I partially agree, but I do think you highlight some key points here. I agree that *in theory* an MBA would have a higher ROI, but realistically I don't think it moves the needle much. I think that we have more data on MBA returns than we do an MS in Management, frankly because a Management degree catalog can vary depending on the school. i do agree that every time you see 'Management', they essentially mean HR / Organizational Behavior. But realistically speaking, I highly doubt that in a job interview a hiring manager will view an MBA superior than an MS in Management. An HM would simply care that the candidate has a master's degree from a respected institution. Also, there's a high chance that both the MBA and the MSM are offered through the same school of business. This would mean that in both instances you have access to the same resources (professors, career centers, etc)

Richard, I want to thank you. I’ve been in insurance claims for over a decade. I went ahead and completed my MBA and received a mid 6 figure salary based on your advice… and I’m only 30! Keep changing the world!

@@RichardWalls What about the difference between MSBA (masters in business analytics) vs MBA with BA specialization?

UIUC is now allowing you to complete the MSM and then rolling all 36 credits into the MBA. Thoughts on this? For context, I'm a 23 year old with 1 year of work experience, so it would allow me to essentially waive that 3 years of experience requirement. Thanks!!

For starters, I wouldn't recommend pursuing an MBA with just 1 year of work experience. Especially an online program. This kind of MBA is really meant to complement someone's resume that already has at least 3 years of experience (preferably 5+). If for some reason you're set on wanting to do the MBA now.. If by completing the MSM, you're guaranteed admission to the MBA program (in addition to rolling the credits into it), I'd say that's worth considering in your situation. But if it's not guaranteed admission, I'd skip it. Get the experience first.

@@RichardWalls Got it, I plan to complete the MSM + MBA over a 4 year window so I would pretty much have that 3+ year experience as I go through the program. Let me know if you have any other thoughts on this. Thanks for the advice!!

It's a better option to start with MSM before MBA at UIUC so you can get both degree for the price of one. I did start with MBA so I didn't get the MSM even though I've completed 80h credit + 4 capstones instead the 72h + 2 capstones required.

@@MsSalim20001 That's what I was thinking, but in the real world I don't think it matters too much, the MBA is what checks the box (maybe I'm wrong). The main reason I'd be doing the MSM is to essentially start the MBA without needing 3 years of experience, by the time I finish the MSM, I'd have 3 years and then I can complete the MBA with half of the units already done. Does that make sense Salim? Any tips/thoughts would be appreciated man! :)

@@unitedpvp1372 I've seen a girl in the MBA program with only 1 year of experience but the majority have +5 years. I think it's a good idea anyway to start with the MSM and then get the MBA

I was a little surprised by your firm "no" on the value of both - especially given your Gies background and they allow for stacking the certs and MSM on the way to the MBA. If someone is pursuing both by different means, I agree it is definitely not worth it. However, if you are in one, single and stackable program (like Gies), I think it could make sense - especially if you need to batch your education for employer reimbursement reasons

I dont think a MS in M is gonna have much value for Business degree holders. its like doing your undergrad again with extra steps.

I'm halfway through the UIUC MBA program and have had the same thoughts about this qualification given that so much of the material was covered in my business undergrad. I think the ones getting the most benefit from this program are the students whose undergrad was in something completely unrelated to business.
