He’s been on the job for only eight months, but MBTA General Manager Phil Eng thinks the troubled transit system has finally turned the corner. Appearing on Boston Public Radio and taking questions from the audience, Eng said progress is being made despite continuing negative press about problems he inherited.
“People do need to hear when we have challenges,” he said, “but people also need to hear that we are making progress. And we really are.”
Eng cited repairs to the Blue Line, which allowed for more frequent trains, ahead of the summer-long closing of the Sumner Tunnel. He also said recent work on the Red Line’s Ashmont Branch and along the Green Line in downtown Boston means more than two dozen longstanding slow zones could be eliminated. And there is a plan to lift speed restrictions systemwide by the end of 2024.

Eng is way more competent than our previous managers. It's going to take time to get the T back to where it needs to be, but he has some proven results aready with slow zone removals so I am keen to keep supporting him as he progresses.

He didn’t answer the cell phone question from the first caller 10:00 . What are the drivers supposed to do with no phone all day? Outdated, stupid rule.

The hosts hustled the caller's time to ask a question, so they could leisurely ask their personal questions and exchange jokes. I get that you want to make it casual, but this was the first open forum Q&A to the public. More time should have been given to the people calling in. They have real concerns that have yet to be discussed, let alone answered. Disappointing

I appreciate transportation in Boston more so than other cities. Its easier to get around because bus routes and trains run more frequently. For ppl who are productive transportation is a major tool for growth and survival. Glad to see all walks of life using the transportation system. Multiple perspectives incorporated to serve everyone's interest. I hope the drivers get support as their job is extremely stressful. I mean Boston driving you know 🫣
