I don't think we will ever again, have anyone like Ronnie Drew. He was a one off. His songs are badly needed these days. This is the earliest film that I have seen of him. His voice had such a hard texture, in the 60's, and early 70's.

Ronnie and I had a bit in common, due to our background in flamenco guitar. When Ronnie graduated from college he went to Spain to teach English, and while there he studied flamenco guitar. For many years he used his flamenco blanca guitar to perform and record. He was a good friend and I miss him and the other boys.

Bob Lynch was also a fantastic guitar player, both flamenco and classical,I took lessons from him about 1973/4 at a guess.

The anthem of theNavvies who built Britain and a good part of the U.S.A. It reminds me of my still loved and missed "Gramps" who after 20 years of graft for Wimpey, was rewarded by a fall from a cheapest tender, piss poor job of a Scaffold which gave way and crippled him,He died 18 mths later and it took a further 3 years before my Nan saw a penny from good old George. My gramps never expected anything but his wage, and a glass or two after work, and never bitched about his fate once! R.I.P. Gramps!

I looked up a picture of him with no hair or beard and i'm not a shamed to say i cried. When i think of Ireland it's his voice that comes into my head.Him singing Donegal Danny brings back memories of men we also have lost at sea here in Norway.

I always thought Thin Lizzy got the idea for their dual guitar sound from steely Dan’s Reelin in the years, but now I know they got it from much closer to home - John Sheahan and Ciaran Bourke’s mesmerising dual tin whistle sound!

Ronnie could also sing in Spanish and did so in a unique and wonderful way, and recorded at least one song in Spanish from Chile that I know of, and that was "Yo Vendo Unos Ojos Negros". My joke for many years has been if you are in an Irish Pub, and there is a Spaniard next to you who speaks English with a Dublin accent, then you know that he was a student of Ronnies! :)

As a American with Irish roots this music just makes me wish I could leave it all behind and return home. If you want to experience the influence of the amazing Irish melodies just listen to some southern bluegrass. It hurts me so the strife the Irish have had to overcome. God bless em! I know I do.

I've worked with the Irish all over the world, great crack, great stamina, some of them are really clever, steel fixing, shuttering, concreting, no problem, seen many of them turn up on Saturday morning shift, straight from the night club in a suit and shirt, sound familiar? Also had my breakfast cooked on a shovel, no joke.

I was looking at Yahoo Answers Tonight and the topic came up about Ronnie Drew being Dead.I was looking at Reeling in the Years on RTE the Other Day set in 1965 and the Dubliners was Singing Seven Drunken Nights and on another Day it was Mc Alpines Fusiliers. I was thinking of buying their CD in Tesco.s Tonight as their Songs are Handy for Practicing on my Accordian. I am very Sorry to Hear the News of Ronnies Death. My Extreme Condolences to His Family.

More than likely they were already the Dubliners and not the "Ronnie Drew Group" by this point. This is a rare lineup of the group where Luke Kelly briefly left to study folk songs with Ewan MacColl and John Sheehan and Bobby Lynch joined. Lynch stayed a year and Sheehan never left.
