up poping out like many. If you google/youtube stuck in cold or heat or something like that you'll see a lot of related video. It is easy to reconnect by accessing from glove compartment but those cheap soft plastic arm over time become loose and now mine always pops out when going from hot to cold at around 11'clock position). mazda does have a re-designed plastic arm thing but beyond my basic skills to change it, also i haven't seen any long term follow up from drivers using the new parts anywhere too. I just wanted to let you know of this possible issue. Sorry, now back to the topic. I personally did the drill method myself it was easier than I thought, at least for me. I didn't really think of the danger of as I didn't know what the inside of the USB hub looked like. What I did was using the new part as a template, I did best to figure out exact where abouts I should drill and how deep I should drill to make a contact with the base of the locking clip. by taping the drill bit. All 4 clips broke off cleanly for me but I did have to use a plier like yourself to really pull the hub out which I didn't care much for as it'll get replaced. Now after seeing your video, I can definitely recommend doing it your way as it seem way safer and you need less tools like drill, etc... I think you should update your description to add more tags to help others discover your video better. Good job on your video!

You have to connect the hub to the LCD, so...
