Hi from a German viewer 😁 While it's true that 850sqi is the bare minimum in Germany, the recommended size is more around 1500sqi (1m2), with a pan depth of 11-12", we also have healthcare insurance for small animals, which I think is amazing, but even here there are a lot of people who don't care about the guidelines and don't get caught. I just hope that one day all pets get the care they need and I'm so thankful for wonderful people like Munchie, who not only educate others, but also rescue animals in need 😊
Im from Finland. Here the smalest cages that they sell, me guessing, is like around 450. And I see alot of big wooden wheels and really big and deep glass cages. Also here there is actually really good rabbit care. I was very happy when I went to the pet store since I just moved from Puerto Rico where Pet smart is the petstore
I'm from the UK and I can absolutely say we don't have good pet care laws! Some bigger cages are available but most people don't know that a hamster needs a big enclosure, so the market ends up looking much like the US market. Looking as German amazon it looks like it's a lot better over there though. And no, 620 sq inches is not enforced here in the slightest. Our biggest pet store, Pets at Home (much like Petsmart or Petco), has a cage for sale on their website called a circus cage, which is about 250 sq inches and they RECOMMEND putting !!2!! dwarfs in it!!! Or alternatively 1 Syrian, which is still too small. I haven't had a hamster for many years, but I know when I did, my enclosure was wayyy too small, as that was what was advertised at the pet shop.
Omg thank you for saying this im from the UK aswell I went into pets at home a bit ago to get my mice some treats and chews and I saw how ridiculously small most of the cages were and even worse the animals they recommended to put in there its so sad
My Syrian hamster actually died before I even thought to do any research I had him 2 months and I got the recommended cage at pets at home but now my hamsters are all in large cages there’s only 3 cages on their website which I believe are big enough and they sell 23 cages.
I bought a cage from pets at home that I use as a travel/bonding cage for my mice. It is sold as a cage for animals to live in full time, mice, hamsters, even gerbils. It’s 200 square inches... Luckily, I think, they’ve discontinued it and now sell only the slightly larger versions which are both too small as well.
Yeah I'm from the UK too. Bigger cages are available here but you have to look for them, very much like in the US. Most of the cages in pet stores are tiny. Pets at home do sell a cage that is around 525 Square inches which they sell as a "extra large syrian hamster cage" which would be okay for dwarfs i guess. But for the most part people just get their info from the stores and end up putting them in things not much bigger than shoebox.
Devoted rat mama here to put in my two cents that this cage would make a great holding cage for rats. I use something similar for when I'm cleaning their cage to keep them out of the way and I'm thinking about upgrading my holding cage to a Preview 528 since I now have six rats instead of just three. I also want those tubes, I know my girls would love them and I have no idea where to get tubes like that in a big enough size. However, this is in no way big enough for an everyday cage for rats, especially since rats are social and cannot be housed alone. However I really do like it as a travel or holding cage. The escape issues brought up could still be an issue for very young or small rats, and I would worry about their toes getting pinched in the parts that seem to want to move around, though.
@@rattiedaddi7375 Most breeders I've seen use a rack system for pairings and births, but they keep the babies in smaller cages until they're old enough to be socialized with the group so it could be good for that except I'd still be worried about escape because baby rats are very mischievous and curious.
I feel like it could make an "okay" cage for 2 rats but bigger is always better. It actually reminds me of my first cage, it's above the minimum for 2 rats but not by much, it's made of middling quality materials, not awful but not great and the doors require a bit of jury rigging to prevent escapes. It's the kind of cage that you buy when you're first starting out and don't know as much as you should. I'd buy it for the tubes alone, then I'd use it as a travel cage or Frankenstein it to my current cage (I have a Prevue Hendrix Fiesty Ferret Cage with a couple of homemade extensions). Sorry for rambling, I just enjoy debating the merits of different products with other rat owners :)
Yah their is always debates on what is good and bad and know one is perfect and we all make mistakes but I agree bigger then better it’s ok ramble all you want I geek out over rat talk 🤓
Hi Munchie, I'm from Germany and i rescue hamsters and mice! I've heard you say the german hamster minimum is 860 sqin a few times now and i want to inform you that thats not correct. The "official" minimum by the TVT and BMEL is 775 sqin. Most hamster rescues require adopters to have 775 sqin for dwarf hybrids and 930 sqin for syrians and robos. I've never heard of 860 sqin being used as a minimum anywhere in germany, may i ask where you got that number from? I also wanna say something about the whole "people easily get in trouble for neglecting their pets" thing... sadly that is mostly just true for cats and dogs. While we do have some laws and regulations for rodent care, they are not being enforced when it comes to pets such as hamsters or mice. The only reason someone would actually get in trouble over bad hamster care is if they are literally killing their pets or are an animal hoarder in which case our "official" minimum could come into play. Then it could be used as proof of neglect in court. But it is only a guideline and not an actual law meaning we sadly cant call the cops on anyone using a crittertrail haha. Basically we are just lucky to have an amazing hamster community in germany, everything outside of that is sadly not that much better than the rodent care in other countries.
OMG i have almost the same exact cage as shown in this video! The difference is: its slightly bigger, reaching 453 sq inch instead but still pretty much the minimum (it was the largest cage we could find locally). The bars are also white instead of black. I do, however, want to upgrade to a bigger cage regardless. And yes, for the record, the clips are DREADFUL. I tried cleaning the cage several times, the clips legitimately broke in half while I was trying to unhook them. The cage only has 2 clips on the front and back of the far end of either side, which is what made me look for a new cage in the first place. Luckily dwarf hamsters don't seem as strong as syrians, so she can't lift up the bars, but its not very secure and worries me.
Hello from Germany :D It is true, that our bare minimum for gerbils and hamsters is around 0.5 m^2 of unbroken floor space. Although many well educated hamster and gerbil owners will have even lager cages. Especially for (two) gerbils the minimum lies around 0.75 m^2 with a bedding depth of 30-40 cm. And: bar cages have a pretty bad reputation, because there are some hamsters, which will climb the bars and most owners will find it too dangerous (and the bedding height is a problem as well). Something I never really understood, is why pet shops advertise the right bare minimum, but never seem to have decent cages in stock. So all of my cages so far have been from online shops. Another thing: German cages seem to have a very natural look, thats mainly because paper bedding isnt that easy to purchase in Germany (and we tend to have high quality wood based bedding). Again something that may sound a bit extra is, that its not recommended to use wooden hidey houses with bark (because most of the time its made out of pine or cedar) and to not use something with nails or staple needles in it. And we typically dont use plastic at all in our cages. There are lots of hamster rescues out there, most of them dont only have a regulation on the cage size or the size of the wheel, but also check the diameter of all entrances to houses (typically its 5 cm for dwarf hamsters and 7 cm for gerbils and syrians) or the size of the sand bath as well. Seed mixes are also normally purchased online and dont contain any extras. Even though the standards are pretty high, not everyone sticks to it. There still are way to small cages, syrians living together, home breeding...and the list goes on. I hope that someday all hamsters and gerbils can live species-appropriate. Have a great day :D (and sorry for some mistakes)
Hello Neteni! I am from Spain and I have 3 gerbils, and it was very hard for me to find a cage that I would consider adequate for them. I currently own the Skyline Falco 80, which is very well built and designed, except that it only has one big door at the top, but with 3 adult gerbils I start to think it might be a bit small. Do you know what is the bare minimum for 3 gerbils in Germany? I would like to upgrade their cage, but it is very difficult to find reliable information on gerbils :( Thank you! :)
@@marinavengohecheadelgado1773 Hello :D I never had a group of three gerbils before, but this is what I found after a bit of research: the "official" bare minimum for a group of three gerbils is 0.6 m^2 (basically 0.5 m^2 for two gerbils, plus additional 20% more floorspace for another one), but the recommended minimum for a group of three is around 0.9 m^2 (for example 150x60 cm). Many people (myself included) use a tank with a custom made tank topper, or a modified terrarium on top of a tank (just to give you some ideas). This could be one example (its in German, but I hope the picture can illustrate what I wanted to say): image.jimcdn.com/app/cms/image/transf/dimension=710x10000:format=jpg/path/s098007901c094493/image/iba79a74eb35182eb/version/1478913343/image.jpg Hope you have a great day and I wish you the best for your gerbils. ^^
@@neteni1001 Hi Neteni! Many thanks for all the information and the link, it's really helpful ☺️ one last question, if you don't mind: the recommended floorspace of 0.9m2 can be divided on 2 floors or does it have to be continuous, like for hamsters? It will be very difficult for me to place an enclosure of 0.9m2 in my flat, as it is rather small. Thank youuu!!! ☺️
@@marinavengohecheadelgado1773 Hello ^^ I think they mean unbroken floorspace. But (in my opinion) a division isnt that dramatic if each compartment is big enough (So I dont think it would be a problem to connect two 0.5m^2 cages together). You just really need to be careful that no gerbil decides to claim a seperate enclosure as their territory. Groups of three tend to get into fighting more often, than a pair of gerbils. Its really important not to give them too much of a division inside their cage and to give them two entrances (at least!) for basically everything. May I ask the age and gender of your gerbils? Female groups tend to be a bit more unstable than males (especially in their puberty). I hope this was helpful ^^ have a great rest of your day.
@@neteni1001 Hi! If it's undivided floorspace, the enclosure must be very large. I don't think that I have the space at home for such a big enclosure, as I live in a small flat. That's why I was wondering if the top floor counts as floorspace or not. I have 3 male gerbils that are 1 year old and enjoy burrowing and also love the top floor (they even sleep upstairs in the spring/summer). I usually fill the bottom of the cage to the brim with homemade shredded kitchen paper bedding (about 35-40cm) and many tubes, chew toys, cork and hides; and a 27cm diameter wheel hanging from the top. I'm trying to provide the best quality of life that I can, and that's why I'm asking so many questions. Many thanks for your time, it helps a lot ☺️
I’m so happy that you’re going to be posting 5 days a week! 💕 Your channel is sooo awesome! 🥰 Happy New Year everyone! 🎆🎊🌟I hope you all are having a wonderful start to the new year!!! 🥳
Hey! I own this cage for my Syrian, Moley. I recommended using levels from a different cage (as they work better) and putting both clips on the shorter sides. This stops it bending in and makes it more secure! I also put little padlocks on the doors themselves to stop her escaping. I love your reviews, thank you for sharing (from the UK) ❤
Munchies you are supposed to use 1 clip on each shortside in the middle and the same on the long sides 🙂, to keep everything from moving. Its normal for the cages here to only have 2 clips here, 1 on each shortside 🙂
Hi I'm from Germany and have 2 Gerbils :) Before we had a 100x40cm Glas Cage, but we expanded and now we have a 120x70cm large cage.I'm happy to see your Videos where you educate people, about this cute lovely animals and their enclosure

@@marinavengohecheadelgado1773 Hi :) In Germany the cage size per animal must be at least 100x50x50 cm (length x width x height), for each additional adult animal 20% of the floor area must be added. Litter depth of at least 20 cm.The big cage I mentioned above is also a Skyline Falco, just bigger.I also like that Cage it's really well made.

I just ordered 2 of these cages for my rat maternity cages. I have a bin cage, but they're so much work to make, I opted for this. It was also $40 cheaper than the Prevue cage, which I actually initially had in my cart but they only 3 had left and by the time I was ready to check out, there was only one left. I didn't want 2 different cages so I got 2 of these... ANYWAYS... I feel like this video was a little biased, expecting it to be a cheaper prevue, and it kinda is, but you also gotta accept it for what IT is as a cage. It has it's flaws and I appreciate you pointing them out because now I know what to expect when mine come so I can set it up well for my rattos. The tubes I plan on putting in my DCN with my adult rats and I ordered some smaller things for when I have babies. Overall, I really appreciate getting to see someone use this cage since the photos they have listed make it look small, but it is the slightly bigger than the 110qt cages I've been using, it might even work out as a topper for those types of bins with some modification. lol
Greetings from Germany :D I currently own a syrian called "Theo" :) I really like watching your videos especially you setting up different cages we don't have here in Europe.
i was wondering if youd ever make a small series/long video like a cage tour for the rescue? mainly to give ideas different ways to set up the cage etc. plus i think u station everything very well
I live in the UK and I am hamster owner myself, my hamster lives in a 754 sq inches bin cage. Our main chain pet shop is pets at home and the biggest available cage is 350 sq inches (at my nearest store any way) lysm munchies! Stay safe.
Hello! I love this series so much and thank you for spreading good information about hamsters! I know your all about hamsters but if you could please review the kaytee open living habitat for rabbits/guinea pigs, that would be great! Cause I have little bunny and my mom won’t let me free roam her so when I saw the cages connecting on the commercial I thought that they might be actually be pretty good! But I still would like to see someone experienced review this cage
Hi Munchie! Love your videos! I don't have any hamsters but I have a guinea pig! Hamster cages should definitely be bigger then what they are right now. Edit: I got a kt cage ad on this video... Wow RU-vid, wow.
I totally agree! Make sure if you have one gp, you get another! Gps must be in pairs or groups. And with the ad thing, typically sites will look for similar things to what is being discussed. It doesn’t matter if it’s positive or negative. Key words here might be “hamster cage” which would probably pull up kaytee easily since it’s one of the bigger brands
@@Abby-um5rd my guinea pig was a rescue from someone who could no longer care for him. I don't want to buy a guinea pig and there are no small animal rescues in my area, so im waiting for someone to have a piggy they can't care for. Also I don't have a hamster but I don't think they should be in tiny cages.
Greetings from a German fan! It's true that there are better regulations here, but especially when it comes to small pets, there's not always someone to enforce them. We have the information and guidelines, but there are always people who just don't care. However, in pet groups and rescues they usually are very strict about minimum sizes. Some of my rat boys are rescued from horrible conditions, to the point that some had chronic illness because the damage was already done. Three are babys from rats rescued from an animal hoarder. This was a case where all of the animals were taken away and that person was forbidden to have animals again. I thought about making an ad review from the German version of Craigslist, eBay Kleinanzeigen, because I have seen some shocking ads there.
I just got the niteangel bigger world mdf a few months ago and I absolutely adore it. It was so easy to put together and I'm using the medium size (775 square inches) and I love it. In the future I wish I could get one taller, a bit wider, and with wheels. I absolutely reccomend it
@Munchie Hello munchie I love your videos they help me learn that those stupid tiny tales and criter trail are too small my Campbell hamster 🐹 nibbles lived in it we updated her cage to a 90 quart bin cage and she is loving it hope you see this 😃❤️
For this cage I would put dog leash clips or a similar thing on the sides of the doors to keep it from being able to shift side to side, and possibly a clip on the top of the door just in case to keep that latch system secure as well, just a safety measure to keep the doors secure and safer.
Did y’all see the new Kaytee cage? It’s for guinea pigs and rabbits, and it’s a HUGE step in the right direction! The guinea pig one is basically an improved version of the Midwest cage, 8 sq ft. The rabbit one is ok, 12.5 sq ft (rabbits should really not have a cage at all, and roam around and use a litter box like indoor cats) but again compared to their other “rabbit” products it’s a lot better! I’m the little intro video to it they actually promote and encourage having multiple guinea pigs, and also giving both the guinea pigs and rabbits free roam time! Thank you Kaytee for finally listening!
German viewer here, my tank fits the minimum requirement but it was still difficult to find a breeder who'd sell me a hamster because most require at least 930 sqinch for Syrians. There are still a lot of unsuited hamster items in our pet stores but at least there are barely any plastic items sold. It's just hard to get your hands on a good plastic wheel, the only one sold in stores is the Trixie wheel that's pretty loud. I'd buy mine a wooden wheel but she pees in her wheel and i have to clean it every few days
Reminds me of when I was assembling the mamble 100 for the first time, with the stand. I huffed and it lay on the floor for a few days. The bars fight struggle is real.
I'm getting a bin cage on the 4th and I'm a huge fan and i might adopt a hamster from your rescue in a few years. And I would love for you to review my cage on the 5th and what ever you say won't hurt my feelings also I won't have all the stuff for it when I post the video but I'm getting a bigger wheel and big hides and more accessories for the cage. I'm your biggest fan and you are the reason why I made my pet channel. And it makes me mad that people tell me to watch victoria rachel because you don't get enough credit and you are way more helpful than victoria rachel.
I have the prevue 528 and my Syrian girl has a horrible habit of bar chewing. She’s 6-8 months old and I notice it’s worse when she’s in heat. If she sees me and I don’t let her out she will immediately start chewing. I can’t get a new enclosure right now so sadly a glass tank is not an option. I’m not sure if it’s a habit she still has from the pet store she came from or what. I hate when she bar chews because I feel like she’s not happy. Although deep down I think it’s a mix of habit, age and hormones. I’ve given her a multitude of chews, and she has a large wheel that she rarely uses. I don’t know where to go from here
Can you link the Good cage? 😅 I have a Rescue for all species ( It's in the works ) and I would love to get a few of them. And I just started watching your Channel.and I love it already!
Hi. I'm new to your channel. We happened upon a little hamster days before Christmas. The Prevue cage you mentioned, do you recommend it for dwarf hamsters? We know our hamster is not a Serrian, but not sure what kind of dwarf he is. We also know he is not a chinese species (I cannot remember the full name). Thanks.
While the prevue is large enough for Dwarfs, i don't like using it for them due to the height on it. Try the Savic Haven or Mickey XL instead if you're looking at wire enclosures. Or 1010qt Sterilite DIY bin cages. I highly love those bins for Dwarfs. Tanks are another good option, 30/40 gal breeder tanks.
Hmm, I am viewing from Germany and the pet shops here only have tiny little cages in their stores. Very very tiny, I could get the measurements on them if you want. At least the stores I have been to. And I had to order a very large cage from amazon instead.
I’m thinking this might work well as a quarantine/temp housing for future foster rats. I’m giving my one cage to a girl who got bamboozled by a company misrepresenting bar spacing. I think it could also work as a hospital cage 🤔
.... as someone who used to own 6 piggies that is in no way a good cage for piggies. THEY GET HUGE. Piggies need huge spaces especially to run. That can be a good cage for a mouse maybe.
Nice review off hand I had hopes for the cage but it went along it seemed to get worse my main issue was the door and if a hamster is climbing besides the space that can open up it is very loud. I have rats and that is way to small event for guinea pig or chinchilla unfortunately many people would think this is ok for a guinea pig. Hopefully things will improve. Very odd in other countries the minum is so high but in American it’s not 🤔
In that cage is good but I would go more like for the 528 preview cage because I love that cage a lot the reason I love it so much is because I have male Syrian hamsters and I feel like they would benefit from the 528 preview cage
I hate how people advertise these cages for guinea pigs. I have 3 pigs in a 2 by 4 c&c cage with a large loft and I still feel guilty for not giving them more space.
@@LaurensAdventures1 I bet she LOVES all that space. I do feel bad sometimes because I know I have the minimum space for 3 when not including the loft. Heck I rescued all three of them....one of which was born in a bird cage with poop as bedding😭😭
@@brayleehimmler9405 that is awesome that you rescued them. Right know they could still be living in a bird cage or a small cage from the store. They have a great life with you!!!
Omg I have that cage I also love the cage and the openings are better than most I have ever seen. My hamster always stays stuck inside the cage (they like to escape)
Also i know you have been gone for a while but I’d really appreciate it if u could do videos on all the rescues you never talked about bc I love those videos and a lot if others do too:) And it’s hard to scroll through Instagram to see all of the rescues
Not all Europe sadly has good laws about animal care. Here in Poland animals can be breed in small habitats with not good food or substrate. I am personally a leopard gecko owner, but every animal here can be abused without law enforcement .
From what fans have said, not everywhere in the UK or places like Germany are the same and due to my lack of understanding about these laws due to not living there and not speaking the language, I can only rely on resources my fans present or say. While the US doesn't truly have good laws for pets, every state is governed differently for pets so I can see where some places may not be as a great as others.
Hey quick question can u keep 2 dwarf hamsters together? I didn’t think you could but my local pet shop said u can so I thought this would be the place to ask.
No you were right, dwarf hamsters are solitary. They might get along when they are young or in a too small cage but they'll end up fighting sooner or later. Sadly pet stores often spread a lot of wrong info...
I really want to get a wire cage for my mouse so its easier to hang hammocks and stuff up and not rely on stupid suction cups, and i was interested in this until i realised how easy it would be for him to escape :(
I wish they'd make even bigger versions of these cages. I just really want a giant ass cage with at least 1,000 sq inches of floor space for my future mice. But they only make that big for bunnies and guinea pigs and it's usually not exactly big enough for them. If they did that big for mice and hamsters I'd buy the sh*t out of it, especially if it came with stuff like an 8 inch wheel. But I live in America so I'd probably have to shop foreign unless I just make my own. *sigh*
@@cookieclimax463 it's called the Borneo XL I believe, it's between €85-€100 depending on where it's sold but it's incredibly hard to get. There's other 1000sq inch cages too but those are all around €200, although they're more widely available

I have a Dove Campbells named Nova(a very curious girl) in a 608 sq. in. custom enclosure with 7 inches of bedding(Kaytee clean & cozy), a 6.5 inch silent spinner(and no her back does not curve one bit), Higgins sunburst is what I feed her, also a sand pit that is suspended with a multichambered hide along with 4 buried hides and 3 hanging chews as well as 3 other chews. How anyone can mistreat these animals is beyond me.
Hi! I know you said her back doesn't bend in that wheel, but i'd still really recommend getting a bigger one for her. Sometimes with dwarfs its difficult to see if their back is straight enough because they are so round, but they still have to lift their head a bit while running. A bigger wheel would definitely be better for her in the long run!
@Regina's Rodents i had gotten nova from a neighbor who bought her from pet smart and got bored with her after only having her for a month so i had to get a 6.5 because it was the biggest the pet shop had. they had her in a critter trail with a broken wheel that they had from their last hamster. i am going to order a new wheel tomorrow after work. i for the past 6 years have only owned serians and one robo, so i really appreciate the info. thank you.

I’m actually finally getting a new hamster in a week and a half. I’m super excited. She’s adorable. Ooh exciting, i hope you two will have a great time together! Id really recommend getting the right cage and setup before you pick her up though, it will be way less stressful for her that way and she can properly enjoy her new home right away! It will also be less stressful for you that way, having a bored or stressed hamster at home is no fun (speaking from experience as the owner of a female syrian lol)

Just so you know, ferrets do not benefit from vertical space at all. Also, that cage is incredibly small for ferrets, who ideally should be free-roaming. They are more similar to cats than they are to small animals like rodents. Not trying to be negative, just preventing misinformation!
